Make Sentences Using My Vocabulary Words

Before writing a sentence, have the student look up the definition of the word to be sure he knows what it means.


Having your students use their vocabulary words in sentences is a creative activity that helps the students both learn and retain the definition of each word, while illustrating their understanding of the word's meaning. This activity can have an added benefit of stimulating a student's interest in language. You can provide the instructions below as part of your vocabulary lesson plans. When helping students create sentences, make sure they are using proper grammatical structure and encourage clear and concise writing.


Instructions


1. Look the vocabulary word up in a dictionary. Read the definition of the word, the part of speech and review the examples of the word as it is used in a sentence. Seeing the word used in a sentence will help you understand the meaning of the word beyond the definition. It will also help you understand the connotation of the word. Connotation is a set of attributes that form the meaning of a term--these are often formed over time. It also defines the range of objects to which a term can apply.


2. Write a sentence that proves that you understand the definition of the word, while following correct grammatical structure. Use the word clearly and in correct context. For example, using the word "happy," you could write the following sentence: "I could tell that she was happy with the gift by the big smile on her face when she opened it." This sentence demonstrates the definition of happy as to be delighted, pleased or glad over a particular thing.








3. Write a sentence that demonstrates multiple parts of speech usage. If your vocabulary word is "exchange," for example, you could write the following sentence: "The salesperson allowed her to exchange the yellow top for the pink top, because the exchange was in alignment with store policy." This sentence allows the reader to infer that to exchange something means to change one thing for another. In this sentence, exchange is used as both a verb and a noun.








4. Write a sentence that demonstrates multiple meanings of a word. If your vocabulary word is "fair" for example, you could make the following sentence: "It is not fair that I have to stay inside on such a fair day." The first usage of fair means a situation that is free from injustice. The second usage of fair means fine or clear weather.

The Junior Statesmen Summer School


The Junior Statesmen Summer School offers high school students the opportunity to undertake advanced classes in political science at three of the country's most prestigious universities: Princeton, Georgetown and Stanford. Calculate The Chances Of College Acceptance

Waiting for an admission decision from a college or university can be nerve-wracking, especially at Ivy League schools and institutions with selective admission rates. Many schools employ a broad-based criteria for admission that gives equal weight to an applicant's academic record, test scores, personal statement and extracurricular activities. If you're a prospective applicant or are waiting for an admission decision, there are some simple ways to calculate your chances of acceptance.


Instructions


1. Visit the websites of the schools where you've applied to find out what they look for in evaluating applicants. Check to see if extracurricular activities and your personal statement are weighed more heavily than academic record and test scores. Some schools may not even require test scores.


2. Research the freshman acceptance rates of the institutions that interest you. Understand what the figures mean. For example, a 15 percent acceptance rate means 85 percent of the people who apply will be rejected. Write down the acceptance rate.


3. Find out the average GPA and SAT/ATC scores, and the average high school class rank (top 10 percent, top 15 percent) for the last freshman class to be admitted to the schools where you've applied. Write down those statistics.


4. Compile a list of your GPA, SAT and ATC scores, your ranking in your high school class, the kind of classes you've taken in high school (AP, honors) and extracurricular activities. Write these figures down.


5. Compare the freshman admission rate statistics from each school to your own statistics to calculate your approximate chance of admission. For example, if the freshmen admission figures for New York University are 3.5 GPA, 15 percent acceptance rate, top 10 percent high school class ranking, 1100 SAT score, and your numbers are 3.8 GPA, top 5 percent high school ranking, 1200 SAT, you could make an educated guess that you stand a good chance of gaining admission. Though this isn't an exact science, comparing your figures with the averages of the last incoming class can give you a rough idea where you stand.

Cons Of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells may revolutionize transportation but aren't perfect.


Hydrogen fuel could potentially reduce or eliminate dependence on oil as the fuel for transportation. Hydrogen fuel cells are sourced from hydrogen obtained from the earth's atmosphere. Hydrogen fuel cells are clean fuel, as the only emission they produce are steam vapor. Despite the enormous potential this fuel has for changing the way mankind may drive in the future, hydrogen cells have some systemic problems. As a result of these problems, the concept of hydrogen fuel cells as a form of transportation fuel is a theoretical concept only, as of 2010.


