What Is The Minimum Credit Hours Needed To Get A Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant Program offers financial assistance to eligible low-income students.

The Pell Grant Program is a Federal Program that provides financial assistance to low-income college students in order make post-secondary education more accessible. Only students that meet the eligibility requirements can receive Pell Grant funds.

Enrollment

The student must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at least half-time. Half-time is considered six credit hours per semester or 12 credit hours per year. Full-time is considered 12 credit hours a semester or 24 credit hours per year. Students enrolled half-time may only receive half of the total awarded Pell Grant amount.

Degrees

Students that hold a Bachelor's degree or higher are not eligible for Pell Grant funds. Even a degree from a non-accredited program will make a student ineligible. Students must be working toward their first bachelor's degree. Holding an associate-level degree or equivalent does not affect eligibility.

Eligible Family Contribution

A student's Eligible Family Contribution (EFC) is determined by completing the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be completed by the student annually and determines how much a student's family can afford to contribute to the cost of college. As of 2010-2011, the maximum Pell Grant award is $5,500 per year.

Over the past several decades, private colleges and universities have increased their prices dramatically.

If you are planning to attend a private college or university, chances are you will need to take out a loan or two to help pay for you tuition, room and board and other expenses. Fortunately, by filling out a FAFSA form for federal aid, you can receive better school loans than if you would get through a bank.

Direct Subsidized Loans

One type of loan you can get approved for by filling out a FAFSA form is a Direct Subsidized Loan. Direct Subsidized Loans do not accumulate interest while you are attending school or during any grace or deferment periods when you are paying back your loans. Another advantage of the subsidized loan is that you will receive a lower interest rate by using the FAFSA form to receive the loan. (See Resources.)

Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Another loan you can receive from filling out your FAFSA form is a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Direct Unsubsidized Loans accumulate interest as soon as you receive the loan money and while you are attending school. Though the accrued interest is a downside to using an unsubsidized loan, you will also get a lower interest rate getting an unsubsidized loan using a FAFSA form.

Direct Plus Loans

The third type of loan you can receive from filling out a FAFSA form is a Direct PLUS Loan. Direct PLUS loans are for parents to use to help their children pay for college. Using a Direct PLUS loan will take some of the financial burden off of the student, and using the FAFSA form will also lower your interest rate.

Subsidized Low-Interest Loans

If filling out a FAFSA does not qualify you for financial aid loans, then you should turn to your bank or another financial institution to help fund your college education. When searching for other loans, select a loan that is subsidized -- so you are accruing interest while your student is in school -- and that is also low-interest, to lower your overall investment. Most FAFSA-approved student loans can receive interest rates between 2 and 7 percent, so you should aim for a loan that is within that interest range or only one or two percentage points higher.

Many games exist online that can help entertain students as they learn about this complex yet fascinating system.

For those looking for some practice on remembering where all the bones are, Softschools (softschools.com) provides an interactive game that asks users to place the name of a particular bone to the appropriate place on a skeleton. Users drag the name with their mouse to a different part of the skeleton, then click to place it on the line provided. If the answer is correct, a cute character comes out to let the player know he got it right. However, if he is wrong, the same character comes out with a "Try again" sign, accompanied by a buzzer. There is no time limit, so players do not have to feel rushed.

NeoK12 -- Skeletal System

NeoK12 (neok12.com) provides a site with various games that can be used for students at different grade levels. For example, there is a quiz that asks seventh- through 12th-graders to answer questions regarding bones. The user clicks on a yellow card (which contains the questions) followed by a blue card (which contains the answers.) The quiz is timed, and every correct answer is worth a point. Once all of the questions are answered, a picture is revealed with a tidbit of information regarding bones. If your score is not quite up to par, there are videos that can help you brush up on certain information. An added bonus for teachers: the quizzes can be printed as a worksheet.

