Federal student loans are government programs, such as Stafford or Perkins loans, that help students pay for the costs associated with college. Though these are federal programs, loans are distributed by private lenders. When you leave school, you have a six- to nine-month grace period before payments are due depending on the type of loan you obtained. Payments are made directly to the lender unless you are considered in default. In Texas, defaulted student loans are turned over to the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation.
Instructions
1. Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-433-3243 or visit the National Student Loan Data System website (see Resources) to obtain information about your student loans if you don't have statements or paperwork. This database maintains a record of all federal student loans. Provide your Social Security number to get the desired information.
2. Call the lender to update your loan records. Confirm name, address and Social Security Number information. Make sure current statement will be sent to you and confirm when your payments are due.
3. Send payments directly to the lender or ask whether an automatic payment option is available.
4. Call the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation at 800-222-6297 if your loan is in default. If your loan is turned over to TGSLC, payments are made directly to it. You can reinstate your loan from default with six months of on-time and full payments, but the loan remains at TGSLC. Credit card payments are accepted for a $6 transaction fee, or you can mail payments or hand-deliver them. Ask the representative perform each option.
The GRE is a standardized test that many graduate university programs require applicants to take before applying in order to assess their readiness for graduate study. According to ETS, who administers the GRE, the test measures verbal and quantitative reasoning, analytical writing skills and critical thinking. GRE stands for Graduate Record Exam.
Corporate Courses
Many companies offer test preparation courses for the GRE. These can be quite expensive, but are geared toward maximizing your score on the test, which will help you get into the graduate program of your choice. Some have online courses which can be completed at home, and provide access to an instructor who can answer questions.
University Sponsored
Some universities offer free or low-cost GRE preparation courses to their students. Check with your school to see if it offers such a program. If there is no university-wide course available, it is possible that individual departments within your university will have GRE classes. You might have to dig around to find a class, but if you do, you'll save yourself a bundle even as you improve your score.
Self Study
You can study for the GRE on your own as well. There are many books on the market that explain in detail the types of questions on the GRE, as well as test-taking strategies. There are also many free internet sites devoted to helping non-native English speakers expand their vocabularies. ETS provides free information on preparing for the GRE, as well as practice tests on its website.
Considerations
For some competitive graduate programs, the GRE score is very important. According to ETS, the GRE is a major factor in comparing the qualifications of applicants. When choosing a GRE course, honestly assess your current test-taking ability and choose the course that you believe will get you the score you need to be accepted into the school of your choice.

Opening a comma separated text file into Microsoft Excel is often necessary when you are working with CSV, or comma-separated values. A CSV is the most common format for importing and exporting spreadsheets and databases. The CSV format is necessary when transferring data between computers when the internal word sizes, formatting needs and style structures are different.
Instructions
1. Open Excel. Then using the open file command, enter the Text Import Wizard.
2. Specify that the file is a delimited file and then select commas when prompted to do so. You will then get the data separated into the necessary fields. If this doesn’t work and you have all the data in one field and still separated by commas, read on.
3. Choose the Data menu from the top of your screen and move the text into columns. This will convert the one column of text into multiple columns. You may have to set a few parameters when prompted, including choosing commas as the qualifier. Excel will show you an example of how it will sort the data before you have to finalize the task.
Non-traditional law students have many decisions to make.
Many law students take a traditional track to law school, earning an undergraduate degree and then immediately attending law school. Many people, however, do not fit this track due to educational or personal circumstances. Some law students work before starting college and others work for a period of years before applying to law schools. There are law school options for non-traditional students, and finding the right place for your needs is important.
What is Non-Traditional?
Non-traditional students are those who do not follow the typical educational path. They could be recent immigrants who desire to become lawyers, people who have earned an undergraduate degree and had always wanted to attend law school but went into the workforce because of financial obligations, people who have seen their children grow up and leave the nest, allowing them to pursue their dream of becoming a lawyer, and many others.
Possible Hurdles
For non-traditional students who have a family that depends on them, attending law school may present difficult issues. Balancing family responsibilities with the time requirements of law school could bring conflicts; and if the student also works full- or part-time the balance can be even more difficult. Age concerns also could become a hurdle, especially for non-traditional students who are much older than students who began law school immediately after receiving an undergraduate degree. Finances also must be considered, because law school tuition can cost $40,000 per year or more.
The Facts About Law Careers
Students need to realize that only a small number of lawyers become wealthy in the profession. A great number of lawyers working at small firms, in government or with public-interest organizations may earn $50,000 a year or less, depending on the location. A law education will require, in most cases, a minimum of at least three years of full-time schooling. If you will only be able to attend law school on a part-time basis, it will take longer than three years. This time frame, and the financial implications of a lengthy education, need to be considered by most candidates for law school.
Admissions
Nearly every law school will accept non-traditional students, and a few may even be willing to relax the admission requirements slightly for non-traditional students who would bring a valuable perspective or unique life experiences to the educational institution. The admissions basics, however, remain the same: taking the Law School Admissions Test, undergraduate courses that are acceptable to the admissions office, and a commendable undergraduate grade-point average and course load, along with possible admissions essays and/or personal statements.