Cost


The greatest constraint to obtaining hydrogen fuel cells is the astronomical cost. Although hydrogen is available in great abundance, harnessing it into a usable form is extremely difficult and thus very expensive. Harnessing hydrogen fuel power and processing it for use in vehicles involves the use of technology that is still so new, its implementation could cost trillions of dollars.


Technology and Pollution








While the emission from a car that runs on hydrogen fuel is almost zero; producing hydrogen fuel cells in plants for eventual use causes the release of excessively high amounts of carbon dioxide. This almost neutralizes the cleanliness of the fuel in terms of final emission from a vehicle.


Storage








When hydrogen fuel cells are processed, they must be made available as gas that goes into separate tanks in vehicles. It is not possible to just fill up the gas tank as you do with diesel or gasoline. The fuel is stored in tanks that are fitted on the sides of vehicles, which is unsightly and causes te tank to be prone to explosion. Furthermore, there is no perfect way to insulate the tanks, resulting in loss of hydrogen from the fuel cells at a rate of close to two percent a day.

Association for Women in Architecture Scholarships


Available to women who study architecture at any California college, the American Women in Architecture Scholarships were founded to broaden the diversity of students in architecture schools and architectural firms. You can find out the verdict in a court case with some simple research.


You can obtain facts in court cases, including the verdict and sentencing, because cases become a permanent part of the court record. All law students study court cases in detail, and there is no reason why any other citizen can't get the same facts and details. Just follow a few simple procedures, and you can learn about a case.


Instructions


1. Determine whether the case was a federal or state case. The distinction becomes clear if you read the guidelines on the Federal Defense website.


2. Determine if the case was a county or city case, if you find that it was not a state or federal case. You can get this information from the state courthouse clerk, who will direct you to county or city court directories. All states list courts online, and you can find these by entering "Find county and city courthouses in (name of state)."


3. Find the court where the case was filed. This may require some guesswork on your part; but, as a rule of thumb, you will find the locale where the offense or dispute took place determines which court had jurisdiction.








4. Contact the court clerk with particulars of the case you want to know about. In most cases, the clerk can help you. In cases involving minors, you may not obtain information, because such cases are closed to protect the child.

Prepare For A Bat Or Bar Mitzvah

Planning your child's bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah begins the day the child is born. While the learning takes place between your child and the tutor, you have the responsibility of putting together the celebration. Whether you choose a small luncheon or an elaborate evening with dinner and dancing, organization and planning is key.


Instructions


1. Contact the temple when the child reaches age ten. Find out about the process and the synagogue's preparation time frame for the candidate. Anticipate that formal lessons start one year before the bar/bat mitzvah.

3. Reserve the venue at least one year before the event. Book the photographer and videographer, florist, entertainment and caterer and pay the deposits. Involve the child and decide on a theme, color scheme and "tzedakah" (charity) community service project.


4. Organize the guest list six month prior to the event. Make sure that all addresses are current. Order an ample supply of invitations, thank you cards, direction cards, napkins and guest towels. Finalize plans for decorations and floral arrangements. Decide on party favors for the younger guests.


5. Make arrangements for out-of-town guests to stay with friends and family in the area or at a local inn or hotel. Check for special rates for large groups. Decide if there's other events for family and close friends, like a Shabbat the evening before or Sunday brunch.


6. Finalize the menu, decorations and floral arrangements three months before the date. Arrange hair and nail appointments. Order personalized yarmulkes. Mail out the invitation eight weeks ahead. Work with the candidate to write something for the candle-lighting ceremony.


7. Conform all the plans in the final weeks. Develop the seating plan. Arrange the rehearsal time. Coordinate transportation for out-of-town guests. Confirm the final count with the caterer. Assemble an emergency kit with scissors, lip gloss, make-up, a hairbrush and comb, nail file and small sewing kit.