Kidport: The Human Skeleton

Kidport (kidport.com) offers a simple game for sixth-graders who wish to review the bones of the body. A skeleton is featured off to the right of the screen, and students are asked to click on the corresponding bone. For example, the word "cranium" may appear in blue off to the left, and students must then click on the correct part of the skeleton to identify the cranium. The next question will not appear until the correct bone is chosen, which will be indicated when the word "correct" appears on screen. This activity is also untimed, so students can work at their own pace.

ABCya! : Learn the Skeletal System

ABCya! (abcya.com) provides another labeling activity, in which the user must drag the names of certain bones to a corresponding box on a skeletal diagram. The difference between this one and the Softschools game is that students can count how many clicks it takes for them to correctly label the skeleton. This offers an interesting challenge and an alternative to games with timers.

Emotionally Prepare Kids For The Spelling Bee

Giving advice to kids beforehand is part of the process of preparing them for a spelling bee.

Spelling bees can be an exciting time for children, but that excitement can be accompanied by fear, anxiety and other emotions that might not enhance the experience. Anyone trying to emotionally prepare kids for a spelling bee should make sure that bee participants are as prepared as possible for the event. Talk to the kids beforehand about the emotions they may feel, and give them advice on deal with those emotions if they arise.

Instructions

1. Help kids practice spelling. They are likely to feel more comfortable if they think they're fully prepared. Find words used in previous spelling bees, if possible, and incorporate them into the spelling regimen. The more they spell and learn, the less likely they are to have issues with common emotions that sometimes grip children during spelling bees, such as fear, nervousness and anxiety.

2. Give them encouragement and positive reinforcement. Throughout the preparation process, give the kids verbal support to build up their confidence. Each time they spell a word correctly, tell them they're doing a good job. When they misspell a word, let them know in a way that maintains a positive outlook, such as saying that they'll get the word right the next time.

3. Run a simulation. Spelling bees can be real pressure cookers for children. One of the best ways to prepare them is to run a simulated bee that mimics the conditions the actual bee will be held under. One or more simulations can help kids to get nervousness and other emotions out of their systems prior to the actual bee, or at least dampen those emotions.

4. Give them advice about what to expect regarding emotional reactions. Let them know that feeling butterflies is natural and that the sensation can be overcome, or at least controlled. Talk to them about not letting their emotions get the best of them, and give them tips about what to do if nerves kick in, such as breathing exercises and thinking positive thoughts.

Write A Personal Statement For Med School

It can take many drafts to complete an effective personal statement.

Applying for medical school requires pre-med students to prepare a personal statement to accompany their formal application. Personal statements allow students the opportunity to introduce themselves to the review board or committee, and to make an argument for why they are an ideal candidate for that particular medical program. A poorly written personal statement can jeopardize a student's chances for getting accepted into the school. Accordingly, it is critical for students to learn compose successful personal statements.

Instructions

1. Review the application packet provided by the medical school, and look for instructions relating to personal statements. Look for specific requirements, such as word count and format, as well as what the content of the statement should cover. Remember that personal statement instructions may differ from one medical school to the next.

2. Create an outline of the information you wish to cover in your personal statement. Start with the introduction, then the body and end with the conclusion. Be prepared to write one paragraph for the introduction and conclusion, and one or two paragraphs within the body.

3. Begin composing your personal statement. Write the introduction first, and use this paragraph to introduce yourself to the audience. Make sure the introduction is catchy and warrants the attention of your reader. You will want your personal statement to stand out amongst the many that the medical school receives.

4. Compose the body of your personal statement after the introduction. Use these paragraphs to explain why medical school is important to you, what your career goals are and why you would make a successful doctor. Make these sections personal and avoid sounding cliche or like a textbook.

5. Write the concluding paragraph last, using it to wrap up your personal statement. Avoid repeating information already given in the body or introduction, and, instead, end the paper with something unique, such as a famous quotation.

6. Have a red pen handy (or a computer equivalent) and review your personal statement. Look for spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors, and use the red pen to mark up the areas that need correcting. If you use citations in your paper, be sure the references are available and that you have cited the information correctly.

