Emancipated minors can decide to move out and live on their own.
U.S. laws allow a minor to become emancipated and be free from any parental control, financially or otherwise. In some cases, a minor can be considered emancipated automatically; in others he can require emancipation in a court of justice. Either way, the minor agrees to the responsibilities that emancipation implies. Because emancipation means no longer having an adult to relay on for help or support a minor should think very carefully about taking this step.
Automatic Emancipation
A minor is automatically emancipated under the law when she reaches a certain age, as defined by the law in the state were he resides. If all these conditions are satisfied, the minor needs to complete certain forms and file them with a court of law. She also needs to provide documents that sustain her petition for emancipation, like a valid address and proof of legal income.
Alternatives to Emancipation
Legal emancipation is an important decision to make and shouldn't be taken lightly because it involves responsibilities that a minor might not be ready to handle. As good as it sounds to be independent, a minor needs to weigh all the aspects of being the only one to decide on his actions and deal with the consequences. Besides getting an emancipation court decision, he may consider family counseling with his parents, moving with close relatives temporarily, seeking assistance with agencies that handle family and minors' issues or getting the parents to approve of his temporary moving out until he has reached a decision.

Some of the more enduring advertising slogans in the 1960s referred to social upheaval by cultivating a tone of friendliness and charm. United Airlines invited its passengers to "fly the friendly skies" -- a tag line that would be associated with the airline until the mid-1990s. Coca Cola's 1960s tagline, "the real thing," was used in its famous "Hilltop" ad with a chorus of teenagers proclaiming they'd "like to buy the world a Coke." The slogan suggested that no other soft drink is like Coke.
Political Slogans
Political slogans were less touchy-feely. Against a backdrop of growing American involvement in Vietnam, 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater's campaign slogan told prospective voters, "In your heart, you know he's right." Not to be outdone, supporters of Goldwater's opponent Lyndon Johnson turned the ad around into a cynical commentary on Goldwater's relatively pro-war stance, suggesting instead, "In your guts, you know he's nuts." Johnson swept the 1964 election in a landslide victory.
Protest Slogans
Unhappy with the status quo, student movements linked with civil rights supporters, advocates of equal rights for women, and anti-war protesters as part of a massive current of social change. Many slogans were drawn from popular culture and music; "we shall overcome," which adorned countless buttons in the 1960s, originated from a gospel song and spoke to the belief of many who fought in the civil rights movement. "Give peace a chance," another common slogan, was the title of the 1969 John Lennon song. Other slogans were less inspirational; a common slogan of anti-war protesters, directed against President Lyndon Baines Johnson, asked, "Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?"
Counterculture Slogans
Less overtly political than slogans protesters used, the counterculture -- in addition to visual symbols like tie-dye shirts, the peace sign, and the yellow "smiley face" (created in 1963) -- made widespread use of slogans. Some of these tied directly back to other movements, like the phrase "make love, not war." Some were apolitical, such as the famous slogan associated with psychedelic theorist Timothy Leary, who, with media scholar Marshall McLuhan, suggested that people would be best served if they would just "turn on, tune in and drop out."