Convince An Employer To Pay For Education

There are a lot of great reasons to go back to college to get an education, but unfortunately for many people, it can be difficult to pay for school out of your own pocket. Tuition reimbursement is a great option, but you have to convince an employer to pay for education. You can approach the situation in several different ways.


Instructions








1. Crunch the numbers. Sit down and figure out how much your education would cost, and then what the education would mean to your employer. You may be able to work faster, make smarter business choices or reach more clients, which would all come off the bottom line. Figure out what it would cost to hire and train a new employee who possesses the skill set you're trying to acquire. If the employer sees that your education could mean more money for him, he'll be more willing to pay for your education.








2. Let the employer pick the degree. If your boss thinks that she has a say in the matter, she may be more willing to pay for your education. If the company needs more help in marketing, offering to get a marketing degree may sweeten the deal.


3. Sign away your life. One way to convince your employer to pay for education is to offer to sign an exclusive contract. This means that you promise to work only for them for a certain amount of time after you get your degree. This will help them see that your education will translate into more revenues for the company long term.


4. Threaten to quit. It's a bold move, but depending on your position in the company, it may be a wise one. Be courteous about it, but be honest. Tell your present employer that you want to go back to school, and the new employer is offering to pay for your tuition. See if your employer will counter the offer and agree to foot the bill instead.

Determining Credit Scores

A credit score is a number lenders use to judge potential clients. It represents the risk a lender assumes when lending a person money. For most of us, determining credit scores is easy. Step 1 below explains get your credit score. Understanding how companies go about determining credit scores is another matter. The most common credit score is FICO (which stands for Fair Isaac Corporation, the firm that markets the system). Steps 2-6 explain the factors that go into determining credit scores so you can understand how your own credit score was determined.


Instructions


1. Find out what your credit score is. Unfortunately, determining your credit score isn’t free. Offers of “free credit reports and credit scores” usually mean you must purchase a credit monitoring service and the free part is for an introductory period only. The best way to find out your credit score is to go directly to the three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Under federal law they will provide you with a copy of your credit report once a year, but you will still have to purchase the right to see our credit score.








2. Evaluate your bill paying history. Making timely payments counts the most toward your total credit score (this is 35 percent of the FICO score). The main thing to be aware of is that very late payments (over 30 days past due) in your recent past will seriously hurt your rating on this part of the credit score.


3. Total what you owe to all your creditors. Too much debt is a warning sign to lenders and so lowers a credit score. A good rule of thumb is if you are able to meet all the payments required and still save at least a little each month, you are probably in good shape. Don’t underestimate the importance of this component of a credit score—it counts for 30 percent of the FICO score.


4. Check to see how long you’ve been paying bills without late payments. Recent history is weighted more heavily but the longer your “track record” of using credit responsibly, the better. This part of a credit score is 15 percent of the total.


5. List any applications you’ve made for new accounts in the last year. Stability is a big plus when lenders assess your financial behavior. Frequently opening or closing accounts will reduce your credit score. An important point to be aware of is that anytime you apply to open a new account, your credit is checked and the number of applications you make are counted. If you are turned down for credit, this is reported and counts against you. The good news about this part of the credit score, which account for 10 percent of the total score, is that it is short term. A person can raise his credit score within 6 months to a year simply by not applying for credit and not closing old accounts.


6. Divide your debt into different categories. The last part of the FICO scores (10 percent of the total) looks at the type of debt a person has. This is related to the total debt (see Step 3). People who have mortgages and are therefore hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt can and do have excellent credit scores. Others may owe only a few thousand dollars and find themselves marked down for having too much debt and then again for the type of debt they have. If you have a lot of credit card or other unsecured short term debt, this counts against you. Secured debt (like a car loan) and long-term secured debt like mortgages can be much larger in their dollar amount without lowering a credit score.

What Are Some Common Costumes For Halloween

Dressing up for Halloween is a time-honored tradition.