The philosphy of the nursing profession is defined by four basic concepts.
The nursing profession is built upon four key concepts: person, environment, health and nursing. These four concepts encompass the key tenets of nursing philosophy and practice and define the means by which individuals should be viewed and treated within the nursing profession. The four concepts are interrelated and each is built upon the foundation of the concept that precedes it.
Person
In nursing theory, human beings are considered in terms of their physiological, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural selves. People are evaluated in terms of their individual place in society as well as their relationships to their family, community and society as a whole. Additionally, human beings are viewed in terms of their individual needs and how nursing practice is applied to meet these needs. The purpose of nursing and nursing theory is to identify how a particular individual's needs are either met or not met, to predict future needs and to prioritize those needs in order of importance.
Environment
The environment concept of nursing comprises all the internal and external factors that act on human beings and affect their behavior and development. This includes psychological, spiritual, social, physical and cultural forces as well as the environment in which nursing care is provided. The idea behind this concept is that the environment influences individual and collective health and that individuals who experience a positive, comfortable nursing environment are more likely to demonstrate good health versus those who receive a level of care that is lacking.
Health
The concept of health refers to an individual's physical, mental and social well-being and at what point they are on the health spectrum, which ranges from good health to poor health or death. Health is considered to be affected by genetic factors, environmental factors, lifestyle factors and external mechanisms, such as bacteria. A person's place on the health spectrum is constantly changing and in a nursing context, it's the responsibility of nursing professionals to identify the patient's place on the spectrum and to take steps to help that person's health improve.
Nursing
Nursing refers to the process of caring for the health of human beings and assisting individuals in meeting their needs while also teaching them the basics of caring for themselves. The responsibilities of the nursing profession are to promote good health, to prevent disease when possible, to promote healing in those who are ill and to ease the suffering of dying patients. The concept of nursing extends beyond the health care facility to the community and society as a whole, and views individual health and the environment as closely related. Nursing is defined as care that is tailored to the needs of individuals and that is provided in an efficient and effective manner.

"Is debt weighing you down?" the ad queried above an image of a stressed woman holding a pencil as she poured over credit card bills. Seeing this message every time I logged in to my bank account online really annoyed me. Yes, it was weighing me down, and I was trying to get out from under the debt, but the daily reminder irked me. Perhaps it even helped motivate me to get my finances in better shape, although my motivation level was already quite high. Once you realize the effects of consumer debt, you want out. At least, I did. Here's get out of debt fast.
Instructions
Get out of debt fast!
1. Get a realistic picture of your debt. Locate all of your most recent statements for credit card accounts, financed purchases, student debt, personal credit lines and home equity loans. Add the outstanding balances to arrive at your total non-first-mortgage debt amount.
2. Find out how much money you can put toward your debt each month. What is your income, and what are your monthly expenses for housing, transportation, food and incidentals? Subtract these costs as well as monthly debt bills, from your monthly income number. The remainder is what you can hopefully put toward debt each month.
3. Make more money if you have a shortfall or only a small amount to put toward debt each month. Look for a second job or pick up extra hours at work. Cash flow is critical if you want to know get out of debt fast. The only two ways to improve cash flow are to 1) make more money or 2) spend less money. You'll likely want to do a combination of these two.
4. Budget your money and make your extra debt payment toward your smallest debt. Once that debt is paid off in full, add the whole amount you were paying toward that debt, into the payment for your next smallest debt. Dave Ramsey calls this the Debt Snowball.
5. Cut back on your regular expenses as much as possible. Buy used, repair what is broken, and forgo luxuries. Put your savings toward your debt. Make payments in the middle of the month if you have to in order to keep from spending it.
6. Use coupons and shop the supermarket sales to save money on your food budget (see Resources, below, for a good coupon site). Also consider planting some of your own herbs and vegetables in the spring and summer.
7. Put everything "extra", from unexpected monetary bonuses and gifts to income form side jobs, toward your debt payments and emergency fund. A small emergency fund is important to have while paying off debt, to keep you from incurring new debt from unexpected expenses.

There are four Fashion Design Schools in Montreal.
Perhaps it's the blend of French culture and a thriving metropolis that makes Montreal a hot spot for fashion. According to "Travel Lady" magazine, Montreal has long been "known as the official headquarters of the Canadian Rag Trade." Montreal has its own fashion week and its own fashion district near the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Programs in fashion design supply fresh new talent to the fashion studios around Montreal.
Canadian Degrees
Canadian universities issue Bachelor of Arts degrees the same way a university in the United States would, but they often take three years to complete instead of four because students specialize in a field of study quicker. In Quebec you can also get a Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC), called a Diploma of College Studies in English, which is for two years of pre-university study or three years of vocational school. Some Universities require a DEC before you can enroll.
LaSalle College
LaSalle College offers courses in both English and French. This program leads to a DEC in Fashion Design. LaSalle works with universities so that students can complete a bachelor's degree in two years after they have completed their DEC.
Cégep Marie-Victorin
Cégep Marie-Victorin offers a three-year program in French only to students leading to a DEC. The school boasts a new fashion design facility that was created to look like the work environment in a house of fashion. Cégep also offers a two-year fur design option, and each year nine students are sent on a study internship to the SAGA International Design Centre in Denmark.
The Academy of Arts and Design
The Academy of Arts and Design has a fashion design program lasting 17 months or longer should students desire to attend part-time. The program includes a two-month internship with a company to apply the skills learned in the classroom. The academy's classes can be taken in either French or English and lead to a DEC.
L'École Supérieure de Mode de Montréal
L'École Supérieure de Mode de Montréal was founded in 1995, thanks to a partnership between the University of Quebec and LaSalle College. The program leads to a B.A. in Fashion Design. According to the school's website, the program is for highly qualified candidates who already hold a DEC and have previous academic work or experience in fashion.

