Get Help Paying A Gas Bill In Chicago







Chicago has brutally cold winters, and with the rising costs of gas, some individuals are finding it more difficult to pay increasing heating bills. There are many low-income families and people who survive on a fixed income, and these individuals may need assistance in paying these high costs. There are resources available for residents in the Chicago area to provide the assistance that some people desperately need.








Instructions


1. Apply for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding through the CEDA program. This is the most common program known to Chicago residents. CEDA is the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County. LIHEAP funding comes from the Federal Government, and is allocated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to each state as a block grant. According to CEDA, throughout September and October, applications will be accepted for homes with senior citizens and disabled residents. Beginning October 1st, applications will be accepted for homes that are currently disconnected due to lack of payment. All other households meeting the eligibility guidelines can apply on and after November 1st. Most applications are processed within 30 days.


2. Apply for the Share the Warmth Program. This program, for customers who use People’s Energy as a gas provider, is administered through the Salvation Army, and provides households experiencing difficulties paying their heating bills with up to $200 in assistance if they qualify.


3. Apply for the Nicor Gas Sharing Program if you are a Nicor Customer and are ineligible for other heating assistance programs. This program, also administered through the Salvation Army, is provided as a one-time grant and is funded by contributions from Nicor Gas' customers and employees. You must fall between certain income guidelines to qualify for this program. During the 2007-2008 winter season, the grant increased from from $300 to anywhere between $400-$450 per qualifying customer.


4. Seek assistance through the People’s Energy Corporation if your gas services have been disconnected. Through their Good Samaritan program, low-income customers to get their heat reconnected by paying 20 percent of their past-due amount, or $250, whichever amount is less. To qualify for this program, a utility customer must have an annual income that does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty line.


5. Enroll in the Residential Energy Assistance Challenge (REACH) program. This 6-12 month program helps low income LIHEAP clients who are in crisis with their utility payments. REACH provides financial education, energy conservation assistance and case management, to help customers maintain a regular cycle of bill payment.

Write An Easy Essay Paper

Many people think that writing an essay is a complex task that only experienced writers and good students can do. However, it is not hard to produce a quality essay if you follow an organized outline. This does not limit your creativity. It allows you to express your ideas clearly and logically, and those are the distinguishing characteristics of a good paper.

Write a Basic Essay


1. Decide on a topic and a writing style for the essay. Informational essays are good when you're first learning to write, because so many resources are available for research. Other common styles are persuasive, argumentative and demonstrative essays. Topics should be specific. For example, if you write about cats, narrow the topic to "How Cats Hunt Their Prey" or "Personalities of Cats".


2. Organize your paper. An essay consists of three main parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction is typically a short paragraph with a thesis (topic) sentence that tells the reader what the following paragraphs will explain. In a basic essay, the body will usually be three paragraphs. Each paragraph should describe or explain one main point about the topic. The conclusion is a short paragraph that summarizes the topic. It is similar to the thesis, but does not restate it.


3. After you have written the essay, read it over. First, read for clarification. Do your sentences relate directly to the topic and support it? Do ideas flow in a logical order, or are they random and out of context? Get someone else to read your paper. If he doesn't understand something, ask why. Then make revisions if needed. Next, check your essay for grammatical errors. Do all sentences express a complete thought and have proper punctuation? Are there any run-ons or fragments? Do not rely solely on the spelling and grammar check in most software programs to alert you to mistakes. Check for these errors yourself.


4. If you are handwriting your essay, write a final draft that includes the corrections and changes made in the previous step. If you are typing your paper, edit and revise as you go. However, check the final copy, as well. It is easy to overlook last-minute mistakes.

What Is Fafsa Drn

Federal forms use numbers as identification tools.


In the United States, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the starting point for receiving student financial aid. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students need to "use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as the Pell Grant, student loans, and college work-study." Submitting this five-page document online triggers the immediate assignment of a data release number.