7. Revise any part of the paper that does not read smoothly. Review the personal statement again after making corrections. Continue to make corrections and notes on the statement until you are happy with the way it reads.

8. Ask a friend, relative or colleague to read your personal statement and note any changes that should be made for a final revision. Print the final draft and submit it along with your application.

Set Up Special Education Accommodations

After a learning disability is diagnosed, it is time to set up special education accommodations and modifications or the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Although there are a lot of laws mandating this process, it is very important to take everyone's personal needs into consideration.

Instructions

1. Schedule an IEP meeting for everyone involved with the student, including the general education teachers, the special education teachers, the student's guidance counselor, the school psychologist, the nurse, the parents/guardians and the student, depending on his age.

2. Report the findings to everyone attending the meeting. Be clear about what the learning disabilities are and give examples of how these disabilities affect learning in the classroom.

3. Allow each person attending the meeting to present personal evaluations about the student, including concerns and suggested accommodations and modifications. This is a discussion period for everyone to share. Nothing is being decided yet, although notes need to be taken.

4. Consolidate the suggested accommodations and modifications into a concise list, present to the group and collect feedback and approval from everyone.

5. Fill out all required special education forms and have parents/guardian sign these forms.

6. Act as a liaison between the student and teachers to make sure that teachers have a copy of the IEP, understand the accommodations and modifications and meet the needs of the student daily. Also stay in contact with the parents to address their concerns throughout the school year.

7. Repeat this process yearly to meet federal standards, as well as to provide the best education for the student.

Take An Online Calculus Class

An online calculus class allows you to cover the course material at your own pace rather than at a pace the instructor chooses. Other benefits include starting the course at a time other than the traditional semester start times, no set class schedule and one-on-one interaction with an instructor, which may not be available in a large classroom setting.

Instructions

1. Sign up for Extended Learning at San Francisco State University and register for Online Calculus. Take the self-test to be accepted into the class. After being accepted, you will have access to a forum the instructor monitors, making this course fully interactive. Complete the course and transfer the credit to your school.

2. Take Distance Calculus through Shorter University. Start the course any time and go at your own pace; the course is based on a 14-week class, but you can finish sooner, if desired, or take up to eight months to complete the coursework. Start the course as soon as you register online.

3. Complete the the calculus coursework available through MIT's OpenCourseWare program. This is not an online calculus class, but rather the program allows you access to MIT course materials. You won't receive credit for completing the course work, but you can still learn calculus just as MIT students do through access to lectures, notes, assignments and exams.

2. Consider applying for accreditation, or at least holding your course up to accreditation standards. Most accredited TEFL programs are located internationally, however, so it is difficult to attain official accreditation in the United States. Find a review board in your area and contact them for more information. For example, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges offers the possibility of accreditation to schools in the northeast regions of the United States.

3. Recruit certified teachers for your program. Many programs overseas only require their teachers to be native English speakers, while others will require a bachelor's degree to qualify for certification. To provide the highest quality education for your students, hire the best employees you can to do the training. A certification and a familiarity with teaching are positive indicators of a person's ability to successfully lead a TEFL class.

4. Create a website to advertise your program. Many students look online for courses in their area and this is perhaps the best way for them to find you. You can also hang flyers around your community, take out ads in your local paper or recruit people through word of mouth.

1. Start with memorization. Although the school system seems to discourage memorization as a way to learn spelling and math, it can work. Learn the multiplication tables through 10. Learning the tables at least through 10 means you can figure out things longhand if you need to.

2. Practice. Much like we didn't all drive a car perfectly the first time we tried, math also takes practice. At the grocery store, work on estimating what the before-tax cost of your purchase will be, or calculate the amount you are saving via coupons. It is not necessary to be exact, just to work on math. As your math skills improve, you will get closer to the actual price.

3. Get rid of the digital products when possible. Digital clocks make it more difficult to teach children to read an old-style clock. Get a wind-up clock. Rather than using a calculator, use a pencil and paper to practice basic math.