The federal government issues Pell Grants to students who demonstrate need as determined through a standard formula. Students must also have a high school diploma or GED or be able to benefit from a training course. They must be U.S. citizens with good grades and a valid Social Security number and be able to certify funds will only be used for education. The student must certify that she is not in default on any student loans. A male between 18 and 25 years must register with Selective Service.
Most grants are awarded to undergraduates working towards a first degree; however certain post-baccalaureate programs qualify.
Applying for the Pell Grant
The need for the Pell Grant is determined by the U.S. Department of Education using a standard formula, developed by Congress. Applicants may apply via Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA (see Resources).
The formula will calculate an expected family contribution. This number, also known as EFC, will determine eligibility. The higher the EFC, the lower the chances of receiving funds, according to PellGrantInformation.com.
The EFC is the sum of the percentage of net income and the percentage of net assests. Factors used in the calculation of EFC are the student's income and assets if the student is independent, the parents' income and assets if the student is dependent, the family's household size, and the number of family members excluding parents attending postsecondary institutions.
After filing a FAFSA, expect to receive a Student Aid Report, also known as SAR, and the college or institution will receive an Institutional Student Information Record, also known as a ISIR, which will notify the student if he is eligible.
Most Pell Grants are distributed to families with annual incomes of less than $20,000. However, students with annual family incomes of more than $20,000 should still apply because funds are awarded to families with incomes up to $50,000.
Receiving Funds
Funds are distributed in different ways. Some are sent directly to qualifying schools, and others are dispersed by check. Pell Grants are usable at any one of approximately 5,400 participating postsecondary institutions.
The actual amount a qualified student receives is based on the EFC. Students can expect to receive funds up to $5,500.
If you know your EFC number, you can see how much you should expect to receive by referencing Pell Grant Information.com's award schedule chart (see Resources).
For example, if you are in school full time with an EFC between 301-400, you will get $2,190.50. If you are in school part time with the same EFC number, you would get $1,095.50.

Internet access in the classroom contains advantages and disadvantages.
Nearly every classroom in America's schools can access the Internet, a number that grew from 35 percent in 1994, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Some teachers use the Internet with every assignment while others take a different approach. As with any education technique, classroom Internet usage comes with both advantages and disadvantages.
Information
A major advantage of the Internet is the ability to access all types of information from library resources all over the world, including magazines, books, newspapers and journal publications, instantaneously. This information increases the learning potential by providing students with the latest information. It also expands the resources of a smaller library tremendously. Students using search engines can find information quicker and more tailored to their specific needs.
As a disadvantage, educators may consider this information overload. With all of the information available to students, they may find it difficult to choose which information is most important to a topic and also when to stop looking. In addition, the validity of Internet sources varies considerably from website to website, which means students can very easily acquire inaccurate or out-dated information online.
Online Education
An online education provides students with the convenience of going to class and completing assignments on their own timetable. Students can take classes from a college or university nowhere near their home and get an education experience not available to them locally. Students who travel with a job can take a class in a house, hotel room or coffee shop. Students save on housing, gas money and travel expenses.
However, an online education means face-to-face instruction does not exist, nor does the ability to get instant feedback on class assignments in many situations. They also can't hear questions from other students (or ask questions themselves), which often can give clarification to a student struggling with the concepts of the material.
Virtual Field Trips
An advantage of a classroom Internet connection allows students to take a virtual field trip without ever leaving their school building. Students studying the animals of Africa, the Great Wall of China or the Egyptian pyramids, for example, never have to get on a plane. For schools struggling with budgets and for schools in rural locations, going to an online museum or virtual zoo gives them a unique opportunity they might not otherwise have without Internet access.
Disadvantages of this experience mean students can't ask questions of the zookeeper or touch a snake at a zoo. They can't take pictures or create memories with their classmates. For younger children, a field trip can teach them behave in public and respect adults; since virtual field trips don't leave the classroom, they only learn to respect their teacher.
Social Skills
The Internet allows students to meet people from all over the world at the click of a button. Suddenly doing a tenth grade literature project on Irish literature with the help of students in Ireland makes the project more interesting and thus a huge advantage. Artists studying Italian architecture can email experts in Italy about the vast amount of artwork.
While these opportunities provide great details and resources, they also can damage social skills. Students who reply primarily on the Internet for information and interaction don't talk to people in person as much; rather they just email back and forth. This can make it hard to develop listening skills, especially when interviewing someone, or to acquire appropriate social skills for face-to-face interactions.