DRN Definition


The data release number (DRN) is a four-digit number assigned to the application by the U.S. Department of Education when the FAFSA has been submitted. The DRN is automatically designated by a computer when the financial aid application is submitted online or when encoded by personnel when the form is received by the Department of Education.


Purpose


The DRN is used to get help from customer service representatives and make changes to the original information given in the FAFSA. Using the DRN, students can change their e-mail address, mailing address, and phone number. Additionally, the DRN is used to change or add to the list of prospective schools where data is to be sent.


DRN Location


The DRN appears below the confirmation number on the confirmation page of the electronically submitted FAFSA. Federal submission instructions also state: "It is printed on the lower left-hand corner of the paper Student Aid Report (SAR) and in the upper right-hand corner on the electronic SAR."


Usage


There are two basic ways to use the DRN to change information or release information to schools. Any school not listed on your original FAFSA can request your data if you give them your DRN. The school will be given an electronic copy of your SAR information. After you receive your copy of the SAR, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) and provide your DRN to request a change to your SAR. These changes can only be to your basic information such as address, phone number, or school code.








Warning








Do not confuse the DRN and the FAFSA PIN. Both are 4-digit numbers, but the PIN, used along with your name, Social Security number, and date of birth is used to establish your identity on the FAFSA website. Students are warned to never divulge the PIN to anyone because it is a password to personal FAFSA financial information. The DRN can be shared with schools because it is used to change school codes and other nonfinancial information.

Whether you seek a spot on a professional cheerleading team, a cheer coaching job or an administrative position for a cheerleading camp, team or association, it's important to create a resume that focuses specifically on your related experience. A cheerleading resume should highlight your experience in cheerleading, coaching, volunteering or working at cheerleading competitions, as well as any athletic, dance, team, teaching or other relevant activities. Your cheerleading resume should not exceed one page unless you have extensive experience. 2. Type your complete contact information, including a professional email address, at the top of your resume. Do not use a font larger than 14-point for your name. Though confidence is essential in cheerleading, convey confidence through your words and layout rather than through font size or colors.


3. Write a brief objective statement beneath your contact information. If you seek to direct a youth cheerleading camp, for example, state that clearly in your objective. A recruiter or hiring manager should be able to tell exactly what you want. If your objective is vague, like "I seek to return to the world of cheerleading," skip the statement altogether.


4. List relevant experience in reverse chronological order. If you seek to coach cheerleading, include all your teaching, coaching and leadership experience inside and outside of cheerleading, as well as your personal experiences in cheer, dance, performance and competition. For each item, concisely describe your role and the duration of your participation.








5. List schools, cheer camps and cheer workshops you have attended. If you did not participate in cheerleading in high school or college, simply list the school's name, city and state or country. If you were on a dance or cheer team, list the team and your years of participation under the school's information.


6. List other work experience or extracurricular activities if the previous sections are brief and you have not yet filled a page. Cite unrelated experience to demonstrate you are well-rounded and have other skill sets that may be applicable to cheerleading.

Avoid Procrastination Before A Final Exam

Procrastination is the Achilles heel of every struggling college student. It can make you pull an all-nighter to write a paper that was assigned four weeks earlier. Procrastination before final exams is the most practiced and yet most destructive of all.


Instructions








1. Know what is expected of you. This begins the very first day of class. Each professor hands out a syllabus that outlines everything that you need to know about the class. It includes a schedule, which will contain the date of the final exam. The syllabus also has a goals section in which the professor gives you a general idea of what you will need to know for finals.








2. Take notes. This doesn't mean simply writing down everything that comes out of the professor's mouth. Jot down items that are of importance. Especially take notes on items that the professor specifically says will be on the exam.


3. Review the notes daily. Take some time every day to go over your class notes outside of your homework time--even if it is only ten or fifteen minutes. This will help to familiarize you with the material and reduce the need for cramming before the test.