Providing a family's health history gives a physician information he or she needs in order to manage their medical care. Drawing a medical genogram helps create a big picture of genetic diseases or inherited conditions from generation to generation in a family. Documenting medical issues within a family provides an accurate family history that is easy to maintain over time. It may also make going to a new doctor less stressful when trying to remember the family health history.
Instructions
1. Gather documents from family members, including death certificates, birth certificates and marriage licenses. Get a copy of the family tree if it's available. Copies of public records can be found at county record offices where the birth, death or marriage took place.
2. Record medical information from family members in a notebook such as dates of birth and death, cause of death, age at time of death, sex, ethnicity, miscarriage, stillbirths and any diseases or medical conditions. Include factors such as a history of weight problems, exercise habits, diet and smoking habits for at least three generations, starting with the grandparents. Take a medical history on all family members dead and alive.
3. Create a medical genogram on an unlined sheet of paper large enough to put grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, siblings, spouses and children. Use a pen or pencil and colored pencils or markers to indicate different diseases and conditions. Make a key of the symbols and colors used in the genogram.
4. Place males to the left and females to the right. Males are symbolized by squares, females with circles. The index person has a set of double lines. Connect married couples with a solid line. A divorce has two lines in the middle and one line for a separation. Children are listed from left to right (oldest to youngest) below the parents with a solid line and adopted children with a dotted line.
5. Place an "x" inside the square or circle for deceased individuals. Make a note indicating cause and age of death. Put the age of family members still living inside the symbol and note the age of onset of disease, illness or accident. Other medical symbols include a square with a black circle in the middle to signify a carrier of a disease, a square divided into four parts to show the individual is affected, a square with a line down the middle signifying affected by hearsay and, if it has a question mark inside, it means possibly affected.
6. Color in a small part of the symbol for each individual who has a disease or condition. Use red in the upper left corner for heart disease, pink in the upper right corner for breast cancer and green in the bottom left corner for diabetes.
7. Make copies of the finished medical genogram for your doctor, family members who may want them and for your own records.
8. Discuss the genogram and the health history of your family with your doctor. He or she may suggest you and other members of your family schedule screening tests for certain diseases or preventative measures to lessen the risk of health issues such as heart disease or high blood pressure.
9. Update the genogram every two years with current information and add new family members. Make copies for your doctor and family.

Qualifying for federal financial aid is not difficult as long as you and your parents have met certain qualifications. Fill Out FAFSA
Even if you don't believe you will qualify for financial aid, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In general, the less your parents are able to help, the more aid you may qualify for.

In order to qualify for federal financial aid, you must be either a citizen of the United States or a legal resident. Students who are in the U.S. illegally will not be able to qualify for financial aid.
Social Security Number and Selective Service
You will be required to provide your Social Security number. This is necessary so the Department of Education can determine your eligibility based on your citizenship or legal residency.
If you are a male between the ages of 18 and 25, registration with the Selective Service is mandatory if you wish to obtain financial aid. This does not mean that you will be "drafted" into the military while you are in college.
High School Diploma and Enrolled in College
In order to qualify for federal financial aid, you must have earned your high school diploma or your GED. You may be asked to take and pass an approved examination that has been approved by the Department of Education to meet qualification requirements for financial aid.
Regular Student in Degree-Seeking Program
At the time you enroll at the college of your choice, you must be a regular student participating in a degree-seeking program. Students who are not working toward a degree are not eligible to apply for financial aid.
No Drug Conviction While Receiving Financial Aid
You must not have a drug conviction for a drug-related offense you received while you were receiving financial aid. This includes work-study, grants and loans. Taking part in an activity that could result in such a conviction is grounds for losing financial aid eligibility.

When it comes to modeling, your portfolio serves as your resume and showcases your body of work. Whether you are signed to an agency or are a freelance model, putting together your portfolio is one of the most important aspects of your career.

