Instructions


1. Read and reread the essay prompt. Become very will acquatinted with what the essay is asking and what direction you can go with your answer.








2. Break down the prompt to its essence: a simple one sentence direct question that will be the beginning of your thesis. Some schools already have a direct question; if this is the case with your essay, then you don't need to break down the prompt. However, the more complicated ones need to be sifted through to reveal the bare structure.


3. Plan an outline for the essay. Find an answer to the question that is as personal and appropriate as possible. The essay should have an introduction that addresses the prompt, examples or arguments and a conclusion that is succinct and thoughtful. These different sections do not necessarily need to be in different paragraphs, but are all essential parts of an essay.


4. Write the essay with the outline in mind. Remember, as you're writing, that the end result of the essay is an argument as to why you'd be a good candidate for the school.


5. Proof the essay many times through. Look for grammar and sentence flow. Ask yourself if it paints a good picture of you, the candidate.


6. Give the article to a college counselor or someone with knowledge about the school application process and ask for her opinion.

Make A Genogram For A Family

Recognize family patterns.


Structured like a family tree chart, a genogram adds visual line patterns and symbols to represent family relationships. The genogram helps to recognize family patterns such as naming patterns, average life span, occupations and medical history. They are popular among family and behavioral therapists to chart behavior or emotional relationships. Information researched for the chart depends on the desired outcome, and a genogram can be simple or complex. Although you can create symbols, a standard format is available for printing and is linked in the Resources section.


Instructions


1. Place the index person's name inside the appropriate gender symbol on the genogram. The symbol for a male is a square, and the symbol for a female is a circle. The "index person" could be yourself or any person who is the subject of the genogram. The symbol for the index person is a double line and should be drawn at the bottom and center of a sheet of unlined paper.








2. Write the father of the index person in a square above and to the left of the index person's name.








3. Write the mother of the index person in a circle above and to the right of the index person's name.


4. Connect the index person's parents. If the parents were married, draw a straight, horizontal line connecting them on the genogram. If they were not married but living together, draw a dashed line. If they weren't married and didn't live together, draw a dash-dot line. Refer to a genogram symbols key for line patterns that represent other relationships, including "one-night stands" and rape or forced relationships.


5. Draw a vertical line connecting the index person to the center of the horizontal line that connects that person's parents.


6. Add relevant symbols depicting the emotional relationships between each parent and the index person. For instance, a single line drawn from the index person to the father represents a plain or normal relationship. A double line represents a close relationship. Consult the genogram symbols key for many line patterns representing emotional relationships.


7. Repeat the process for more generations.

Study For An Investment Broker Exam

Before you can begin working with investments, you must first pass a series of exams. The exam you take is directly related to the type of work you would like to conduct. For example, if you are interested in working within the futures and commodities market, you must pass Series' 3, 30, 31 and 32. Passing these exams is largely dependent upon the amount of time you spend studying.


Instructions








1. Know the investment sector in which you would like to work. Once you have determined your interests, you can begin to gather study materials for the exams necessary for that sector.








2. Go to the American Investment Training website. Find the exams specific to you and read the information provided as well as the frequently asked questions.


3. Give yourself ample studying time. This will ensure that you will not find yourself cramming the night before the exam and is especially important for the larger exams. For example, the American Investment Training website recommends at least 2 months study time in order to pass the Series 7 exam.


4. Review what you have learned. 1 to 2 weeks before your scheduled test date, review everything that you have learned. Not only will this refresh your memory, it is a great way to double check for any subject you may have missed the first time around.

Participate In A Western Undergraduate Exchange

Many students want to go to an out-of-state college, but can't afford the expense. If you are a resident of certain states you may be eligible to attend a college in other states for 150% of the tuition that a resident would pay. The program that oversees this is called Western Undergraduate Exchange or WUE. Follow these steps to learn how it works.








Instructions


1. Start at the Western Undergraduate Exchange Web site. "Click" the "Certifying Office" link.


2. Look to the right and you will see the list of the participating states. "Click" on a state and you will see a list of participating colleges.








3. Review each college to see if reduced tuition is granted for a two-year or four-year program and whether WUE covers your field of study.


4. Decide which schools you are interested in and review the school's Web site or order a catalog from the college.


5. Find out who you must contact to find out apply for reduced WUE tuition rates. You may be able to download a form to apply for WUE; your college advisor can tell you if it should be submitted separately or along with your college application.

