Precautions Taken After A Bite From A Rat

Wild rats do not carry plague, and there has never been a case in the U.S. of a human contracting rabies from a rat bite. Rats do, however, carry other diseases and parasites. It is imperative that you stop the bleeding, clean the rat bite thoroughly, apply topical antibiotic cream to the wound and go to either your doctor or an emergency room as soon as possible.

Stop the Bleeding

Have the victim lie down and, if possible, elevate the part of the body that is bleeding. Place a folded towel over the bite wound and apply uninterrupted pressure on it for 15 minutes. Do not lift the towel after a few minutes to see if the bleeding has stopped, even if you think it has. Also, if the towel becomes saturated with blood, don't remove it. Place another towel on top of it and keep applying pressure. If the bleeding doesn't stop, do not apply a tourniquet, continue applying direct pressure and seek immediate help.

Clean the Wound

After the bleeding stops, clean the wound by flushing it with running water and soap. Do not use hydrogen peroxide, iodine or rubbing alcohol, as these can cause damage within the wound, however, you can dab them around the outside of the wound to make it sterile. Apply antibiotic ointment inside the wound. Don't wait because antibiotic ointment cannot penetrate a scab. Because wounds with airtight bandages are more likely to become infected, cover the wound with a loose bandage.

Seek Medical Attention

Contact your family doctor or present yourself to the emergency room of a hospital. They will inspect the wound and check your tetanus-vaccine history. Stitches may be administered, depending on the severity of the wound. The wound will be re-treated with topical antibiotic and re-bandaged. Oral antibiotics may also be prescribed to ward off any infection. You will be advised to watch for reddening around the wound site and/or a purulent discharge emitting from the wound. Either of these is an indication of infection and requires a different antibiotic.

Possible Diseases

Rats carry parasites and microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria. The biggest concern is with rat-bite fever that can be transmitted to a human from a rat bite. This bacterium causes muscle pain, chills, fever and headaches. The particular bacteria associated with rat-bite fever (streptobacillus moniliformis) can make its way to the heart and cause serious complications. Rat-bite fever is treated with penicillin and other antibiotics.

Domesticated Rats

A bite from a domesticated rat should be treated as a bite from a rat in the wild. You have no idea what diseases the rat contracted before it became your pet. If you are bitten by a domesticated rat, stop the bleeding, flush the wound, apply antibiotic ointment and loosely bandage. Once the wound is treated, call your doctor.

Under the Access Your Account tab, click on Log In to Your Account. Again, you will need to enter your SS#, last two digits of your last name, date of birth, and PIN number. Click Submit. You will now see your Account Summary.

4. Under Manage Your Account, choose the option Forbearance Request. You will now be advised that you need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher. Choose Yes if you already have this, or click No to install it now.

5. View the various types of forbearance by clicking on the name of the forbearance. This should list the requirements you must meet in order to apply for the forbearance.

6. Once you have chosen the forbearance that fits your individual situation, you can choose to Download Blank Forms, or you can choose the Interactive Form-Download option. In some cases you can Submit an Online Request, which requires NO paperwork. Make your selected choice. Follow the specific instructions given to you to complete the application process.

7. Always follow-up on your request by returning to the Federal Student Loan Servicing web site, log in to your account, and choose the Your Account tab. This will allow you to see the status of your request for Forbearance.

A very common task in math is to round numbers to a specified place value. That place value may be to the left or right of the decimal point. Moving left of the decimal point, you encounter the ones, tens, hundreds and then thousands place. Moving to the right of the decimal place, you'll find the tenths, hundredths and thousandths place. The basic rule is that if the number to the right of the rounding-off point is five or greater, round up by one. If that number on the right is zero to four, discard the number and everything to the right, replacing them with zeros.

Instructions

1. Choose a number to round. For example, suppose your teacher gives you the number 15,729 and tells you to round it to the nearest hundred. Circle the hundreds-place digit, 7.

2. Look at the digit to the immediate right of the hundreds place, which is 2. Because it is 4 or lower, simply replace it and the the number to its right with a zero. Keep the 7 in place. The result is 15,700.

3. Try a rounding-up example. Suppose you're told to round 7,345.6189 to the nearest hundredth. So you would circle the hundredth place, in this case 1.

4. Look at the place to the right of the hundredths place to find 8, which is 5 or higher. That means you must round up the 1 to a 2, then substitute zeros for everything to the right.