4. Pay for everything for one week, or even one day, in cash. With the constant use of credit cards and debit cards, people can;'t even make change properly anymore without a computer or cash register to tell them what the change is. Pay some bills with cash, and if you are due to receive change, try to figure out beforehand how much you should get back.

5. Practice on math worksheets. Make random math problems for yourself on a sheet of paper and do the math without using a calculator. Then, use the calculator to check your work. Getting to be good at math is mostly just a matter of memorization and practice.

Studying for any exam can be a little "taxing," but the Federal Income Tax Exam is almost as difficult as doing the IRS 1040 form. Everything can be a little easier if you break it down and write it out.

Instructions

1. Break down the tax into smaller categories. This is done for you at the IRS website. The link address is in the Resources section below. Begin with the Individuals category, starting with publication 17, and follow the same procedure, outlined below, for all in the category.

2. Take notes on each publication as you read it.

3. Highlight portions you think may be important or that you don't totally understand.

4. Create ten to twenty questions with the answers on the back for each publication and then set them aside for later.

5. Once you have completed all the publications in that category, give yourself the exam that you created. If you have 90 percent of them correct, you should feel confident. Remember, you created the exam so the percentage correct should be pretty high. Review the questions that you missed and mark them for later review.

6. Take all the tests that you have created once you have finished all categories: Part 1--Individuals, Part 2--Businesses and Part 3--Representation, Practice and Procedures.

Being smart is no guarantee of scoring well on the exam. Even the brightest students take the time to prepare for the test long before test day. The better prepared you are for the test, the higher your score will be.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with the content of the ACT by visiting the official ACT website's Test Prep page (see References) and downloading a free copy of Preparing for the ACT. The 80-page document includes test-taking strategies and full-length practice exams.

2. Purchase an official ACT review guide several months before your scheduled exam and study it regularly. Avoid overwhelming yourself with too much information by gradually familiarizing yourself with each section. ACT prep guides are available for purchase from most major booksellers.

3. Take an ACT review course. Having an instructor review the material and explain the different portions of the exam can further reinforce your ongoing studies. Many ACT prep courses also offer timed practice tests, which can give you a sense of your strengths and weaknesses and better prepare you for the exam. Ask your guidance counselor for recommended ACT prep courses in your area.

4. Get plenty of sleep the night before the exam so your mind is fresh and rested. The official ACT website also recommends wearing comfortable clothes and dressing in layers in case of temperature changes in the test center. The idea is to be comfortable so you can focus on the exam.

5. Relax before you begin your exam by taking some deep breaths. The ACT test preparation booklet suggests thinking of pleasant things while tensing and relaxing your muscles. Repeat these or other stress-reducing techniques before each test section.

Use A Comma In A List

Commas are used in many ways. One of the most common usages is to separate items in a list. Unfortunately, many of us have forgotten the rules for using commas in lists. Here's a reminder.

Instructions

1. Use commas when writing a list of at least three items in a sentence. Place a comma after each item in the list, unless you are using the word "and" to conjoin the final two items. For example: "She likes chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and pistachio ice cream."

2. Use commas when writing a list of items in an academic paper. Place a comma after each item in the list, including before the word "and." For example: "Germany annexed Austria, Poland, and the Netherlands."

3. Remember that any type of word can considered an item on a list. Nouns, verbs and adjectives all need commas when you use three or more.For example: "Delicately, gracefully and joyfully, the ballerina twirled onto the stage."

4. Include a comma after each independent clause you list in a sentence. (An independent clause contains a subject and a verb and could stand on its own as a sentence, as it expresses a complete thought.)For example: "She liked asparagus, but not enough to eat it daily."

5. Switch to a semicolon when your list includes multi-word items, especially if those items include commas.For example: "The people who are coming are the governor, Lucy Smith; her husband, Tom Green; and the judge, Bill Thompson."

