When most people think of a speech-language pathologist (SLP), they think of a person working in a school, teaching children say "rabbit" rather than "wabbit." But speech-language pathologists also work in the medical setting and play a vital role in any hospital.

Misconceptions

It's a common misconception that speech-language pathologists help only with speaking, and specifically pronunciation. In fact, in the medical setting, one of the most important jobs of an SLP is to work with patients who have difficulty swallowing. Many times, elderly patients lose muscle strength in their throats, making it difficult for them to swallow food or liquid without it going down their windpipes and into the lungs, which can cause aspiration and pneumonia. The SLP performs swallowing tests on the patient, which lets doctors and nurses know what type of food is appropriate for the patient. While a patient with normal throat strength can handle solid food, some patients may need to be restricted to viscous liquids like pudding, to liquids only or to only IV fluids.

Function

Other functions of the SLP in a medical setting include rehabilitation work with patients who have suffered strokes. A stroke can often leave the speaking functions of a person impaired, and an SLP can help improve speech, or at least help the person adjust to her impaired speaking function. Patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries in serious accidents may also need therapy to help with their speaking functions.

SLPs also still see the occasional child with a language or articulation problem. In addition to services through the schools, some medical plans allow for private speech work that can be done at a hospital or through a private practice.

Considerations

Becoming an SLP in the medical setting requires a degree in speech-language pathology, as well as a master's degree in speech-language pathology. This means it requires a minimum of 6 years of schooling to become an SLP. A master's degree program will usually require at least one unpaid internship for a semester. Most schools require both a hospital and school internship to graduate from their graduate programs, though some schools now offer programs specifically for the medical setting. SLPs must also undergo the American Speech and Hearing Association (AHSA) certification process to be licensed to work as SLPs in a hospital setting.

The pay for working as a medical SLP varies greatly depending on location and type of hospital. Generally, SLPs who work in the medical field tend to make a little more than SLPs who work in a school setting, though a little less than SLPs with a successful private practice. A general starting salary for an SLP who works in a medical setting is between $35,000 and $50,000.

The hours for a speech-language pathologist in a hospital are quite reasonable. Most work a normal workday from 9 to 5. Most hospitals also keep at least one SLP "on call" should any emergency situations come up during off-hours. This is one way for SLPs to earn a little extra money.

3. Associate part of the name with a concept. Once when I was touring some caverns, the guide explained the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite: A stalactite hangs "tight" to the ceiling while a stalagmite "might" reach the ceiling someday.

4. Use the first letters to make a memorable phrase. For example, all biology students remembers that King Philip Came Over For Good Sex. That's how they remember the classification system of all species: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

5. Use the first letters to make an acronym: KISS stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid.

6. If you have trouble remembering the names of folks at a social gathering, repeat the person's name after they've been introduced to you. Take an extra second to look at the person's face and associate it with their name. Most folks breeze through the introductions so quickly that the name never gets a chance to get a foothold in your memory.

You can practice this every time you eat out. The person who waits on you will usually introduce themselves. Repeat their name to yourself immediately and try to look at their name tag if they're wearing one.

If you're eating with someone else you can quiz them on the name - you'll be amazed how few people remember it even after a few seconds.

7. If you're trying to remember something and it's not coming to you, try visualization.

For example, if you're trying to recall the author of a book, visualize the front cover of the book. See the title there and then look at the author's name on the cover.

This won't work for everyone but it works well for some folks.

8. Play memory games. These will help keep your mind active and make your memory sharper.

Geography

Dutch settlers established themselves on the southwest coast of South Africa, along the Atlantic Ocean, in what is today Cape Town. The settlements were rest stops for ships heading into the Cape of Good Hope.

Time Frame

The Portuguese began sailing around the tip of Africa in the late 15th century, but Dutch settlers did not colonize the land for another 150 years, in the mid-17th century.

History

The first Europeans to live in southern Africa were shipwrecked Dutch sailors. They lived for a year among the Khoi, from 1647 to 1648, developing trade relations for the Dutch East India Company.

Settlement

Five years later, on April 6, 1652, Jan van Riebeeck, under orders from the Dutch East India Company, established the first colony at Table Bay. The settlers built Fort Duijinhoop, which was replaced by the much more formidable Cape Town Castle in 1666.

Significance

The British captured Cape Town in 1795, simultaneously keeping it out of French hands and securing passage to their colonies in India and Australia. White settlement of South Africa led to apartheid. Cape Town is the second biggest city in South Africa.

When the concentration of an acidic or base in unknown, a titration can be carried out to determine the concentration. For unknown acidic solutions whose concentration is unknown, a base whose concentration is known is slowly added from a buret until it is neutralized. For unknown basic solutions, an acid is added. An indicator, such as one that will turn a light pink when equilibrium is reached, alerts you to the completion of the titration.