5. Write down the answer, 7,345.6200. Because the zeros are not relevant to the number's value, you can discard them, so the answer would be 7,345.62.

6. Watch out for chain reactions. For instance, suppose you have to round 39,814 to the nearest thousand. Because the digit in the place to the right of the thousands place is 8, which is 5 or higher, you need to round up. The problem is that you have to increase the 9 in the thousands place, but you can't make it a 10. So you need to increase the 3 in the ten thousands place to a 4 and make the 9 a zero.

4. Count out 2 pennies and place them on the table. Write 2 on the chalkboard.

5. Place another penny to the side of your grouping and say "1". Write 1 on the chalkboard.

6. Tell the child you have "added to" the other pennies. Write the addition sign between the 2 and the 1.

7. Ask how many pennies there are now. Together count all 3 pennies. After counting, write an equal sign to the right of the equation and a 3 for the answer.

8. Read the equation and repeat the process with different numbers.

1. Help the individual secure housing. Getting a place to live is the first step towards independent living. Help him peruse the housing ads and select a place that fits both his needs and his budget. This step can be scary for the recovering addict.

2. Work with the recovering addict to set goals. Help the person prioritize by assisting with setting goals. Recovering addicts face many steps ahead to get their lives headed in a positive direction. Help create a list of all of plans and rank them in order of importance.

3. Create a schedule to help the person properly manage his or her time. Use a dry erase or poster board to create a daily schedule, which helps create stability. This also helps recovering addicts use their time effectively and productively.

4. Regularly share meals with the person you are working with. If the recovering addict is not an adept cook, some general lessons would be helpful. You can work as the person's sous chef if he or she has well-developed culinary skills. Sharing meals helps recovering addicts with feelings of isolation that often accompany the transition to a sober life.

5. Assist the recovering addict in setting up and maintaining a bank account and budget. When the individual has saved up some money, take a trip to the bank to set up the account. Demonstrate keep a hand-written or computerized budget to ensure that money is well spent and financial obligations are met.

6. Teach the individual computer skills or help him enroll in a computer skills course. Many occupations require at least some computer skills. Helping recovering addicts develop these technology skills means they are preparing for their futures. Check out local libraries or community colleges for free or inexpensive computer courses.

7. Take steps toward creating a resume. A well-written resume is often needed to get any job interviews and helps candidates land a position. Using a word processing program and template, work with the individual to build a resume and polish it prior to submitting it to potential employers.

8. Make it clear that the recovering addict can contact you in a time of need. Relapse is more likely if the addict does not have a support system. Be as supportive as possible. By doing so, you can a partner in recovery.

Write An Acceptance Letter To Graduate School

Undergraduates must send a formal letter accepting their position in graduate school.

Finding out that you have be accepted to graduate school is one of the most exciting times of your life. You have a lot to do: packing and organizing for the move, completing financial aid forms, signing contracts for your graduate assistantship (if applicable); the list goes on. Do not forget, however, to formally accept your position as a graduate student in the department or the admissions committee might assume that you are not interested.

Instructions

1. Format your letter so that it will have one-inch margins; this is the standard for business letters. Then adjust the type so that your lines will be single-spaced and aligned left. Finally, set the typeface to Times New Roman, Garamond, or another typeface with serifs or "feet" at the top and bottom of the letter; these typefaces were designed for the printed page and they appear more professional.

2. Type your address, without your name, at the top of the page. Skip a space and type the date. Skip another space and type in the name of the graduate coordinator (typically the person who notified you of the acceptance), her title, department name, university name and department address.

3. Address the letter to Dear Dr. (name of graduate coordinator). A graduate coordinator almost always has a PhD; address her as "Dr." in any correspondence.

4. Begin the letter by stating that you accept your position as a graduate student in the school. Be very specific and name the department and degree program, as the graduate coordinator will probably forward the letter to the graduate school, which is a separate department at the university.

5. Mention any other positions or associated awards and accept those as well. You will receive additional contracts to sign for your graduate assistantships and fellowships, if applicable, but they will appreciate knowing your intentions.

6. Express appreciation for the position and remind them of your contact information in the closing paragraph.

7. Close the letter by typing "Respectfully," then skip three lines and type your full name. Print the letter and sign your name in blue or black ink above your typed name. Retain a copy of the letter for your records.