The term interior design is often confused with interior decoration. Interior design is a field complementary to architecture that involves space planning, designing and selecting materials, lighting and furnishings for all types of commercial and residential interiors. The best interior design schools offer not only a rigorous curriculum, but have a strong industry reputation and business partnerships.
University of Cincinnati
The University of Cincinnati's interior design program addresses interior space planning and experiential space sequences to complete a comprehensive five-year Bachelor of Science. The interior design program at the University of Cincinnati has been recognized in major design trade publications, such as Design Intelligence, as having one of the top programs in the nation.
Parsons The New School for Design in New York, NY
Founded in 1896, Parson's School of Design created one of the first U.S. interior design programs. Students work with a faculty of top professional designers at the school's Greenwich Village location of Manhattan to create comprehensive building space solutions, according to Parsons. The design school's current partnerships include Target, Kiehl's and Samsung.
Pratt Institute
With almost 5,000 students, the Brooklyn-based Pratt Institute is regarded as one of the nation's top design schools by Business Week. Students have the opportunity to study interior design as an integral element of the built environment: shaping space as well as planning and furnishing it with New York City as an inspiring backdrop, according to Pratt. Pratt offers a BFA in Interior Design.

Safe driving is an important part of being responsible enough to be behind the wheel of a car. Going too fast, not wearing a seat belt, following the car in front of you too closely are all signs that a person may not be prepared for driving and surely shows that the person behind the wheel is not driving safely. Safe driving not only keeps the person in the car safe, it keeps passengers safe and other drivers safe as well.
Speeding
The speed limit is there because it has been proven to be as fast as a car should be driven in a designated area to maintain the safety of the driver. It's important as a driver to follow the speed limit wherever you are driving, for the obvious safety issues, but also because driving too fast could cause a person to receive a speeding ticket. Too many tickets and your car insurance goes up and you could run the risk of losing your driver's license.
Keep a Safe Distance
If you are too close and the car in front of you stops suddenly, you run a higher risk of rear ending that car, and you will be to blame for not maintaining a safe distance or controlling your car. A good idea is to follow the "Two Second Rule" with cars in front of you. As you are driving, keep an eye on the car in front of you and as it passes an object, such as a street sign or speed limit sign begin counting "one-one thousand, two-one thousand" and if you pass the same object before you count to two, you are too close to the car in front of you.
Wear Your Seat Belt
It's a proven fact, seat belts save lives. It's extremely important to wear your seat belt each and every time you get behind the wheel of a car, or in a car- even as a passenger. According to statistics, 17,000 people each year could have been saved if they had worn their seat belt during the time of an accident. Make it a habit to put your seat belt on before even starting your car and make it a rule that everyone in your car must have his or her seat belt on at all times.
Don't Drive Distracted
Put your cell phone and IPod away. Avoid putting make-up on, eating and anything that would draw your attention from the road at anytime.Using these items while driving is a major distraction. Not only are your eyes off the road for a time, your hands are doing something other than gripping the steering wheel. Taking your eyes off the road even for a split second can cause you to steer your car into oncoming traffic or cause a fatality.
Make a Full Stop
Stop signs are placed in intersections so traffic can flow in an orderly manner. A full stop needs to occur at every stop you make; even at intersections where you believe there are no other cars around. To begin with, running a stop sign is illegal and you can be ticketed, but it's also dangerous. People who run stop signs often just slow down by breaking lightly, and then proceed through the stop. A full stop is one where the breaks are pressed completely, the car comes to a rest and the person in the car has looked all ways for traffic and made sure it is their turn to proceed through the stop sign safely.

Knowing the shapes of road signs can save your life. Although they appear in the driver's manual, most people memorize them for the written test and promptly forget them. You may want to brush up on them, because they can be extremely important to driving safety.
Instructions
1. Understand the road sign shapes. Shape often indicates a sign's function. For example, the circle is used exclusively for railroad warning signs and the octagon for the stop sign.
2. When you're near tracks, look for the cross buck that indicates a train crossing sign. An equilateral triangle that points down indicates a yield signs and the pennant is for no-passing signs.
3. Learn the other road sign shapes. The pentagon is used for school advance warning signs and county route marker signs. The diamond is for warning signs. A long vertical rectangle indicates regulatory signs. A long horizontal rectangle is for guide signs, some warning signs and temporary traffic control signs. Note that the trapezoid is used for recreational area guide signs and National Forest route markers. There are other shapes that are typically used for route marker signs.
4. Commit the shapes to memory. Teach your children the shapes of the road signs so that they won't have a hard time remembering when they are learning to drive. It will also help you remember the road sign shapes.
Many bilingual job applicants have an edge over their competition.
Many people are interested in learning a foreign language at some point in their lives, and many high school and college students must take foreign language classes. Spanish is one of the most popular options when people choose a second language, since it offers many professional and cultural benefits.
Career Opportunities
The largest minority group in the United States is the Hispanic population, and the number of Spanish speakers is growing each year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This means that U.S. companies are looking for ways to attract and gain Spanish-speakers' business, and this often helps determine their hiring practices. According to CareerBuilder, corporate America recognizes the need for bilingual staff and has made efforts to recruit, hire and retain bilingual Spanish-speaking employees. Many jobs require Spanish speaking and writing skills, and people who learn Spanish have an advantage over their competitors. Several industries need bilingual personnel, such as healthcare organizations, banks, retail stores, social services, schools, consumer credit agencies and financial services.
Pay Increases
Bilingual employees give their companies the option to target the Hispanic market, and in return, they often make more money than their non-Spanish speaking counterparts. According to an article in the "North County Times," bilingual Spanish employees are able to snag promotions and gain pay raises by simply being able to speak Spanish. Many Latino customers who do not speak English very well feel more comfortable buying products and services from salespeople who speak their native tongue.
Travel Opportunities
Unlike other popular foreign language offerings, such as French or German, Spanish is spoken all over the world. It is spoken in Europe, North America, Central America and South America. Many of the Spanish-speaking locations, such as Spain and Mexico, are popular tourist destinations for Americans. Travelers and tourists may have an easier time getting around and bargaining for the lowest market prices if they speak the local language.
Gateway to Other Languages
Spanish is a Latin-based romance language, and has the same roots as several other languages, including Italian, Portuguese and French. Once you master one of the Latin languages, the others are much easier to learn. Americans who are interested in becoming multilingual can benefit from learning Spanish first, because it is widely spoken throughout America, which means it is easier to practice via hearing, speaking and reading than other Latin languages.