4. Do your homework. This includes reading the book.


5. Ask questions in class. Make sure that you are comfortable with all of the information. If there is a question, ask the professor either in class or outside of it. You may also influence the final in the process, by giving feedback or exposing a point of confusion for everyone. The professor will either explain better or revamp the test.


6. Make every test during the semester a practice test. Professors give at least one test every semester. Use it as a practice run. Focus on the incorrectly answered questions. They are your weak points, so study them to strengthen your knowledge on the subject.

Grad Schools For Creative Writing

There are multiple areas of study in a Creative Writing degree.


There are dozens of graduate schools that offer masters degrees in creative writing. Its diverse students can designate a specific genre such as fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, but multiple areas are recommended. University of Utah


In 2010, the University of Utah, located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain range in Salt Lake City, was named one of the top five Ph.D. programs in the country for Creative Writing and Literature by "The Atlantic Monthly." Its guest writer series draws top poets and authors and is offered to over 30,000 students. Courses across genres are required of all graduate students and provide expert knowledge and insights from the diverse faculty. Applications for 12-15 graduate students are accepted each year and they comprise the editorial staff of Quarterly West and are required to work on the Western Humanities Review. The two-year program requires genre-specific courses, workshops, studies in theory and practice equaling 27 credit hours, and six hours of thesis research. Special research and outreach projects include community writing and family literacy projects. Fellowships and teaching assistants are awarded based on varying factors such as merit, gender and genre. Tuition averages $4,500 per semester in 2011.


Colorado State University


Located in Fort Collins at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado State University's enrollment is about 26,500. In 2010, the beautiful city was named the sixth best place to live by "Money Magazine." A well-written action scene is suspenseful and taut. It pulls the reader into the action and makes him see, feel and taste everything that is happening. An effective action scene pulls together all the elements of good writing. It should have the flow and pace of a good action movie, using words instead of visual images to get the point across. There are many things a writer can do to create an action scene in fiction that will keep readers on the edges of their seats.








Instructions


1. Map out the scene. Determine all the particulars in the scene before writing it. Who will be in the scene? What will happen? Why does it happen? What type of action will it involve? Will it be a shootout, a car chase or something else?


2. Set up the scene before it happens. For instance, if there is a showdown between the protagonist and the antagonist at the end of the story, create tension between the characters that will lead to the action. Write the plot in such a way that the showdown becomes inevitable and suspenseful.


3. Don't cheat the readers. Create an action sequence based on what the readers already know about the characters. If the characters are superhuman, then show them using their skills during the sequence.


4. Put the action sequence in a setting that will make it more suspenseful, such as the edge of a cliff or in a crowded theater. Describe the setting or foreshadow it earlier in the story so that readers will already be familiar with it when the action scene begins.








5. Start the action slowly. Build up the tension before the action begins. This will make the scene more suspenseful. The scene can build with narrative description or it can involve the protagonist's interior dialogue. Once the tension reaches a level where something must happen, then begin the action.


6. Choose language and sentence structures carefully. Elevated language or complex sentences will slow down the action and make it sluggish, while direct language and short sentences will make the action lively. On the other hand, long sentences can slow down parts of the action effectively in the same way slow motion is used in the movies. It all depends on what is needed for the scene to make it effective.


7. Show, don't tell. For instance, during a car chase, use words to describe sights and sounds, such as screeching tire wheels or the roaring engines. Show how the characters react physically to the action. Make the character feel his heartbeat quicken or wipe sweat from his eyes. Don't say that the character is frightened or is hurt when he gets an punch to the jaw. Make the readers feel it.

However, citing APA online journal articles involves adhering to a set of guidelines by the APA, MLA and other associations commonly referred to when writing college papers and other documents.

References and Works Cited Lists


1. Gather the pertinent information on the APA online journal article you need to cite. Write down the journal article authors, the title of the article and publishing journal, the date the article was published and the date you retrieved the online journal. You'll also need the name of the database or organization from which you retrieved the APA online journal.