Physical Requirements For A Cdl

You'll need a CDL to drive a big rig.

If you want to become a trucker, you'll need to obtain your Commercial Driver's License, or CDL. This license ensures that the tractor-trailer driver meets certain state guidelines. A driver must prove he or she has the knowledge and skills to drive this size truck, plus the driver must pass certain physical requirements. The physical exam can be performed by any licensed medical examiner and is good for two years.

Limbs Must Be Intact

Federal Regulations state that to qualify for a CDL, you must not be missing a foot, leg, hand, or arm. Also, you can't have an arm, hand, finger, leg, or foot problem that interferes with your ability to drive and operate the semi-truck. However, a skill performance evaluation is available for someone who has lost a limb, and if he passes this test, he may be able to use a prosthetic limb to operate the vehicle.

Certain Diseases and Disorders Are Disqualifiers

Drivers must be relatively healthy to qualify for a CDL. If you have diabetes mellitus and take insulin to control your symptoms, you are ineligible. Certain cardiovascular diseases, respiratory dysfunction, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or arthritic or neuromuscular disease that interferes with your ability to operate and control a truck may also disqualify you from a CDL.

No History of Psychosis Allowed

Applicants who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder do not meet the physical requirements for obtaining a CDL. Mental or nervous disorders are not allowed either.

Must Be Able to See

A qualified truck driver must be able to distinguish between red, green, and amber on a traffic light. He must have a distance visual acuity score of 20/40 and a distant binocular acuity in both eyes of 20/40, with or without corrective lenses. His field of vision must be good too, with at least 70 degrees horizontally in both eyes.

Good Hearing is a Must

A semi-truck driver must not have hearing loss of more than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. This is with or without a hearing aid.

No Substance Abuse Problems

If you have a history of substance abuse, you can forget your dream of becoming a professional truck driver. Alcoholics are strictly prohibited. Amphetamine, narcotics, and other addictive drugs are forbidden unless they are prescribed by a doctor who is familiar with the driver's medical history and driving duties. If a drug will in any way impair the ability to drive and operate a truck safely, it is not allowed.

Phlebotomy Myths And Facts

The barber pole is a visual relic of the traditional tonsorial phlebotomy services.

To modern Western sensibilities, the practice of bloodletting is barbaric and counterintuitive. Yet, for many centuries, bloodletting, or phlebotomy as Western medicine knows it, enjoyed a lengthy period of popularity in many cultures. Though uncommon as a cure in modern medicine, it still finds uses in the treatment of some rare conditions and for the removal of blood for diagnostic tests.

Hippocratic Phlebotomy

Ancient Greek physicians strongly believed in the usefulness of phlebotomy. Like many medicinal practices, physicians employed bloodletting in the name of balance. Black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood were generally understood to be the four basic substances of the body, and each needed to maintain the correct balance in order for the patient to remain healthy. If blood caused the imbalance, bloodletting was a usual prescription for a wide variety of ailments.

Barber-Surgeons

The red and white spiral symbol harkens back to the tonsorial profession's other traditional practice: drawing blood. Throughout the medieval period in Europe, barbers worked as specialists in phlebotomy, and visitors often had blood removed as a routine procedure.

Phlebotomy as a Cure-All

The belief that bloodletting cured most, if not all, illnesses formed a widespread myth of the practice until the late 1800s. Physicians treated virtually every aliment, even those principally defined by bleeding, such as amputations and hemorrhaging, by removing blood from the patient. Often, the physician withdrew blood until the patient fainted.

Leeching

Physicians often used leeches in their bloodletting procedures until the late nineteenth century and the rise of "mechanical leeches" and other devices. Though effective at drawing blood, an individual leech only consumed about half an ounce of blood before dropping off the patient. This led physicians to use as many as fifty leeches in one session, placed in locations as uncomfortable as inside the patent's mouth or rectum.

Though debunked as ineffective in most of its historical uses, phlebotomy remains a useful treatment in some cases. Withdrawing blood successfully treats hereditary hemochromatosis, a condition of excess iron in the blood. Polycythemia, characterized by an overabundance of red blood cells, also benefits from the practice of removing blood.