If you can prove a diploma is false, you are less likely to be scammed.
A high school diploma is an important document, because it serves as the minimum requirement for many colleges and jobs. However, with so many different types of schools, including home schools, it can be difficult to know if a high school diploma is real or fake. Sometimes, fake diplomas are so convincing that the only way to verify them is to contact the agency that issued them. Other times, there are ways that you can tell whether a diploma is real or fake.
Instructions
1. Look for the issuing school district. Even a home-schooled student must take his exams through a particular school district, because home schools themselves are not accredited. Find the school district and make sure it is a real, by looking in a phone book, or online, or by simply asking around.
2. Contact the school district that issued the diploma. Often this is the only way to tell whether one has been faked, because there are so many schools and each has its own type of diploma. Also, there are many businesses that create fake diplomas which look realistic, so you should verify with the district that a student actually graduated.
3. Check the diploma for an accreditation agency. Every school that issues diplomas is accredited, which means that an accreditation agency has certified that the school teaches what it is supposed to teach. Even home-schooled students must pass tests set forth by an accredited agency in order to get a diploma for graduation in their state. Contact the accredited agency to double-check that the diploma is real.

The preschool years are full of learning and exploration. Your child will begin to learn the alphabet and numbers during this period. It is important to stay patient while teaching so that he does not get frustrated during the learning process, according to Kathleen Stassen Berger, author of "The Developing Person: Through the Life Span." Playing games, using flashcards and supplementing with educational programing can all aid in numeral recognition.
Instructions
1. Purchase or create large numeral cutouts and flashcards. You can purchase such supplies at a teacher's supply store or online at TeacherStoreHouse.com. Hang the numbers around the classroom, playroom or child's bedroom in order to keep them in sight. You will use the number flashcards for learning activities.
2. Assign a specific number each day and focus on mastering that specific number for the entire day. For example, if today's number is 1, base games and activities around the number 1. Also encourage your child to practice writing the number of the day.
3. Review numbers learned on previous days. Although it might be a "number 4 day," dedicate a few minutes each day to briefly reviewing previously learned numbers. Reviewing numbers will aid your child by keeping the knowledge readily available and furthering her ability to retain the information.
4. Allow your child to watch clips of "Sesame Street." "Sesame Street" chooses a number to focus on during each episode. The number is used as a theme throughout the show, which features short skits and songs about the number.
Transferring is a great way to get into an Ivy League school. Many students who didn't have the grades or test scores to get into the Ivy League right out of high school find that an academically successful first year of college gives them a solid shot of attaining their college admission goals. If you are thinking about transferring to an Ivy League school, follow these steps.
Instructions
1. Make your current academic year count. No matter how well or poorly you did in high school, the most important thing in transferring to an Ivy League school is showing dramatic academic improvement on a college level. It's important not to get despondent or disillusioned by your current college but instead take advantage of the opportunity to show academic excellence.
2. Select your Ivy. The Ivy League was originally an athletic conference that only later came to be associated with academic prestige. That said, it's important to note that the schools differ radically in everything from academic rigor to social life and admissions policies. Take a careful look at all the Ivy League schools and select the schools that seem right for you.
3. Focus on your essay. In many schools, the admissions officers who read application essays are able to devote more time to reading transfer candidate essays. Also, you need to explain why you want to transfer to a particular Ivy League school and talk about your academic and social qualities that make you an excellent student.
4. Visit the schools you are considering. Contrary to popular myth, an Ivy League degree is not a gold ticket to a successful career or even an excellent college experience. It's important for you to visit each school you're serious about so that you can get a real impression of the school and not rely on the Ivy League aura to make an important decision.

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) consists of five main testing subjects that combine for a total of 298 questions. The five areas of the HSPT are verbal, quantitative, mathematics, reading and language skills. When preparing for the test, be sure to study all five subjects because you must receive an "Advanced Proficient" or "Proficient" score in each of these areas in order to pass the HSPT. Read on to learn pass the HSPT.
Instructions
1. Obtain a list of the main testing subjects and a list of the individual topics in each of the five main test areas.
2. Start studying the main subjects. Begin with your weakest subjects first. When you are comfortable with your knowledge level in those, move on to your stronger subjects.
3. Find your weakest topics in each main subject. If you find that in verbal, you are strong in synonyms and antonyms but not in logic and verbal classifications, make a note.
4. Prepare a list of all your individual topic weaknesses.
5. Study the individual topics. Spend extra time studying the specific topics until you obtain a comfortable level of knowledge in all topics.
6. Quiz yourself. When you feel comfortable with your knowledge level in all five areas, give yourself a quick quiz to double-check for weak areas.
7. Take a practice exam. Many HSPT practice exams are offered on the Internet.
8. Go over the questions you answered incorrectly. Go back to your study materials and study the topic again.
9. Get a good night's sleep. Testing is stressful so be sure to get plenty of rest the night before.