Put the word out that you're willing to participate in focus groups or research studies, since these often pay a per-visit stipend that can add up over time if you're participating regularly. Eating plenty of vegetables will keep the weight off of college students.


Eating healthy and living on campus at a college institution are two statements that do not seem to go together. When most people think about food college students eat, they usually think about students eating fatty foods that have little to no nutritional value (thus, this causes the dreaded "freshmen 15"). It will be hard to eat healthy, especially with cheap food literally around every corner in a college town, but it can be done.


Take Time to Eat


One of the most important things you can do to make sure you are eating healthy is to take time to eat. There are many opportunities to grab something quick and eat in a rush, but these things are usually very fatty and unhealthy. Instead of rushing, sit down and eat a healthy meal. Additionally, make sure you are eating three meals per day. While you may be tempted to cut corners on how healthy you eat due to class, you must not do so.








Healthy Eating


College offers a lot of temptations to unhealthy eating. Fried foods are the norm on a college campus, with healthier foods sometimes harder to come by. Nevertheless, healthy food is prevalent on a college campus, and being unable to find it is no excuse for not eating healthy. Instead of eating fried foods, eat grilled or baked foods. Do not drink sweet drinks; instead drink water. Cutting out whole milk completely and replacing it with low fat milk is also a smart way to remain healthy. Be sure you eat plenty of vegetables and fruits as well.


Snacking


If you find yourself hungry between meals, do not wait until meal time. You need your energy to study and focus on your classes and a snack will give you this boost until your next meal. When eating a snack, eat something that will not be fatty for you such as canned fruit. If you are feeling the need to eat something that is normally unhealthy, you may do so but in small doses. For example, if you develop a craving for potato chips, only eat twenty and stop snacking. Other snacks that will not hurt your weight is light yogurt, unsweetened cereal and a small bag of popcorn.


Portions


Knowing when to stop eating is just as important as knowing what is healthy to eat and what is not. When choosing portions, go by the rule of your palm: if it is bigger than your palm, it is too big of a portion. By following this rule in accordance with choosing healthy food, you will remain healthy during your college years.

What is a Scholarhsip?


A scholarship is a grant of money designed to pay for the costs associated with higher education, such as college, graduate school or professional school. Because scholarships are grants, they do not need to be paid back by the student like student loans do. Generally scholarships are meant to be attributed toward the cost of tuition but may sometimes also be put toward room, board, books and other expenses. Scholarships are not normally meant to provide any income beyond a student's higher education expenses.








Types of Scholarships


There are thousands of different scholarships available to assist students seeking higher education each year. These scholarships can be split into two main categories: school-sponsored scholarships and privately sponsored scholarships. School-sponsored scholarships are those that a particular educational institution offers to its incoming students. Common types of school-sponsored scholarships are academic scholarships, which grant money for exceptional student performance; athletic scholarships, which grant money for exceptional athletes; and need-based scholarships, which provide grants for those who may not have the means to pay for college. A privately sponsored scholarship is a grant given to a student by any other individual or organization for any purpose. Often private scholarships have very specific criteria for eligibility, such as that the student is a member of a certain race, religion, gender or field of study, while others have no specific guidelines. Generally a student must have displayed superior performance in some area--such as athletics, academics, volunteer work, essay writing or other extracurricular activity--to secure a private scholarship.


Maintaining Scholarships


Although scholarships are essentially "free money" because they do not need to be paid back, one who receives a scholarship will not necessarily be entitled to that scholarship for her entire college career. Some scholarships are one-time grants that are paid toward a certain year of higher education, while others are recurring grants that are renewed each year a student is in school. For recurring scholarships, a student must often maintain a certain level of performance in order to keep his scholarships. For an academic scholarship, this usually means maintaining a certain grade-point average, while sports scholarships usually need strict attendance and participation in sports competitions.

Look for companies that offer rewards for things such as prompt payment or automatic draft payments. These rewards can stack up and save you thousands in the long run. Sallie Mae or Nelnet has been known to offer loan forgiveness of partial amounts of student loans in exchange for various commitments from the borrower. Look for specials with each loan provider However, do not exchange benefits for higher interest. Avoid consolidating with companies that contact you first, unless those companies are reputable and verifiable. English majors have a number of different career paths to choose from.