Modern Phlebotomists

Most modern blood drawing functions not as a cure but as a diagnosis tool. Phlebotomists specialize in the procedures for drawing blood for diagnostic tests and other routine procedures, including checking blood sugar and cholesterol levels, blood donation, toxicology tests and DNA tests. You may have been told all your life that getting a higher education is the key to success. Yet the costs of going to college are staggering and continue to rise year after year, making it virtually impossible to attend without incurring a hefty amount of student loans. If you don't have scholarships, look to the federal government to help pay some or all of your tuition through grants and in exchange for your service to the country.

1. Apply for federal grants. Depending on your financial situation, you might be eligible for some federal grants that will help reduce your tuition bill. The most common federal grant is the Pell Grant. This need-based grant is offered to students from low-income households and the specific amount you receive will depend on your tuition. A Pell Grant is typically automatically awarded based on the income information you included in your Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA). The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is available for students with from extremely low-income households with little to no expected family contribution. If you join Americorps, a volunteer program which bases volunteers around the United States, they will repay back a small portion of your Stafford loans.

4. Be a public service employee. For those who choose to work in the public sector, become a federal, state, or local government employee, you might qualify to have the rest of your student loans forgiven after 10 years of service and 120 payments on your own. Known as the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, it rewards eligible full-time public service employees, including public school teachers, police officers, public librarians, social works and non-profit private employees. The PSAT is a test taken by high school students in their early high school years. The test prepares young high school students to take the SAT test by providing a testing situation similar to that of the SAT. The test scores received on your PSAT not only provide you with information regarding what academic areas you excel at and which ones you need to work on, it also gives you the opportunity to qualify for scholarships. Once you take the PSAT, you can access your grades through the My College Quickstart website; the site provides your scores and a personalized study program for you based on your answers and scores on the PSAT.

Instructions

1. Go to the My College Quickstart login page on the College Board website (quickstart.collegeboard.com) to create an account. Click "Sign Up" to create your account.

2. Enter your full name, gender, date of birth, email address and your anticipated date of high school graduation. Enter your parents' first and last names and email addresses.

3. Create a user name and password. Choose and answer a security question and read the terms and conditions. Agree to the terms and conditions by checking the box to agree and submit your registration.

4. View your account page and choose the link that allows you to view and access your PSAT scores.

What Is A "Dep Verif" Form For The Fafsa

The first step many college students take on the road to a diploma is filling out the FAFSA form.

FAFSA stands for "free application for federal aid." It is the form students fill out in order to apply for financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid office for post-secondary education. This assistance comes in the forms of grants and loans. The application process requests a lot of detailed financial information. For potential students who are considered dependents, parents are required to answer and provide financial documentation. Occasionally, the Department of Education will require more information and verification from the applicant. This is called verification.

Verification Selection

Approximately one-third of all FAFSA applications are chosen for verification by either the Department of Education or by the school the applicant is applying to. Some of the reasons an application is chosen for verification include being chosen randomly, the application submitted was incomplete, some of the information provided was estimated or some of the information provided is inconsistent. If the applicant is applying as a dependent, the verification is labeled "Dep Verif" for identification purposes.

Documentation

If selected for verification, the applicant should contact the financial aid office of the school she is applying to. It can take up to 45 days to process a verification and no financial aid funds will be dispersed until the process is completed. It is important to provide all requested documentation; however, the applicant should not turn in any documentation that has not been requested.

Verification

The financial aid officer in charge of the verification will check how the information reported on the application compares to the documentation that is turned in. Some of the information verified is how many people are living in the household, how many are attending college, what is the total household income, including child support, and all federal and state tax information.

Financial Aid

If the financial aid officer finds any disparity between what is on the application and what is in the documents provided, the corrections must be made to the application. These corrections can sometimes change how much aid an applicant is eligible for. Not only does the verification process help prevent students from receiving funds they aren't eligible for, but it also ensures that qualified students receive all the aid they're entitled to.

The Best Places To Vacation With A Beach Where You Can Go Sport Fishing

Warm, sunny weather makes the best conditions for sport fishing.

Sport fishing, the practice of fishing for recreation or for competition, can be performed either in fresh water or saltwater, from the shore or from a boat. The best way to plan a sport fishing vacation is to choose a destination where you're likely to be successful in catching fish and easily find accommodations. Southern Florida, Southern Baja California and Point Loma, California are excellent locations to soak up some sun and reel in big fish.