Getting Pictures
1. Before even attempting to put together a modeling portfolio, it is important to know what type of modeling you can do. Freelance models have greater flexibility in this area but should focus on a main category they will receive the most work in. If you do glamour or swim wear, then those are the types of photos you should have in your portfolio. High fashion models should have high fashion images in their books (another term for portfolio). Be realistic. If you are too short for fashion, stick to commercial/print and lifestyle images.
2. Use magazines and other publications as reference guides for the types of images you'll want to include in your portfolio. This will help you get an idea of the type of shoot you'll need to set up.
3. For models signed to agencies, your agent will have a sit-down with you and advise you as to what types of images should be in your portfolio. They will also recommend photographers for you to work with that the agency trusts. It is in your best interest to go with the photographer referred to you by the agent. If you go outside the channels, your agent may not like the photos, resulting in a waste of time, effort and a portfolio your agent can't use.
4. Freelance models can turn to online modeling communities as well as other outlets to find local photographers to work with. Be sure to look at the photographer's work and choose one who specializes in the type of images you want to include. If you are satisfied with their work, shoot them an email or give them a call to set up a meeting or shoot.
5. Once you have found a photographer you want to work with, meet with him/her before your shoot to discuss the themes, concepts and/or looks you are going for. Explain what types of photos you'd like to try. From here you two can agree on locations, outfits, date, time, etc.
6. Make sure you have everything you need packed before your shoot so you don't forget anything. You should have your hair and makeup professionally done as well to guarantee the best images. Agency represented models often have the comfort of having a makeup, hair and wardrobe stylist present during the portfolio shoot, while freelance models may have to do it themselves or get it done somewhere prior to the shoot.
7. Once you have taken your photos, it's time to review them and pick the best. Out of the bunch you'll want to make sure to have the following among your images: headshot, ? body shot, full body shot. You'll want different outfits and locations to show diversity as well. Play with poses and give a variety...if you have the same poses over and over your portfolio will be boring.
8. After the key images have been selected, you can purchase a portfolio case (if your agent doesn't provide you with one). You can find them at any office supply store and the prices range from very affordable to very expensive so you'll be able to find on that fits within your budget. It's best to buy one that can hold between 15-20 8"x10" photos.
9. As your modeling career progresses, update your images in your portfolio to reflect your most current work. In addition to regular modeling photos, include any tearsheets you get. Talented players could be located anywhere, and a team has to be able to visit them in person frequently, bring them to the campus and more. Therefore a larger budget allows a school to recruit a wide range of good players and to do so more effectively.
Total Recruiting Budgets
Colleges are not required to divulge the recruiting budget for each individual sport, but do have to tell the NCAA what the total men's sports recruiting budget is. Football scholarships take up the largest part of any school's athletic budget. Therefore, it's safe to conclude the schools with the biggest overall budgets are the ones spending the most on football.
Biggest Spenders
According to a report from the Chronicle of Higher Education, which covered the 2006-2007 season, 21 colleges spent at least $1 million in their recruiting for men's sports. The University of Tennessee was the only school that admitted spending more than $2 million.
Comparison of Conferences
The recruiting budget totals between the major conferences can vary greatly. For example, in the Southeastern Conference where football recruiting is particularly fierce, the recruiting budget for the 12 conference schools totaled more than $13 million. That was the highest of any conference in the country. The Big East, with 16 member universities, had the lowest total recruiting budget expenses with less than half of the SEC's total, just over $6 million.
Smaller Conferences
For schools outside of the major Bowl Championship Series conferences, the biggest spender was UNLV with a $700,000 recruiting budget for all athletics. Only four programs outside of these major conferences had recruiting budgets of more than $600,000. The lowest spender in Division I athletics was Louisiana-Monroe, with a total recruiting budget of just $134,000.
The state of the economy in 2008 and 2009 also forced many smaller schools to reduce their budgets further, widening the gap between them and the major universities they compete against.

2. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aidm or FASFA. This form can be filled out at fasfa.ed.gov. Your FASFA needs to be filled out months in advance of you starting your first term, so visit their website to see what deadlines apply to you. For example, students beginning in a fall term should fill out their FASFA in February or March. Students who fill out the form may qualify for a Pell Grant from the government.
3. Contact your school, the department that you will be a student in, local businesses and groups to see what types of scholarship opportunities they offer. Scholarships can be given out for academics, sports, music, need or to expand diversity. Check out sites such as FinAid.org to see what scholarships you may qualify for.
4. Receive student loans to pay whatever costs that you cannot cover with grants, scholarships or your own money. Student loans are different from regular loans in that the interests rates are often lower and you do not have to start paying the money back until you are finished with school. Stafford Loans are offered through the Department of Education in subsidized and unsubsidized forms. PLUS loans are similar loans that are taken out in the name of the student's parents. Contact the Department of Education to check the current rates. Banks and other finance companies also disburse loans; however, the interest rates on these will be higher.

Learning pre-calculus is an important step students must master before they move on to calculus and other forms of higher math. Pre-calculus can be difficult for many students, but there are ways to go about learning it that may help.

1. Brush up on your algebra. Pre-calculus builds directly from the concepts you learned in algebra I and II, so make sure you're solid on those before you get started on pre-calculus. If you've started a pre-calculus course and are having trouble, go back and review your algebra; a good review will strengthen your pre-calculus work.
2. Take a class. If you're not currently taking a pre-calculus course but need the skills, sign up for a class at your local college or university. If you took a pre-calculus course a long time ago and need a refresher, a single-semester class will be able to get you back up to speed.
3. Work with a tutor. Nothing beats one-on-one teaching and learning. If you're currently taking a pre-calculus course, ask your instructor for tutor recommendations. 4. Work practice problems. Working problems every day will help reinforce the concepts you're learning, and if you work every day (or almost every day) for at least a half hour, what you've learned will stick with you. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school presents many challenges to a child, who may have been in the same school for seven years. He'll have to get accustomed to a new layout, different schedule and strange faces in the halls which can all be extremely intimidating. With a few suggestions, a child can be more prepared for middle school and the inevitable changes ahead.