If you're considering declaring English as your major or are already pursuing an English degree, you may be wondering what type of job to look for after graduation. Journalist

While a degree in English may not prepare you for a singing career, it can be useful if you're interested in songwriting. Songwriters also rely on language and writing skills to create songs for artists in every genre.


Publisher








Publishers have many job functions, including the acquisition of manuscripts, interacting with writers and editors, the publication of print and digital media and the marketing of these publications. Politician/Elected Official


Politicians must be able to communicate with a wide variety of people and, often, a large number of people at once. Alberta Seniors Homeowners' Grants

Alberta seniors may apply for provincial and municipal grants.


For seniors who own a home in Alberta, Canada, provincial and municipal options lead to government money that they don't have to pay back. According to the Alberta Government's demographic records, the province was home to 385,000 people ages 65 years old and up, as of June 2009. Of those, 67 percent owned property. A government grant can ease the financial strain of homeownership in a person's golden years.

Approximately 142,000 seniors collected Alberta Provincial Benefits in 2010.


Lower income senior homeowners--Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who have lived in the province for at least three months--can receive a monthly stipend from the Alberta government. As of July 2010, to qualify, single seniors cannot make more than $24,500 a year and couples cannot make more than $39,900 combined. Education Property Tax Assistance


Alberta seniors are exempt from education tax increases.


The Alberta government offers a grant to seniors to cover yearly increases to the education portion of their property taxes, based on the property tax increases from the year the applicant turned 65. Degrees In Religious Life

Grants For African American Students

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has always stood by its motto: "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." In the spirit of this sentiment, African American students around the globe are seeking educational opportunities. For those students who require financial aid or would like to explore the possibility of scholarships, there are many grants designed specifically for minorities who intend to have a bright future.


Professional Organizations


There are many professional organizations that dedicate themselves to contributing to the development of African American scholars by providing grants and scholarships. For example, The National Black Nurses Association awards approximately twelve grants to African American students enrolled in a nursing program. The grants vary in amount, ranging from $500 to $2,000. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants also awards grants to students enrolled in an accounting program. HBCU


There are many historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that provide grant opportunities for minority students. Preparation For A Campus Interview

Campus interviews are quick, so be prepared and know your strengths.


Many companies visit college campuses to offer first-round interviews for potential employees. This is an ideal way to get to the next step in the hiring process, but the interviews are often short so that the recruiter can meet a larger number of students. The result is a lot of competition, so it is best to be well prepared so that you will leave an impression on the recruiter.


Instructions


1. Do your research. Never go into an interview without knowing the background of the company. Many interviewers expect you to be familiar with their mission statement, guiding principles and history. It is also important to have a good knowledge of product lines and services. Show that you have an interest in the company to avoid giving the impression that you are simply attending every interview on campus.


2. Know whether the potential employer is in a market with direct competitors, and be aware of how they differentiate themselves. Companies in the same sector often have different corporate values and working environments. Be able to communicate why you believe this company is your best fit.


3. Make a list of specific courses on your transcript that relate to the job description. Providing detailed links between your education and the position will help convince the interviewer that you are the best candidate. Select specific paper topics or projects to discuss; do not just list the name of the course. Remember that the goal is to differentiate yourself from the other students.


4. Prepare for a variety of interview styles. Practice in particular behavior-based and case-style interviews (see Resources). Campus interviews are no longer than 20 minutes, so you do not want to waste time being surprised by the interview style. Answering questions in a confident manner will also impress the interviewer.


5. Print an extra copy of your resume and prepare a separate reference sheet. Presentation is important, so be sure to use the same formatting on both documents. Providing a reference letter from a professor, or former employer is also encouraged at campus interviews.

Learning the English language is a valuable asset in any academic or professional setting.

2. Visit the school library to read up on English lesson study manuals or recreational books written in English. Many school libraries will often have a language section for students interested in learning a second language. If you are just starting out, maybe some basic instructional books on grammar and vocabulary would be most beneficial. If your English level is advanced, you could try your hand at a more complicated storybook.


3. Translate simple short stories from your native language class into English to brush up on your vocabulary and grammar. Depending on your current English skill level, you could take simple paragraphs found in your non-English text books and try to translate them into English. This is an effective way to immerse yourself in the English language.