Many of the most popular Halloween costumes are common because they are easy to create. Some are both easy and laced within the folklore of the holiday, as well. Black cats and witches are identifiable symbols of Halloween and great costumes. Others are familiar symbols of life, both fantasy and reality. Store-bought, or complicated costumes of superheroes and fictional characters are popular with the dedicated enthusiast.








Witch


A long black skirt, a broomstick, white shirt and black vest, or black shirt start the costume off right. Boots, or dress shoes are best. Make a pointed hat with dark material and cardboard. Elaborate makeup usually includes nose putty to make a long, hooked nose with warts.








Cat


The classic black cat is a traditional Halloween symbol and a popular costume; it can be simple or elaborate. Black pants, black shirt, and homemade ears secured to a black headband are the basic beginnings of this costume. Black mascara creates face markings for the simple form of the costume. A cat nose and mysterious cat eyes are enough to create illusion. Makeup that is more elaborate adds to the effectiveness and beauty of the costume.


Pirate


A pirate costume is something most people can make without ever entering a store. Climb into the back of your closet and pull out worn dark pants, an over-sized dress shirt, a couple of belts, and a bandana and you have the start of a good pirate costume. Wear a dark vest over the big shirt. If you do not have a vest, use an old, fitted shirt and cut off the sleeves and neck to make a quick vest. Some mascara heavy around the eyes, blurred to make them look dark and mysterious, big dangling earrings (hoops work best) and heavy chains around the neck work for the decorations. Make an eye patch out of spare dark material and black shoelaces. Make a sword out of cardboard and aluminum foil. Boots create the final touch, but if you don't have boots, dig around for a pair of loafers or buckle-top shoes. To make them look like boots take some dark material and tuck it into the tops of the shoes, pull it up your calf and secure with a piece of string, or a shoelace. Fold the material down over the string and you have a boot top.


Gypsy


Men can use a basic pirate costume minus the sword, boots and eye patch for a gypsy costume. Women use a flowing skirt, the more worn looking the better, in bright colors. A peasant blouse or big over-sized formal men's shirt makes a good woman's gypsy top. Add many beads, and big earrings (even the guys) for decoration.

What Are Lipid Tests

Lipid tests are more commonly called cholesterol tests, lipid profiles or lipid panels, as well as coronary risk panels. They are a set of blood tests designed to measure the amount of fatty substances, specifically cholesterol and triglycerides, within the human body. Since high levels of the two organic compounds usually produce no symptoms, lipid tests are essential for detecting the presence or likelihood of the heart disease they can eventually cause.


Lipid Risks


The word "lipid" refers to greasy biological substances, such as fats, oils and sterols found in fatty tissue. Human bodies require a certain amount of organic fat to function properly. However, when blood contains excessive fat, heart disease and the condition atherosclerosis become more likely. Atherosclerosis involves the inner walls of arteries, where blood fat accumulates, forming plaque that can narrow, harden or block the vessels and ultimately restrict blood flow.


Function


Lipid tests identify potentially dangerous amounts of blood fat and, therefore, a patient's risk of developing a heart condition related to unhealthy arteries. They can quantify various substances in the blood, but four measurements are taken most often: overall cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (also called good or HDL cholesterol), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (also called bad or LDL cholesterol) and triglycerides. Once the levels of the four substances are known, doctors can devise an appropriate treatment plan that takes into account any other risk factors in the patient's medical history.


Procedure


The lipid test is a standard blood test that lasts several minutes. A technician cleans a small area of one arm with antiseptic, ties an elastic band around the upper arm to plump the veins with blood, inserts a needle into a vein, unwraps the elastic to restore blood flow and removes the needle after sufficient blood fills the vial.








Patients must avoid all food and fluids except water for 9-12 hours before blood is drawn, and doctors sometimes recommend temporarily discontinuing medications that raise cholesterol levels, too.


Time Frame








Adult patients who are healthy and not at risk of developing heart disease should have a cholesterol test every five years and then follow-up with a full lipid panel if high cholesterol is present. Since heart disease and high cholesterol can both start developing in childhood, doctors also order lipid profiles for high-risk children who are at least 2 years old. Affected children may be overweight or have a family history of medical problems, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.