1. Attend orientation day. Chances are better than good that your school offers an orientation day where you can acquaint yourself with the building, the classrooms, some of the staff and administration and maybe even walk through your schedule and try out your locker.
2. Participate in events held at your new school. When your middle school sponsors plays, concerts, dances or sporting events, grab a friend and go. You'll be much more comfortable when you become an attending student, and you may even meet new friends from other sending districts.
3. Accept your new responsibilities. You'll definitely have more on your plate at middle school than you did at elementary school, such as increased homework, switching classes, several teachers, a new schedule and being prepared for class with the right supplies and texts. Talk over all of this with your parents or new guidance counselor to answer any questions or concerns you might have.
4. Finish any summer homework. You've probably been given a packet with some math work and a reading list. While it's certainly no fun doing homework over the summer, it'll be even less fun entering a new school and starting a new school year if you don't prepare for it.
5. Get enough rest before the first day. About a week before the first bell, start going to bed earlier and getting up at the time you'll need to rise for school. It's a good way to retrain your body from the lazy summer schedule to its new routine.
6. Hold off on buying school supplies. Most teachers in middle school have very specific requirements for notebooks, paper and writing instruments. To be prepared for each class, either wait for a list to be mailed from the school or for the first day of classes to be sure you buy the right supplies.

Most people who itemize their taxes can deduct the interest they pay on home equity loans and home equity lines of credit. This can lead to significant savings at tax time. For example, someone with a home equity loan of $50,000 to be repaid over 15 years at 6 percent interest would be able to deduct $2,942.31 of interest payments the first year.
Itemize Deductions
Interest paid on home equity loans counts as a tax deduction only for people who itemize their tax deductions. People who take the standard deduction are not allowed to deduct home equity loan interest in addition to the standard deduction. However, many homeowners already itemize deductions because interest paid on the mortgage is also tax deductible. Itemize deductions by listing them on Schedule A of Form 1040.
Dollar Limit
Taxpayers can deduct only the interest paid on the first $100,000 of home equity debt, or the first $50,000 if married filing separately. However, the home equity loan counts as if it were an additional first mortgage if it is used to make improvements to the home that increase the home's value. This means that interest on home equity loans larger than $100,000 can be fully deductible if the loan was for improvements and the total mortgage for the home is less than $1 million.
Additional Restrictions
The home equity debt must be on the homeowner's first or second home to qualify for the personal tax deduction. Home equity debt on a property that the homeowner rents out must be listed as a business expense instead. In addition, if the sum of the home equity loan balance and the mortgage loan balance is more than the current market value of the home, not all of the interest is deductible. For example, a homeowner who owes $140,000 on a home with a market value of $170,000 can only deduct interest on the first $30,000 of a home equity loan.
Significance
The tax deduction on home equity loan interest makes these loans especially appealing as alternatives to other types of loans or credit. Most types of consumer debt, including auto loans and credit card debt, are not tax deductible. However, consumers can take out a home equity loan and use the money to pay off credit cards, auto loans or make any other kind of purchase. This makes it possible to deduct the interest on taxes.

4. Use the accredited online college list sites to find the right program, college or university for you.
5. Search around on the sites for a good match. Consider your price range and the kind of certification or degree you want.
6. Choose one or two schools and do a little deeper digging just to be sure these schools are legitimate. Return to the sites for CHEA and USDE and study up a little more. Also, check to see if the schools receive federally funded financial aid, which they can only receive if they are accredited.
7. Make your final choice for a school and the program or degree plan that suits you. Register for classes. You are now on your way to earning legitimately accredited and approved higher education credits for a certification, program or degree.