4. Speak with a teacher or another school representative about study abroad programs to English speaking countries such as the United States or Great Britain. The best way to learn English is to have a conversation with native speakers. Visiting another country will not only help with your English abilities, but you will also learn the local slang that you rarely find in textbooks.


5. Establish a pen-pal system where you regularly write letters in English to another foreigner. To be eligible, you must be a dependent of a soldier on federal active duty, a retiree or a deceased active or retired soldier. Graduate Student Organization Tips

Graduate students have different responsibilities than undergrads.


If you've just graduated with a four-year degree from a university, congratulations. If you've decided to continue your studies with a graduate degree, a few words of caution are advised. Graduate and undergraduate programs can be radically different, and the organization techniques you've used for the past four years may apply in only a limited way now. It's time to step up your game and get super-organized.


Compartmentalize


Arrange the different areas of your life into "compartments." There are a number of good ways to do this. For work-related matters, have a briefcase where you keep resumes, job-hunting books, and similar materials. For schoolwork, keep all necessary items near or around your desk; no more searching all over your room, dorm, or apartment, looking for them when it's study time. If you're responsible for instructing classes, keep teaching materials in a separate folder or basket beside your desk for instant access.


Flex Time


Organizing your schedule as a graduate student is just as important as organizing your stuff. You may have a flexible work, teaching, or job search schedule. Leave even more flexible time in between these appointments for the inevitable snafus that will delay you. For instance, if you have twenty minutes between classes, leave ten minutes to get to your next class. Don't goof off for nineteen minutes and then rush to class in the next sixty seconds. Put more time than you need between job interviews to be able to get to each one on time, without feeling rushed.








Only Once


You may have heard the expression, "look at a piece of paper only once." This means that whenever you have something to deal with on your desk, you only do it once. Either you put it in the appropriate compartment, or you deal with it then and there. You don't put it back into the mess to create more clutter, or put it somewhere you won't find it when you need it. When trying to organize different areas of your life (such as work, school, and teaching), using this rule can free up hours of spare time.


Make a List








As a graduate student, you likely have much more to do than as an undergraduate, and you need to plan accordingly. Make a list that reflects your priorities for the day, week, and month. Work on your list in order of priorities, and don't complete less important tasks before more important ones, even if doing so seems easier in the short term.

Tutor Science

To tutor science, the tutor needs to be very familiar with the area of science that he is tutoring, whether he is tutoring biology, chemistry, physics or another area of science. The tutor also needs to make it clear that science subjects cannot just be memorized and regurgitated. Learning science requires the student to actually learn the concepts as he works through his courses. A student cannot cram for his science exams and expect to be successful by the end of the term, nor can a tutor work this miracle for him.


Instructions


1. Teach science vocabulary terms. Each branch of science has keywords that a student must learn to be successful. When you tutor science, focus on the root words because those will help the student learn decode new vocabulary words in any science class.


2. Review relevant equations. Some branches of science, such as chemistry and physics, rely heavily on certain equations, and the student is not going to be successful until he masters those equations. Make sure you cover those equations until the student knows them by heart.


3. Emphasize that scientific concepts build upon one another. A student cannot study for a science test in one night. Each scientific concept builds upon the next. When you tutor science, stress that the student must keep up with the lessons as they are taught in the classroom so that the tutoring time for a science test is a review rather than learning new information.


4. Introduce general concepts before tackling more specific ones. For example, a student must understand what a biosphere is before she is ready to move on to understanding the cellular level. Start with the big picture and work toward the details.


5. Discuss labs with the student. Tell the student to attend all labs. Labs help the student take the theoretical information they learn in the classroom and apply it in a hands-on way. Make sure that the student understood what he did in the lab, and answer any questions he might have about the lab experiment.


6. Tell the student to look up and learn unfamiliar words. Whenever the student does not know what a word means (whether a scientific term or other word), tell the student to look it up in a dictionary. The student will need to know what the word means in order to understand the lessons he learns in science.


7. Review the student’s notes. Make sure that the student comprehends what he wrote down in his notes (versus just copying information off the board). When you tutor science, ask questions based upon the student’s notes, and explain any of the science concepts that the student does not appear to have grasped.