Deciding to take up the Project Management Professional exam is one of the easiest things to do -- it's the subsequent preparation that's tough. There's so much to learn and memorize that it seems you'll never feel prepared enough to actually walk into the Prometric center for the test. Preparation is not just about mastering the Project Management Book of Knowledge on which the PMP is based, it's also about application of thought. Using the right technique can help you gain confidence and ensure you pass the PMP exam on the first try.
Instructions
1. Have a vision. Consider the PMP as you will a project. Prepare a plan of action. Set a deadline for when you're going to take up the exam. Ignite yourself with the desire to clear on the first try. Read success stories of people who've cleared at the first attempt. Get yourself into exam preparation mode.
2. Find out exam details. Search for information about the pattern of the exam, the books recommended and the areas that people consider challenging. Don't lose heart when you find there's so much syllabus to cover. Remember, it's not possible to cover every single thing -- what you need to do is focus on key areas.
3. Enroll for a course. Anyone taking up the PMP is required to take up a minimum 35 contact hours of project management training. Select a training course, preferably one that is PMBOK based. This will help you get familiar with PMI lingo that will figure prominently in the PMP exam. The middle of an exam is the last place to be trying to comprehend what exactly a given term means. Make sure your course provides you with many opportunities for taking up mock tests to help you gauge your preparedness.
4. Focus on application, not memory. Although the PMP has questions about inputs and outputs for PMBOK processes, their proportion is not very large. So don't gear your preparation towards memorizing those formulae. Rather, concentrate on learning to discriminate the formula a given situation warrants. Pay attention to getting your basics right -- this teamed with the hands-on project management experience of your job will help you crack the PMP.
5. Take up mock tests. As you continue studying, take up mock tests. This will help you evaluate the areas where you need greater preparation. Revise those portions where you score less.

Turn your B paper into an A+ by taking the time to properly edit it.
After hours upon hours of research and pouring your time and energy into writing your research paper, you may be ready to call it quits and turn it in just to be done with it. Stop right there! Before you head to campus, make sure you take the time to sit down and fully edit your paper. Taking the time to edit, and edit correctly, can turn a B paper into an A; and after working so hard, you wouldn't want to let something as silly as a few spelling errors prevent you from obtaining the grade you deserve.
Instructions
1. Set your paper aside for at least 24 hours before editing. This will give you just enough space from your work that you can read it with a clear head.
2. Run spell and grammar checks on your paper through your word processor.
3. Read your paper through once, making note of any spelling or grammatical errors your word processor may have missed. Be sure that you do not rely on your word processor to catch every error for you -- it is not foolproof.
4. Check the style of the paper. Make sure that your paper is written in the specified format (typically AP or MLA) and that your have correctly cited your sources. If your paper is supposed to be informative, make sure it does its job of providing readers with facts. Likewise, if it is supposed to be persuasive, ensure it persuades the reader to consider the point-of-view offered in the paper.
5. Check presentation. Make sure you have properly indented and spaced your paper, including your title and works cited pages.
6. Read through your paper once more -- out loud. Hearing the flow of your sentences spoken aloud will bring any grammatical mistakes to your attention that you may have previously missed.

Surgeons may recieve certification through the American Board of Surgery.
Certification for general surgery is offered through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). A qualifying test and a certifying test must be taken to receive final certification. Before you can apply to take any of these tests, however, you must have successfully completed both a baccalaureate program and a medical degree to qualify you for a medical license, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Qualifying Exam
Your first step in becoming certified through ABS is the Qualifying Examination. As of May 2010, it lasts for eight hours and has about 300 questions that cover basic surgical principles. There are several requirements you must meet to be eligible for the test. These eligibility criteria transfer to the qualifications for the general surgery certifying exam. First, you must have a medical license and have completed five years of residency. You also need at least 54 months of experience in surgery and you must be certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS).
General Surgery Certifying Examination
After completing the qualifying examination, you are eligible to take the General Surgery Certifying Examination, which is the last step toward certification. There are three portions of the test, each of which lasts 30 minutes. Each part of the test typically covers four surgical cases. This test is an oral one that primarily tests your ability to make good surgical decisions as you discuss general surgery topics with two examiners.
Recertification
You must maintain your general surgery certification through what ABS calls the Maintenance of Certification (MOC). This process, which is on a three-year cycle, consists of four parts (as of May 2010). The first is your continued professional standing. You must maintain your medical license and you also have to minimally complete 50 continuing education hours and take a cognitive performance test. The last part of the MOC process is an evaluation of your professional record, according to ABS.
Fees
Applying and maintain your general surgery certification has several costs, according to ABS. If you choose to do In-Training (ABSITE), the first fee you incur is a $65 examination fee. The qualifying exam has a $300 application fee and a $700 examination fee. The certifying test only has an examination fee of $900. There are also fees for re-certification. Its application fee is $200 and its examination fee is $900. Late application fees range from $400 to $1,600.
Salary Potential
Once you have obtained your general surgery certification through ABS, you are off to a good salary potential. Those with one to four years of experience have a median salary of $229,000, as of May 2010. The median salary for those with five to nine years of experience is $269,400, and those with 10 to 19 years of experience have a median salary of $272,700, according to PayScale.com.