Jupiter Inlet, Florida

Located just half hour drive north of West Palm Beach, Florida, this rock jetty is located at the point where the Loxahatchee River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Jupiter is a popular vacation town, known for its sunny weather and white sand beaches, as well as being home to many celebrities. The best spot to fish is the south side of the jetty, where mackerel, snook, eagle rays and tarpon are commonly found. The beach and jetty are accessible from the Jupiter Beach Park.

Islamorada, Florida Keys

Known as the sport fishing capital of the world, Islamorada holds more sport fishing tournaments than any other location. Islamorada is made up of four islands of the Florida Keys: Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key and Lower Matecumbe Key. Between the four islands, all types of accommodations are available, including luxury resorts, hotels, motels, private rentals and even campsites. Each of the islands offers a beautiful beach, from which tarpon, marlin, sailfish, snook, wahoo, tuna, kingfish and several species of shark are easy to find.

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Located at the southernmost point of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, this crystal-clear water destination is a mecca for catching yellowfin tuna, marlin, wahoo, mahi mahi and many more species. The Cabo San Lucas Marina is the departure point for hundreds of charter books that scour the warm waters of the Golf of Cortez. There is a long, uncrowded beach just south of the marina, and hotels dedicated to American tourists are scattered throughout the area.

Point Loma, San Diego, California

Situated to the west of Coronado Island, the Point Loma Peninsula covers Ocean Beach to the west, and Shelter Island and Harbor Island to the east. Heading north form the tip of Point Loma, you'll pass the famous surf spot known as Sunset Cliffs before arriving in Ocean Beach, an excellent surfing and sunbathing beach with an area dedicated to dogs, known as Dog Beach. Located on San Diego Bay, Shelter Island and Harbor Island are protected from the surf and store local residents' yachts and fishing boats. Plan a charter boat trip in the harbor area to catch local rockfish, lingcod, barracuda and tuna.

Goats are becoming increasingly common as a source of meat and dairy products, but buying the livestock, feed and other infrastructure can be a daunting task. Though grant funding is perpetually limited and competition for grants is always fierce, finding a grant to fund a goat farm is possible. The website Goat Connection recommends being creative when looking for potential grantors and while completing the initial application for funding. Grantors who are interested in supporting initiatives other than goat farming, such as new farmers or disadvantaged farmers, could be interested in funding a goat farm. The key to attaining grant funding is selling your project as the best use of a grantor's funds.

Grant Applications

Grant applications are tedious, often intimidating documents, so much so that many people hire professionals to write their grant applications for them. Though every granting agency will have its own requirements for grant applications, a common thread is stitched between them. The website Goat Connection recommends preparing for a cover letter that introduces your project, a title page with contact information, a statement of the problem or objective you want to address as well as detailed plan of how you will do so. If you intend to build an environmentally-friendly goat waste container, for example, describe in minute detail how your farm will benefit from their funds, and how the funds will ameliorate your larger community.

Locate and Find Granting Agencies

State and federal government agencies are a plentiful source of grant funds for goat farms, though private agencies also offer grant opportunities. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) manages funding for a number of federal farming agencies and a few state agencies. Apply for a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) grant if your goal is to grow your goat farm while minimizing your footprint on the environment. SARE grants support all varieties of livestock production, including personal goat farms. Many states, such as Minnesota, have a livestock support grant program for which goat farmers are eligible.

Showcase Your Farm or Idea

The grant application is your first, and sometimes only, opportunity to detail your farm and its needs to a grantor. In the cover letter and your statement of how you will use the grantor's funds, use vivid descriptions and precise details to paint a picture of your goat farm before and after the grantor awards you funding. Appeal to the grantor's sense of logic, and explain how your qualifications for the grant funding set you apart from the competition. If you are applying for a grant that aims to help livestock producers keep agricultural waste from entering into a water source, detailing the number of goats you have and the volume of agricultural waste they produce will help the grantor to understand your need for the funds.

Meet and Exceed Their Expectations

Grant-making organizations have a plan for their finds before they begin reviewing applications. In addition to showcasing your own need for grant funding, to win funding you must also fit the paradigm the grantor has imagined for its funds. The Guardian newspaper lists several grant-making agencies, each of which has a specific focus in mind for their funds. The Trust Partnership, for example, supports education and volunteerism. Were your goat farm to apply for a grant from such an organization, you would need to explain how your goat farm would use the funds to support volunteers on your farm or perhaps to encourage agricultural education.