Instructions

Carry Out a Titration

1. Set up the experiment by putting the unknown solution into the beaker and the known solution goes in the buret.

2. Record the volumes of both solutions and then add the indicator to the beaker.

3. Slowly drip the known solution from the buret into the beaker. When the indicator turns the appropriate color, often a light shade of pink, stop because the titration is complete.

4. After the reaction is complete, subtract the amount of solution left in the buret from the amount that was originally put in to find out how much solution has been added.

5. Multiply the volume of the solution added times its concentration. Then divided this number by the original volume of the unknown solution. That number will be the concentration of the unknown solution. For example, if you added 5ml of 0.8 M solution to 4ml of the unknown solution, you would multiply five times 0.8 and divide by four. The result, 1.0, would be the concentration.

Changing fractions into percentages is like riding a bike: Once you learn do it, you'll remember it forever. There are a few quick tips to learn to help you make your conversion. Once you catch on to those, you can really master the conversion skill.

Instructions

1. Know what a fraction is. A fraction is an expression of a number. It has a numerator (the number on top) and a denominator (the number on the bottom). They are not by themselves percentages, but they can easily be converted into one with some simple mathematical skills.

2. Multiply the fraction by 100 to get the percentage. For example, take the fraction 1/2. Multiply 1/2 by 100/1 and it equals 100/2. Divide 100 by 2 and it equals 50. The percentage that is equal to 1/2 is 50 percent.

3. Find the lowest common denominator. Sometimes you will know the percentage of a fraction but you will not recognize it. For example, what percentage makes up the fractions 45/60, 96/768 and 140/560? They are the same as 3/4, 1/8 and 1/4: it's just harder to see at first glance. To find the lowest common denominator, divide each number in the fraction by the same number. Using the 45/60 example, you can see that both numbers can be divided by 15. This reduces the fraction to 3/4 or 0.75, which equals 75 percent.

4. Cross-multiply the fractions. If you have a difficult fraction like 9/16, write down x/100 right next to it on a piece of paper and cross-multiply (the x is for the percentage that you are trying to find). So multiply 9 times 100 and x times 16). You now have an equation that looks like 16x = 900. Divide both sides by 16 to get the equation x = 900/16. Get out the calculator and you will find that the answer is 56.26 percent.

Early Years Education Schema

There are many different theories and concepts that idealize the behavior and development of children. The notion of schemas, as they relate to early childhood development, originated with psychologist Jean Piaget. Piaget's theories on cognitive development are recognized as cornerstones in the field of psychiatry.

History

During the early 1900s, most scholars believed that the minds of children were just miniature replicas of the adult mind and therefore utilized the same thought processes. Piaget disagreed with this notion and sought to examine the developmental processes of the minds of children while creating child intelligence tests in 1920.

Definition

Schemas are concepts built in the mind based on conclusions drawn from our experiences. As they relate to the complexity of the mind, schemas are the basic level. A good example of an early childhood schema is how children learn about gravity and distance. Children usually acquire this information by repeatedly tossing objects onto the floor from their cribs or high chairs. They later use this schema to assist them when taking their first steps. Piaget called these processes assimilation and accommodation.

Assimulation

According to Piaget's theory, assimilation refers to an interpretation of a new experience. Bhattacharya and Han of the University of Georgia cite the example of a child who sees her baby picture for the first time. When first seeing the picture, a child may only recognize that picture as a baby, but when that child is told that she is the baby, the child incorporates this information and begins to recognize the picture as her baby picture.

Accomodation

Accommodation refers to the adjustment of information previously stored to meet the particulars of new and different situations. Referring again to the example presented by Bhattacharya and Han, the child begins to understand that pictures must capture moments of the past, because she can't be at two places at one time.

In another exercise, you may be given a series of questions in which you answer with pre-assigned values, thus weighting your answer. For instance, you may be asked if you straighten the pictures at someone else's house. If you do this most of the time, you would score a 10. If sometimes, you'd score a 5. And if you never do this, then you would score 0.

Some exercises are designed to provide you with insight into yourself. These exercises have a series of yes/no questions that are intended to get you thinking about those things that you answered with a yes. The questions may be focused on one area of your life, such as how work is integrated into your life.

Other exercises have you produce lists. For instance, it may have you list the things you have to do tomorrow. Or list every thought that comes to mind. The exercise is intended to make you aware of your thought processes and note how they may be causing a snowball effect of stress. The aim is to help you deal with this before it builds up. Lists may also be used to help you see things around you, such as the compassionate acts of others.

Besides yes/no questions there are true/false statements to evaluate. One such exercise is designed to help develop patience, especially in dealing with others. It points out behaviors such as interrupting, rushing others and finishing their sentences.