Making the Paper-Mache Volcano
1. Cut the top of the water bottle off. The top edge of the bottle is going to form the top of the volcano, so check to see how much or little to cut off the bottle to make the volcano as tall as desired.
2. Tape the bottle to the center of the cardboard so that it is upright. Make sure that the bottle is secure since it will be acting as the temporary center of the volcano.
3. Create the form of the volcano. Crumple up the newspaper into rolls to make the base form of the volcano and secure it with the tape. Make sure everything is well taped so that it is secure.
4. Make the paper-mache glue. In the large bowl, mix water and liquid laundry starch to make the paper-mache mixture. Use about one cup of water to two cups of starch.
5. Tear the newspaper into strips about one inch long. The paper will be overlapped, so make sure you have plenty of strips.
6. Dip the newspaper strips into the paper-mache mixture. Make sure that they are completely wet. Run the paper gently through your fingers to remove the excess liquid.
7. Lay the paper-mache strips onto the volcano form. Make sure the entire structure and the cardboard are covered. Be sure not to cover the opening to the bottle at the center of the volcano. This is where the lava will erupt. Overlap the paper to make a stronger form and smooth the newspaper from top to bottom gently with your fingers.
8. Wait for the paper mache to dry completely. This should take only a few hours.
9. Decorate your volcano with the paint. Any materials can be used to make the volcano unique.
Make the Volcano Erupt
10. Place baking soda in the opening of the volcano.
11. Mix together the vinegar and food coloring to the desired lava color.
12. Quickly pour the vinegar mixture into the volcano opening. The baking soda and vinegar will begin reacting in seconds and foamy lava will start erupting from the volcano.

The Texas Workforce Commission anticipates a 30 percent increase in the demand for workers in the field of education from 2008 through 2018. Prospective art teachers in Texas must receive professional teaching certification prior to working in a school in the state. The certification allows educators to teach art in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Texas State Board for Educator Certification oversees the certificate program.
Education
To qualify for art teaching certification in Texas, a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a teacher education program approved by the Texas Education Agency is necessary. As of January 2011, more than 60 private and public colleges and universities in Texas offered state-approved art teacher degree programs. Most college programs require four years of full-time study to complete. In addition to completing courses in education theory and teaching methods, students take studio arts courses to hone their skills and also participate in student teaching internships prior to graduation.
Examination
Prospective arts teachers must pass a standardized test called the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards. The art teacher examination consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Both paper and computerized versions of the test are offered at locations throughout Texas. The majority of the test, roughly 32 percent, covers creating works of art. Art history accounts for 27 percent of the content, while art education techniques makes up another 27 percent of the content. Questions related to art analysis and aesthetics comprise the remaining 14 percent.
Other Requirements
The Texas State Board for Educator Certification requires all prospective art teachers to pass a criminal background check prior to certification. Professional fingerprinting is necessary as a part of the check. Applicants must visit a fingerprinting center approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and pay a fee for the service. As of January 2011, the amount of the fee was $9.95. Prospective Texas educators who have a license to teach art from another state can typically receive an exemption from the state exam by submitting a copy of their licensing, official transcripts from the college programs and an application fee. The cost of the fee was $177 as of January 2011.
Continuing Education
Once issued, Texas art teachers' professional certification remains valid for five years. Prior to the expiration of their credentials, educators must complete 20 hours of continuing professional education coursework in order to renew their certification. Approximately 80 percent of those hours must consist of work directly related to art education. Teachers who choose to attend graduate-level education programs for continuing education courses can count every semester credit as 15 hours of continuing education coursework.

Your school resume will help to highlight your academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Instructions
1. List your academic honors. Write down everything you have accomplished academically since the ninth grade. If you accomplished something extra special in grade school or middle school, it would be wise to add it in this section. Academic honors may include such things as honor roll recognition, essay writing awards and science competitions,
2. Write down all of your extracurricular activities. This category can include clubs that you belong to, sports, class offices you have held, band, yearbook or any other nonacademic activity. Include all nonschool activities such as hobbies or service positions that will help make your resume unique.
3. Arrange your list in chronological order by category. The top of the document should have your name followed by the heading "Achievement Summary." The categories should be titled "Academic" and "Extracurricular." Further categorize your resume into time periods such as middle school and high school if applicable.
4. Create your school resume. Use a word processing program and type out your resume, making sure that it is appropriately formatted. Be sure to include your name, phone number and email address near the top of the document. Always spell check your work and proofread what you've written.