The CollegeChoice 529 is a direct savings plan sponsored by the state of Indiana. The plan allows you to invest in a child's college education over an extended period. This college savings plan is tax-free and money you put in the fund is tax-deductible. Money saved with the fund is for use at a variety of state and national universities in the US. Purchasing a plan takes approximately 10 minutes, according to the College Choice 529 Direct Savings website.

Instructions

1. Navigate to the Indiana CollegeChoice 529 website. The web address is listed in the Reference section.

2. Click on "Enroll," which is located in a toolbar at the top of the screen.

3. Click on the button that says "Open an Account Today," which appears in the new window.

4. Read the new screen that tells you the information you need to have available to complete the process. Click "Next" to move on.

5. Read the privacy statement and click on "I agree" to move on to the next screen. Enter in the information as the screens guide you. You will be prompted on delivery methods for account information, personal and beneficiary details, and the type of plan you want to choose (age-based or individual). Click next when you are finished filling out information in one window to move on to the next.

Cvs Pharmacy Scholarships

CVS Caremark, a national pharmacy chain, makes charitable donations through the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation. Donations by the company fund the trust. In addition to offering scholarships to the children of CVS Caremark employees, the trust provides funds to pharmacy schools around the U.S., which the schools use for pharmacy student scholarships. The trust awarded $750,000 in grants in 2009, and about $4 million between 2001 and 2009.

Apply

Individual pharmacy schools administer the CVS Caremark scholarships. If you are interested in winning a scholarship, you need to apply through the financial aid office at your pharmacy school, not through CVS.

Types of Scholarships

The scholarships appear to differ by pharmacy school. St. John's University offers the award to a fourth-year student "who demonstrates academic excellence and a strong commitment to community pharmacy practice." The University of Toledo in Ohio offers the scholarships to fourth or fifth year students who may be interested in retail pharmacy.

Who Offers the Scholarships

Many pharmacy schools offer CVS Caremark scholarships. In addition to St. John's University and the University of Toledo, pharmacy schools in the program include Belmont University, the University of Iowa, Rutgers University and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Make A Concept Map In Microsoft Word

Concept maps show the relation between thoughts and ideas.

Concept maps can be used in planning a novel, story or even an essay of a few hundred words. The elements of concept maps link ideas that are related and should be dealt with in a particular order. A concept map is used to organize these ideas into a coherent structure so that a plan can be devised. Microsoft Word is a word processing program that has the ability to draw shapes. These shapes can be linked to create a concept map.

Instructions

1. Open Microsoft Word.

2. Insert a drawing canvas by clicking the "Insert" tab and selecting "Shapes" in the Illustrations group. Click "New Drawing Canvas."

3. Select the "Insert" tab, click "Shapes" and choose "Oval" under the Basic Shapes section. Click and hold your mouse and drag your mouse to the size you want the circle. Hold the "Shift" key as you drag to keep your shape as a circle. This first shape is usually the main idea that you are starting from. The size can be adjusted by clicking the circle and dragging it from the edges.

4. Type your concepts or ideas into the inside of each circle by right-clicking on the circle, selecting "Add Text" and typing in whatever your idea is.

5. Repeat the process again and place the next circle with your next concept near the first circle. You can alter the size of the circle depending on how much importance you place on the concept.

6. Link your concepts with either an arrow like a flow chart or a simple line. To use an arrow, click the "Shapes" button, choose the type of line you want under the Lines section.

7. To connect shapes, click on the first shape and then click on the second shape.

8. To draw a straight line, click "Line Button" image and drag to draw the line.

9. If you need to change the length of any of the arrows or lines, click on the line and point to the circles that appear at the end, then drag them to the desired length.

10. Repeat the process with other concepts to make your concept map.

11. When you are finished, save your document.

Students can save time by attending an online religious school, and obtain a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate's degree. This is because students can take religious classes at their own pace. They can do the homework from their offices or homes. Students will want to check accreditation of online schools. Regent University

Regent University's School of Divinity is accredited via the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) Commission on Accrediting. Regent University offers a Master of Arts in academic concentrations.