2. Open a word processing software application such as Microsoft Word to help you format the citation for the APA online journal. A hanging, right-indentation of about a half-inch should be set for all lines following the first. This indentation is standard in both APA and MLA citation formats.


3. Start the online journal article by first writing the names of the authors. In both MLA and APA-citation formats, author names should be inverted (author's last name first followed by first and middle names or initials). A citation of an online journal article with two or more authors should start with the first listed author of the article. An example of an APA-style citation is "Doe, J.W." and MLA-style is "Doe, John Wilkes." Note the use of initials with APA style and full names with MLA citation style.


4. Continue writing the second part of the citation by following APA or MLA-specific guidelines. For APA style, write the year of publication enclosed in parenthesis followed by a period; an example would be (2002). The second part of MLA-citation styles says to write the title of the journal article in quotations, being sure to capitalize the major words of the title; place a period at the end of the article title before the ending quotation mark.








5. Write the article title next if using APA guidelines or the journal title if using MLA guidelines. For an APA online journal article being cited in APA style, capitalize only the first word of the article along with proper names following the title with a period. Here is an example of an title cited in APA style: "Talking to pet companions helps depression patients in the United States." If using MLA citation styles for this part, italicize the publishing journal, following it with a period.


6. Continue the next major part of the citation by writing the publishing journal in italics if using APA-citation style, followed by volume/issue and page information. The journal title and volume/issue information are written in italics and are followed by commas; page references end with a period. For MLA citations, this part of the reference includes the volume/issue information formatted with periods followed by the year of publication in parentheses and pagination information if available. If no page references can be found for the online journal article, the reference "n.pag." is used to denote that.


7. Write the final part of the online journal article citation. This information is the date of access and retrieval information and is common to both APA and MLA-citation styles in particular situations. For MLA-style, the date of access is appended at the end of the citation; URL information is not required. For APA-style citations of online journal articles, URL information is not required if the article also appears in print publication; in this case the reference "[Electronic Version]" gets placed after the article title. In APA-citations, DOI (digital object identifier) references are required when available; the DOI appends to the end of the citation like this: "doi:0123456/789012345."

What Colleges Accept Transfer Credits

With the cost of a college education continually rising, many students choose to enroll at community colleges (also called junior colleges) for two years either to earn an associate degree or to take courses that fulfill general academic requirements. Once completed, these courses often qualify as transfer credits at four-year universities so that a transfer student may begin taking major courses upon enrollment at the four-year school.


General Rules


The better question to ask is "which courses are accepted for transfer credit at most colleges?" As a general rule, courses taken at community colleges that are accepted by four-year institutions are those that are not remedial in nature, not taken toward the fulfillment of a terminal technical certificate or degree and for which the student receives a high letter grade (at least a C or better). Enrolling in a nationally accredited community college as opposed to one with only regional accreditation will improve your chances of your courses being accepted for transfer credit.








English Course Credits








English is one of the two subjects that many community college students are often disappointed to find that the four-year college of their choice requires them to retake. Many colleges will not accept transfer credits for English courses that only prepare students for college writing; colleges generally only accept college-level English composition courses for credit. English as a second language courses or basic writing courses often will not transfer.


Math Course Credits


Math is another subject which causes frustration for transfer students. Most colleges will only accept math courses for transfer credit that consist of college-level algebra or higher. Elementary or intermediate algebra courses are often not accepted for transfer credit.


Plan Ahead


To make sure that your community college course credits transfer to the four-year college of your choice, find out what courses that four-year college accepts for transfer credit. Contact an admissions counselor at the college of your choice as well as a junior college and find out exactly what is required and what junior college courses fulfill the four-year requirements. Take those courses, study hard enough to make at least a C, an you'll avoid unpleasant surprises.

Gmat Sentence Correction Tips







The GMAT will test your ability to improve incorrect sentences.