8. Assign homework. Once you identify areas in which the student needs a deeper understanding, assign some form of homework to help the student reinforce what you covered during a tutoring session. Check the homework and make sure the student grasped the concepts.

Job Description








Junior merchandisers are usually responsible for buying items for one specific department. Junior merchandisers must purchase the highest quality goods at the lowest available price. In order to do this, they must have an understanding of what the store's customers want to purchase, and how much customers are willing to pay for goods. Junior merchandisers must conduct extensive research when deciding what to purchase for the store. Muscle Movement Exercises To Teach Anatomy & Physiology

Many students have a difficult time grasping some of the concepts involved with human anatomy and physiology. These subjects must be taught in a manner in which the student can not only learn from the text, but also from experience.


It is important to incorporate actual movement of muscles so the student associates what is read in the book with how it works on the body. This holds true to the location, action and physiology of the muscle.


Muscle Origin and Insertion Points


One of the toughest parts of human anatomy is the memorization of the origin and insertion points of all the muscles. This can be made easier by teaching the students in a more interactive manner. Usually, the origin point will be located closer to the trunk of the body compared to the insertion point. Therefore, the muscle will pull the insertion point to the origin when the muscle is flexed.


To teach this dynamic, explain to the students the location of a specific muscle, for example, the bicep. Then explain the origin and insertion of this muscle, as well as the action. The bicep muscle originates in two different places on the scapula, then attaches to the radial tuberosity. By flexing the bicep, the forearm is pulled up toward the humerus, therefore drawing the insertion toward the origin of the muscle.


Muscle Physiology


Skeletal muscles are the only type of voluntary muscles in the body. The nervous system sends a message via the neuromuscular junctions to the muscles, telling them to contract.


The physiology of muscles can be taught in a physical manner. Have the class pair up. In each pair, have one student hold a stopwatch, while the other gets ready to perform a variety of muscular tasks. Have the student with the stopwatch ask the other to perform a task involving a single muscle and use the stopwatch to time how long it takes for the other student to perform the task. Though this isn't the most accurate way to measure the amount of time it takes a neuron to send the signal to the muscle, it will help transform what is learned in the text to an actual exercise with the muscle.








Another way to teach students muscle physiology in a more physical sense is to make models of the different fibers that make up a muscle. This will help the students see the normally microscopic parts of the muscle in a way more tangible to the students.


Using Multiple Muscles for One Action


It is important to understand that the muscles of the body have many different functions, but some work together to perform the same action on a specific body part.


This is one of the easier muscle phenomena to teach to students outside the text. For example, hip flexion is caused by a shortening of the quadriceps muscles and a lengthening of the hamstrings muscles. Because of the origin and insertion of both those muscle groups, the combination of the contraction and stretching of the muscles leads to the flexion of the hip joint.








Another way to understand how muscles work together to perform a single action is to perform a workout that requires slow movements, such as yoga. This allows the student to understand and really feel how the muscles are performing to move the body in a particular way.

1. Enroll in a class. Look into Continuing Education programs, offerings by churches and community groups, college classes, language schools and private instruction. Check with your local bookstores and coffee shops to find out if they host foreign language conversation hours. If not, consider starting one.


2. Purchase a good dictionary that shows both English and the language you are studying. Keep a list of new words you come across in class or in conversation.


3. Use index cards to make flashcards with new vocabulary words. Write the word in your native language on one side and the word in the second language on the other. Use adhesive notes or small cards to label everyday items around the house.








4. Set aside time each day to listen to audiotapes and CDs of native speakers. These programs are available for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced conversation, and offer self-paced lessons.


5. Read foreign language magazines and newspapers. Many editions can be found online. Write in a journal in your new language. Rent foreign language films and turn off the sub-titles. Write or email with a pen pal who is a native speaker.


6. Check out intensive learning programs such as those used by the Foreign Service and corporate business. Class meets every night for two to three hours for several weeks to immerse students in the new language.


7. Investigate immersion programs that place you with a family in a foreign country for two weeks to three months. By having few options except to speak in your new language, your skills will improve rapidly.