Fulbright scholarships provide grants for students who wish to promote international understanding.
Actor John Lithgow, author Joseph Heller and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords are all alumni of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship Program. The Fulbright Program is a merit-based, competitive grant program for international exchange students, teachers and others. Started in 1946 by United States Senator J. William Fulbright, the Fulbright Scholarship has been awarded to thousands worldwide since its inception. The application process begins 15 months before the grant is awarded.
Funding of the Fulbright Program
Most of the funding for the Fulbright Program is made through a yearly appropriation by Congress to the Department of State. Additional funding is received from participating foreign governments. Host institutions, along with foundations and corporations in the U.S. and abroad, provide support for the Fulbright Program.
How the Fulbright Program Works
The Fulbright Program is an international exchange program designed to encourage understanding between residents of the United States and the people of other countries. Recipients are selected for their academic record and leadership potential, and they are awarded grants to study abroad. Over 300,000 Fulbright scholars have participated in the program to teach, conduct research, study and assist in providing solutions to shared concerns. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U. S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and priorities for the exchanges are set by the U.S. in conjunction with foreign governments.
Fulbright Scholars
Fulbright scholars are very diverse. They come from big cities and small towns, and they may be recent college graduates or established professionals. They are of varied socioeconomic backgrounds, and they represent diverse religions, ethnicities and races. What makes them candidates for the Fulbright Program is their outstanding academic record, leadership skills, flexibility and interest in pursuing a path that will increase mutual understanding among different countries worldwide.
Fulbright Grants
Approximately 8,000 grants are awarded annually through the Fulbright Program, including 1,600 to students in the U.S. The remaining awards go to foreign students, U.S. scholars and visiting scholars, along with teachers and professionals. Worldwide, there are more than 155 countries that participate in the program. Most of the Fulbright grants are fully funded and provide money for transportation to and from the host country, tuition, and insurance coverage. Orientation and enrichment events are provided free of charge.
Fulbright Program Components
The Fulbright Program offers grants such as the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which gives fellowships to graduating college seniors to study abroad for a year. Young professionals and artists are also eligible. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award provides a grant to foreign students studying technology in an American school. The Fulbright-Hays Program awards teachers, doctoral students and organizations grants to support research and training in non-Western foreign languages and area studies. The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program grants awards to foreign English teachers to enhance their skills and knowledge of American culture.

A master's degree in law enforcement can open many doors.
While most careers in law enforcement require only an associate or bachelor's degree, that extra something on the resume can make a big difference when it comes to getting a higher-paying job. Whether in the private or public sectors, a master's degree in a field of law enforcement can mean better opportunities, quicker promotions and higher salaries.
Criminal Justice
Criminal justice degrees are probably the most common post graduate programs for people looking for a career in law enforcement. Those with a master's degree in this field are found in police agencies, the FBI, and sheriff's departments around the country. The degree program offers a core education in criminal justice research methods and theory, with many schools allowing students a choice of electives to fill out their studies.
Law Enforcement Intelligence
For those seeking to work in homeland security and other counter-terrorism agencies, a law enforcement intelligence master's degree is very helpful. This course teaches the student work with government intelligence operations, liaison with local law enforcement, and gives specialized training in combating terrorism.
Forensic Science
Those who wish to move into a forensic science advanced degree will typically have some form of natural science undergraduate major. From there, students will be taught apply their knowledge when it comes to the analysis of crime scene evidence. In many degree programs, students choose from one of three programs including biology, anthropology and chemistry.
Law Enforcement Administration
This degree prepares the student to apply theories of criminal justice to the everyday administration of a law enforcement body. This means training in management, with an emphasis on what it takes to direct a sheriff's office or police station.
Law
Many people think of law degrees as something only necessary if training to become an attorney, but that isn't always the case. A master's degree in law can lead to careers in a variety of fields, including law enforcement.
Electricity is everywhere in the modern world. Almost everything in our homes and offices use it, and it's important for kids to understand how it works. The best way to teach them is through at-home electrical projects that explain the concepts. Introductory projects don't require a complex kit and don't need to be expensive. In fact, you can teach a child a lot about electricity for less than $20.
Motor
For this project, you'll need one small motor (3-volts), a 2 AA battery holder and 2 1.5-volt AA batteries. You can use 1.2-volt batteries instead, but the motor will spin more slowly. Connect the wires of the battery holder to the wires of the motor. You can just twist the exposed portion together, but make sure you match the colors. Put the batteries in the holder.
Use this project to explain to the child basic electrical concepts like voltage and current. The motor is a 3 volt DC motor. Each AA battery is 1.5 volts (or 1.2 volts). Ask him what he thinks would happen if you removed a battery (too little voltage) or added another (too much voltage).
Buzzer Switch
For this project, you'll need one small piezo siren (3 volts), one normally closed switch (12VDC maximum), a 2 AA battery holder and 2 AA batteries. Connect the black wire from the battery holder to the "power" terminal on the switch, and the black wire from the buzzer to the "ground" terminal on the switch. Connect the red wires from the battery holder and buzzer. Insert the batteries. When you press the button on the switch, the siren should blare.
Ask the child to explain how it works. Make sure she discusses how the switch stops the flow of the electricity to the buzzer. Explain the voltage tolerance of the switch (up to 12 volts). What does she think would happen if more than 12 volts went through the switch?
LED Throwies
These are probably the most fun project for kids, as it involves making something shiny that you can throw. You'll need a 10mm LED of any color, a 2032 button-cell battery and a small rare-earth magnet (if you want the throwie to stick to metal). Touch the long LED lead to the positive side of the battery and the short lead to the negative side. The LED should light up. Wrap some clear tape around the battery to hold it in place. If you're using a magnet, tape it to the positive side of the battery.
If you completed the first two projects with your child, there's very little learning here. You might discuss how LEDs work or what would happen if you reversed the leads of the LED (it would short). A better idea is to let your aspiring electrical engineer make a handful of these and toss them from a high-up location in the dark. If he does it while his friends are around, you can rest assured that they too will become interested in electronics.