The Graduate Management Admission Test is used for entry into many Master of Business Administration programs. In addition to reading comprehension questions, issue and argument essays, critical reading questions and problem-solving exercises, the GMAT includes a verbal section containing sentence correction tasks. These exercises measure your ability to recognize and correct improper uses of grammar and stylistic errors.








Test Structure


For each sentence correction task, you will be presented with a sentence that has an underlined portion.This section may contain elements (often two or more) that need to be changed, or it may be correct. Choices of substitutions for the underlined words follow the sentence. Choice A is always identical to the underlined portion of the sentence; if the sentence appears to be correct as it stands, choose answer A. If the underlined portion contains errors, choose an answer that corrects all of those errors without introducing new ones. Since the GMAT is timed, work as quickly as possible.


Parallel Construction


When you analyze a sentence, look out for parallel construction errors. Parallel construction uses the same pattern of words to indicate that two or more ideas are equally important. To prepare, you might want to read Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech, which contains many examples of parallel construction. When King says, "We will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together," he is using parallel construction by employing the infinitive for all of his verbs.


Idioms


Compare the use of prepositions such as "to," "at," "in," "with" or "for" in the underlined portion and the answer choices. If they differ, it's possible that an idiomatic expression is being used. Brush up on the correct use of idiomatic expressions like "agree on" and "in the likelihood that" by studying a list of idiomatic expressions.


Word Usage


Some words in the English language have a strong similarity to other words and are easily confused. The GMAT may test your knowledge of when to use one word over another similar, but incorrect, word. One example is the use of the words "lay" or "lie." A child may lie to a teacher, or he may be lying in bed. A hen lays eggs, while the girl laid the plates on the dinner table. Other words that are easily confused are "affect" and "effect," "healthy" and "healthful," and "uninterested" and "disinterested."


Pronouns


Pronouns like "he," "she," and "they" replace nouns and must agree in number and person. Words like "everybody" and "everyone" are singular, so a sentence should read, "Everybody should do his best," not "Everybody should do their best." If a sentence starts out in the first person by using "I," it should not switch to the second person ("you") or the third person ("she").


Using pronouns in an ambiguous manner can lead to unintended humor. Consider the sentence, "Children can be harmed by prescription drugs, so it is best to keep them locked away." The noun described by the pronoun "they" is not clear. It is therefore not apparent whom or what should be locked away--the drugs or the children.

According to the Freelance Writing website, only two schools offer a full online MFA degree in creative writing; other online programs require at least a minimal amount of time on campus. That being said, however, there are some very good online MFA degrees in creative writing that have what they call "limited residency" requirement. In other words, you can do much of your coursework online and only have to go to the physical campus for a few classes. Many of the classes at the campus are presented as an extended workshop so you do concentrated work in a relatively short amount of time.


National University


National University offers an MFA in creative writing with no residency requirements. Students take one month-long course at a time and create a publishable piece of work as the final project. Focus areas include fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry and screenwriting. "This program is excellent preparation for a professional career in writing, working in the areas of publishing or filmmaking, and is the minimal academic qualification appropriate for those who desire to teach writing at the college or university level," according to the school's website.


University of Texas at El Paso


The University of Texas at El Paso is the other fully online creative writing MFA program. Students in this program also create a publishable piece of work as the final project. UTEP is unique because its MFA in creative writing is a bilingual program. In addition to preparing students to be successful in the publishing market, the program also turns out graduates who are prepared to teach creative writing in bilingual educational systems.








Wilkes University


The MFA in creative writing at Wilkes University can be achieved in just one year with a minimal residency requirement of two eight-day workshops. In this program, students have to choose one of two paths: publishing or teaching. Students also choose an area of concentration in creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, screenwriting or playwriting.


Vermont College of Fine Arts


The Vermont College of Fine Arts offers MFA degrees in creative writing and writing for children and young adults. The low-residency creative writing program was established in 1981. Students are only required to be resident for two 10-day periods per year. The program has tracks in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Students have to complete five residencies and four six-month semesters to meet graduation requirements.