Results


Although measurements differ based on a country's preferred units (for example, the number of milligrams per deciliter in the United States, but the number of millimoles per liter in Europe), lipid test results generally separate lipid levels into categories that reflect assessments like optimal, near optimal, poor, borderline high and high. If the reported numbers are cause for concern, doctors typically recommend a modified lifestyle--such as eating better, exercising and losing weight--to lower cholesterol. They may also prescribe drugs that achieve the same effect or order another lipid panel or additional tests to verify or clarify the results.

Beaded salvation bracelets or necklaces are probably the most common wordless gospel craft used by Sunday School teachers. Provide a supply of the bead colors and yarn, string, ribbon or plastic or leather cording. Students string the beads in color order as you tell the story of salvation. Tie the ends off to secure it around the child's wrist or neck. Children can make several to give to friends to help them witness the gospel to others.


Salvation Pins


A beaded pin craft is another way to wear the testimony of the gospel and create a conversation starter for sharing Jesus with a child's friends. Open a safety pin and slide several black beads on the arm. Close the pin. Repeat for each color of the wordless gospel. Arrange the pins in color order according to the story of salvation and slide the heads of the beaded safety pin over the open arm of another safety pin. Hot glue the horizontal support pin to a pin back and attach to the child's shirt.


Wordless Gospel Keychain


A wordless gospel keychain keeps the plan of salvation close at hand to remind you of God's love as you are coming in and going out as in Deuteronomy 6. Knot one end of a cord around a keyring. String five beads of each color in order. Cap the end with a cross or fish symbol bead and tie off. Another option is to intersperse color beads with letter and heart beads to spell out "Jesus Loves Me."


Wordless Gospel Bookmark


If a child has friends who love to read, a wordless gospel bookmark can be a thoughtful and practical gift that tells the story of salvation. Thread a cross or fish pendant onto a 12 to 18-inch length of beading wire and secure it in place with a crimping bead. As you give the message of salvation, have the children string 10 to 20 beads of each color in story order. Seal the end with another crimping bead. A second pendant is optional. Feed any loose wire back through the bead chain to hide the sharp end.

Traditionally, according to the American Bar Association (ABA), many pre-law students have studied English, history or political science, but others enter law school with degrees in the hard sciences, business, art or music. Rather than emphasizing a particular course of study, the ABA outlines general knowledge that any student should possess before he enters law school, as well as a set of skills that will help ensure that he prospers there.


General Knowledge


The ABA says that the successful law student must have a broad knowledge of history, particularly of U.S. history. She must understand how the political system in the United States works and be aware of the current political scene.


She needs basic math skills at the pre-calculus level and sufficient financial savvy to analyze financial data. She must have a fundamental understanding of human behavior and social interactions.

Reading and Writing


You should enter law school able to read materials carefully, and to analyze the content and the implications of that content. You'll spend most of law school reading, and a lot of what you'll read will be detailed, arcane and even tedious, so hone your critical reading skills well before you start.


Besides spending hours in the law library, lawyers write---all the time. They write memorandums, briefs, petitions, wills and trusts; they spend hours writing documents that have to stand the scrutiny of other lawyers, judges and their clients. Learning to write well before you enter law school will give you a huge leg up.


Listening and Talking


Of course lawyers talk, but they also have to be able to listen, first to their clients, and then to the opposing counsel, witnesses and judges. To be successful, you'll need to be able to verbalize your case persuasively, to analyze any attacks on that case, and to respond to those challenges eloquently and well.


Researching


Though the ABA assures prospective lawyers that research techniques specific to the study of law are taught in law school, it also stresses that general experience in thoroughly researching a subject will prove invaluable. Undergraduate classes that require you to write substantial research papers can help you acquire these skills.


Managing Your Tasks and Your Time


To be successful at practicing law, you have be able to break down huge tasks into manageable pieces, determine accomplish each segment and then get them all done, draw conclusions and prepare those conclusions for presentation, and do it all within specified time limits. Taking undergraduate courses that oblige you to produce significant work, whether pure research, writing or a combination, on deadlines will be excellent preparation.