School clerks must be able to work well with teachers and students.
School clerks typically work in the front offices of educational institutions, such as elementary and high schools. They are responsible for a wide variety of duties, including answering the phones and providing administrative support to the principal. School clerks also interact with teachers, students, parents and administrators. If you are interested in this type of career, be prepared for typical interview questions.
School Questions
School clerks are often the first person new students and parents come into contact with, and they need to represent the school and district well. Therefore, many school clerk interview questions are about a candidate's knowledge on these topics. According to the Principal's Pal website, a common question is, "Why will our school be better by hiring you?" This allows the interviewee to demonstrate her knowledge of the school and apply her individual experience in her answer. For example, a good answer may be, "I know the school is one of the best in the state for its bilingual program, and I fluently speak Spanish. I would have no problems communicating with native Spanish-speaking parents and students."
Principal Questions
Many school clerks report directly to the school principal, as well as provide him administrative support. Some interview questions are focused on this potential work relationship and personality match. For example, one question may be, "How would you describe a successful principal?" The interviewer is typically looking for an answer that will demonstrate that the interviewee's philosophy on the principal's role fits with the actual person in the position. For a school clerk position, an appropriate answer to this interview question may be, "For me, a successful principal is someone who can lead a diverse team of individuals, and motivate them to reach overall district goals. I think a principal should care about the teachers, students and parents equally."
Attitude and Demeanor Questions
Most school clerks will be faced with challenging situations in the school's front office. She may have to deal with angry parents, frustrated or belligerent students and crisis situations. When the school has an emergency, she is often the one who must field the calls from worried parents and stay calm in hectic situations. Some common attitude and overall demeanor questions may include, "What do you do to handle frustrating situations?" and "Tell me about a situation where you had three things to do at once. How did you prioritize and handle things?" The best answers for these types of question are basically giving an example of how you handled a past emergency in a calm, collected manner. Emphasize how the situation was quickly remedied and how all parties left it feeling satisfied.
Skill Set Questions
Most school clerks need to have proficient telephone, computer and writing skills. Skill set interview questions may include, "What is the most complicated thing you've done on Excel?" or "Tell me about your experience with presentation software." Other questions may include, "Tell me about how you've handled confidential information in the past." For these questions, just give real-life, honest examples that prove you have competence in these areas.

Every year in the U.S. about one-third of older adults fall, an accident that can be devastating in a variety of ways. Falls can result in serious injuries and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that costs associated with falls total about $19 billion a year. An effective fall prevention plan reduces the risk through exercise, medication management, education, vision screening and by creating a safer living environment.
Fall Prevention
A patient care plan for fall prevention works to reduce falls and helps people live longer and healthier. The first step is to determine what's really needed and then set some goals. Figure out what the most important risks are, such as vision problems or physical weakness. Then, a strong fall prevention plan should provide education about the risks of falling. It should also include exercises focused on both strengthening and balance.
A plan for fall prevention can tap into the expertise offered by a variety of individuals to include not only a doctor, but also an optometrist, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker and exercise instructor. A medication review should be performed by a health-care professional, a vision assessment can be made by an optometrist, and a social worker or occupational therapist can assess home safety.
The plan should outline where and when activities will occur. It can include some activities at home, the hospital or a physical therapy facility. For instance, a medication review can be done in the hospital or at the patient's home. But a proper vision screening must be performed at the optometrist's office.
A careful review of medications is a vital part of a care plan to prevent falls. In a study of residents at three nursing homes, researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that medication changes have a huge impact on falling risks. They found that after a medication change occurred, the risk of falls was three times higher in the days just following the change.
It's not enough to tell a patient to get more exercise to become stronger. A care plan should include specific recommendations on what to do. For example, one popular form of exercise for older adults is tai chi. A study at Oregon Research Institute found that this form of exercise can specifically help to decrease falls by improving balance. A 12-week program emerged called Moving for Better Balance.
Finally, it's key for a professional, such as an occupational therapist, to assess a patient's environment for safety. Besides spotting needed modifications, such as loose carpets and slippery bathrooms, these professionals can suggest assistive and mobility devices as needed.
From education to environmental assessments, the CDC reports that all of these efforts combined in a care plan are proven to prevent falls.