Fix A Bad Perm







A bad perm can temporarily ruin your appearance and self esteem. Depending on the damage to your hair, you may be able to fix the perm by using a deep conditioner for several days or by cutting the hair to remove the damaged parts. By fixing the bad perm as soon as possible, you may be able to salvage most of your hair and create a style that makes you comfortable.


Instructions


1. Determine the cause of the problem. A bad perm is usually the result of perming dry or unhealthy hair, leaving treatment chemicals on too long, or rolling the curling rods incorrectly.


2. Use a deep conditioning product from the hair salon or the drugstore to fix a perm that's frizzy or dull. Apply the conditioner to wet hair and allow it to penetrate the hair shaft. Leave the conditioner in your hair for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. Reapply as needed to tame out of control hair.


3. Ask your stylist to cut off all damaged ends to fix hair that's been overtreated. You may need to have your hair cut shorter than normal so healthy hair can grow back. Sometimes a trim may be all that's needed to removed damaged ends. Avoid using hair styling products such as curling irons and blow dryers until healthy hair has grown in.


4. Remove fish tail curls by trimming them with scissors. You can do this yourself or you can ask your stylist. Fish tail curls can occur when curling rods have been rolled incorrectly or if hair does not respond well to chemical treatments. You can also use a curling iron to smooth out fishtails so they look more natural.








5. Use a conditioning shampoo and conditioner that's recommended for chemically treated hair to help maintain shine and reduce frizziness. Maintain the perm by allowing your hair to air dry. Use your fingers to style. Use light styling products such as gel or mousse to hold a specific style during the day.

Average Salary


College admissions counselors in four-year colleges and universities made an average salary of nearly $48,000 per year in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This salary was lower than the average salary of other educational, guidance and school counselors nationwide, who managed to bring home average salaries of just under $56,000 per year. Those working in junior colleges managed to earn average salaries right around the $56,000 per year mark.


Pay Scale


Junior and four-year college admission counselor salaries can be placed in the larger context of educational counselor salaries to provide some additional perspective. According to the BLS, educational counselors earned salaries that typically ranged from around $32,000 to $86,000 per year in 2010. Salaries within this wide range varied by location, experience and employer. The reported median salary for those working in this field was $53,380.


Location


College admissions counselors will generally make salaries that vary by geographic location, also. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports these salaries in terms of average salary. According to the BLS, educational counselors in New Jersey were paid the highest average salaries at nearly $71,000 per year in 2010. In New York, counselors earned an average of $62,500, while those in California made $63,000. Educational counselors in Texas made $55,000.


Job Outlook


The job market for admissions counselors and other educational counselors will continue to grow by about 14 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This above-average rate of growth will occur in response to the growing population and its educational needs. As more college-aged students become eligible for college, admissions counselors will be needed to help them find their places within the college education system.

How Much Do You Get Paid During Medical Residency

Medical residents typically earn $45,000 to $55,000 per year -- more than the average U.S. household.








Residency is the final stage of medical training for most physicians, although fellowship programs that teach sub-specialties may follow resident training. The lengths of residencies vary among physician specialties, and pay rates for resident physicians vary among institutions. Although salaries may vary within a single institution based on specialty, most resident salary levels are within a couple thousand dollars despite specialty area.


Kaiser Permanente








The Kaiser Permanente internal medicine residency program at the Los Angeles Medical Center provides a full benefit package in addition to a salary. Medical and major medical coverage is included, as is dental insurance, at a minimal cost to residents. Six paid holidays and three weeks of paid vacation are offered, and reimbursement is available for many education, testing and licensing costs. Sick leave and disability coverage, malpractice coverage, meals and other incidentals also are included. The base salaries for 2011-2012 are $48,846 for post-graduate year one, or PGY 1. For PGY 2, the salary is $50,556 and the salary is $52,325 for PGY 3. For those residents who perform additional resident training, the salaries are $54,156 for PGY 4, $56,052 for PGY 5 and $58,014 for PGYs 6 and 7.


Johns Hopkins


The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore offered a PGY 1 salary of $46,663 in 2010-2011 for its emergency medicine residents. For PGY 2, the figure is $48,909 a year, for PGY 3 the salary is $50,957 and the PGY 4 salary is $53,198. Professional memberships and conferences are paid by the hospital. Other benefits include three weeks paid vacation the first year and four weeks thereafter; health, dental, life and disability insurance; maternity and paternity leave; a retirement plan; malpractice insurance; paid meals; and payment for incidental items such as parking fees.


University of California-San Diego


At the UC San Diego Health System's Hillcrest Medical Center, the pay scale in 2010-2011 for internal medicine residents is $48,259 for first-year residents, $50,003 for PGY 2s, $52,069 for third-year students and $54,335 for students during their fourth years. Additional stipends include $500 a year for educational costs, $2,500 per year for housing and $600 a year for licensing fees. Health, dental and vision insurance is provided at no charge, as is a $50,000 life insurance policy. Disability and malpractice insurance is included, four weeks of paid vacation are provided, and meals are available free of charge.


Beth Israel Medical Center


The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's emergency medicine residency program, during 2009-2010, offered salaries of $43,641 for PGY 1 students, $46,233 for second-year students, $48,852 for PGY 3 students, $51,500 for fourth-year residents, $52,836 for fifth-year students and $54,164 for PGY 6 residents. Part of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center provides a standard insurance and benefits package, as well as a generous leave-of-absence policy that allows residents to take time off for personal, educational, family or child reasons.


Hurley Medical Center


Hurley Medical Center is a 443-bed non-profit, public teaching hospital located in Flint, Mich. The region's only Level 1 trauma center, Hurley is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan-Flint, Mott Community College and Henry Ford Health System. It offers resident training in 11 specialties and pays its residents the same salaries regardless of specialty. Students who have previously received a Bachelor's degree in another field may be eligible for an accelerated BSN or a second degree BSN. Accelerate programs are fast-paced, allowing you to receive your BSN in as little as 12 to 21 months. Second degree BSN programs are similar to a regular BSN, but require that students maintain a 3.0 grade point average. An RN-to-BSN program is for nurses who received an Associate's degree but want to go on to earn their Bachelor's.








Pros and Cons


In some cases, a four-year BSN is preferable to an Associate's degree because it provides better job opportunities. However, an Associate's degree allows you to begin working and earning money sooner. Earning an Associate's degree in nursing at a community college is less costly than earning a Bachelor's at a four-year institution. Starting pay for either degree tends to be the same, with employers leaning towards hiring applicants with a BSN. BSN applicants also have the possibility of moving up to higher paying positions. Choosing which degree is right for you is a personal choice that should be decided carefully.


Knowledge Gained


With either degree, students will learn the same basic principles of nursing, including psychiatric nursing, maternal and fetal care, pediatrics, adult health, community health and geriatric nursing. A Bachelor's degree, however, will take you deeper into nursing theory along with learning more technical skills, and may also lead to future management positions.

529 College savings plans help you save money for your child's college education. A 529 is a state sponsored and managed plan. If your child does not use the funds for a college education, you may wish to retain any unused funds and put them toward your own retirement. You'll need to know how this is done.


Process


The process for moving funds from a 529 plan to an IRA involves liquidating the 529 plan. Funds cannot be directly rolled into an IRA without paying taxes. Instead you must contact your 529 plan administrator. Request a distribution form. Fill out the form, and include your 529 account number and the amount you want to withdraw. If you are closing the account, you must indicate this on the form. Sign and return the form. You will receive the balance of your 529 plan within a few weeks. Then, you must deposit the money into your IRA. You must follow your IRA's contribution guidelines. This means that you cannot contribute more than $5,000 per year (if you're under age 50), or $6,000 per year (if you are 50 years or older) to the IRA.


Significance

Benefit

Considerations


In the future, you may want to consider using a traditional or Roth IRA to help your children save money for college. A Roth IRA, especially, allows you to remove contributions prior to removing investment earnings. You may remove these contributions anytime before 59 1/2 without a penalty and without paying any tax. If your child never goes to college, you can simply leave the money in the IRA. This eliminates the need for a separate IRA account designed only for college savings.

College Smoking Facts

Smoking is a major public health issue in the United States, and college students make up one of the largest populations of smokers in the country. Tobacco companies often use advertising to target college students, and many students who begin smoking in college continue to do so throughout their adult lives. However, smoking prevention efforts aimed at college students are not always successful.


History


In 1981, about 8 percent of college students smoked, but by 1998, the number had risen to more than 28 percent, according to a report from the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program.








Causes


Researchers from the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program say that factors such as stress, peer pressure, low self-esteem and a desire to not gain weight all contribute to the high number of college students who smoke.


Statistics


A 2008 survey by the American College Health Association found that 16 percent of college students had smoked in the previous 30 days, and that 66 percent had never smoked.


Regulations


A 2001 study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that smoking was banned in public spaces on 80 percent of college campuses, but only 27 percent banned smoking in dorms.


Prevention/Solution








Education efforts and programs that help smokers quit are an important part of anti-smoking education, but in 2001 only 40 percent of colleges offered any smoking cessation program, according to the Harvard School of Public Health.


Quitting


According to the American Cancer Society, 50 percent of college students who smoke tried, and failed, to quit in the previous year.

Instructions


1. Identify what kind of journalist you want to be. For instance, are you interested in covering hard-news stories or investigative pieces for a daily press, or would you rather do business profile interviews and "puff pieces" that constitute a substantial portion of content in weekly community newspapers? Are there topics such as music, movies, sports or politics that you consider yourself an expert on?


2. Identify how much time and energy you can reasonably devote to your writing. A daily press, for example, will be a much more demanding employer than a weekly publication, in which you have greater flexibility to deliver stories based on the timeliness of their content. Likewise, if you decide to focus your reporting on the field of entertainment, there will be an expectation that you attend a lot of events and establish an expansive networking strategy to tap into the latest gossip.








3. Identify whether you would be more comfortable with the structured environment of an 8-5 desk job or would prefer to be a field reporter/interviewer who primarily submits stories and photos via email.








4. Start a blog on a favorite topic and commit to writing something new on it every day. This will not only get you into the discipline of deadlines but also help you to start getting a following of readers who are interested in what you have to say.


5. Start working toward a degree in Journalism, Communications, or English if you don't already have one. While it's certainly possible to get an internship or freelance journalism gigs without one, editors tend to view college graduates more favorably when it comes to assignments that pay higher or carry more responsibility.


6. Take classes in photography if you are not already skilled with a camera. Depending on the kind of journalism you pursue, stories that are accompanied by high quality photos are generally going to pay more than those that are just straight text.


7. Write/edit stories for school newspapers, contribute regularly to newsletters, and pitch ideas to trade magazines and online publications. The idea here is to establish a portfolio of writing credits.


8. Submit articles to journalism competitions, especially those where you can get constructive feedback for your work.


9. Study the newspapers you would like to write for. Familiarize yourself with the names of the editorial staff members and the contributing writers. Call and inquire whether they accept articles and interviews from freelance writers.


10. Understand the target demographics of the publications you want to write for. This will impact the tone, vocabulary and complexity of your content.


11. Write short, insightful letters to the editor on the articles that particularly resonated with you. Whether or not your letter(s) get published, you're subliminally sending your name onto the editor's radar screen. (Just don't do it so often that you're perceived to be a pest.)

It's a great way to hone your reporting skills as well as establish working relationships with the media.


15. Find a mentor who is doing the kind of writing you admire. Most people enjoy talking about their jobs, how they got started, and dispensing helpful advice.


16. Identify a need that is not currently being addressed by the publication. For instance, let's say that it's a weekly paper in a community that is largely comprised of families with young children. You happen to notice that it's not carrying a regular calendar section of fun and economical activities that families can enjoy together. Put together a brief proposal that explains your qualifications to write such a section, how it would benefit the subscribers, and assemble a sample of what your proposed section would include.