The minimum training necessary to become a biomedical engineer is a baccalaureate degree. Undergraduate study in biomedical engineering typically requires four years of full-time study to complete. Students in such programs complete coursework in general biology, microbiology, mathematics and physics. Design courses are also featured in most programs, allowing students to gain experience creating their own projects for medical devices and equipment. A small number of associate degree programs in biolmedical engineering are offered in the United States. These courses of study can allow students to work as engineering technicians, assisting full biomedical engineers.


Accreditation


The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredits biomedical engineering programs in the United States. The board began in 1932 as the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, changing its name in 1980. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation has approved the board as a professional accrediting organization for collegiate programs since 1997. As of 2010, approximately 70 colleges and universities in the United States had accredited programs, meaning the schools met curriculum requirements established by the ABET.


Top-Rated Schools


"U.S. News and World Report" compiled a list of the 10 best biomedical engineering training programs in the United States. The Whitaker Institute at Johns Hopkins University ranked at the top of the list. This private, nonsectarian university in Baltimore, Maryland, grants undergraduate and graduate-level degrees in the field and has research institutes devoted to neuro-engineering and computational biology. Two public institutions, the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and the University of California at San Diego tied for second place behind Johns Hopkins.


Advancement


To gain promotions or higher rates of pay, biomedical engineers may choose to pursue advanced training in the field. After earning a bachelor's degree in engineering, professionals can attend master's degree programs, which typically require around two years to complete. Doctorate engineering programs are another option. Some programs require a master's degree for admission, while others will admit students with only a baccalaureate degree. Biomedical engineering doctorate programs usually require a minimum of four years to complete and require students to complete a design research project and a dissertation. A doctoral degree is generally necessary to teach biomedical engineering at the college level.

Grading System Conversions

Although different alpha-numeric systems are used in other countries, the grades are still equivalent to those of the United States.








In the United States, grades are given an alphabetical value: A is excellent, B is good, C is average, D is below average and F is a fail. In other countries, the grading system is recorded differently; however, the grades still hold the same equivalents as U.S. grades.


United Kingdom


The school systems in the United Kingdom grade numerically based on a scale of 1 to 100. They break down their grades into smaller increments, for example: 70 to 100 is an A, 65 to 69 is an A-, 60 to 64 is a B+, 50 to 59 is a B, 45 to 49 is a C+, 40 to 44 is a C and anything below 39 is a failed grade. A grade of C is considered the passing grade.


China


In China, there are two types of grading scales. Both are numerical: one is on a scale from 0 to 100. A grade of 100 to 85 is an A, 75 to 84 is a B, 60 to 74 is a C and anything below 59 is a failed grade. The other scale is from 2 to 5. A grade of 5 is equivalent to an A, 4 is a B, 3 is a C and 2 is an F.


France


The French grading system lies on a scale from 0 to 20. A grade of 14 to 20 is considered an A, 12 to 13.9 is a B+, 11 to 11.9 is a B, 10.5 to 10.9 is a B-, 10.1 to 10.4 is a C+, 10 is a C, 9 to 9.9 is a C-, 8 to 8.9 is a D and anything below 8 is a failed grade.








Australia


Australia does not use an alphabetical or numerical system, but instead uses words as grade descriptors. "High Distinction" is an A+, "Distinction" is an A, "Credit" is a B, "Pass" is a C, "Conceded, Conditional or Compensatory Pass" is a D and F is a failed grade.


Singapore


The Singapore grading system classifies its grades into classes. An A+ grade is "class II," an A grade is "class II i," a B grade is "class II ii," and a C grade is "class III."

What Does Cosigning For A Loan Mean

When you co-sign for a loan, you promise to repay a debt. Many people confuse the role of a co-signer with that of a loan guarantor, but in many states, these two roles work quite differently. However, in the long term, both co-signers and guarantors assume the ultimate responsibility for repaying a loan.


Co-signer Versus Guarantor


When you sign a loan as a guarantor, you promise to repay the debt if the borrower cannot afford to do so. In many states, lenders must attempt to collect the debt from the borrower even if that means taking the borrower to court. State laws often require the lender to exhaust all other avenues before holding the guarantor liable for the debt. When you co-sign on a loan, you and the borrower share the responsibility to repay the debt from the outset. You may strike an informal arrangement with the primary borrower whereby the primary applicant agrees to repay the loan, but from the lender's perspective you are co-applicants and equally responsible for the debt.


Benefits


Parents and guardians often co-sign on student loans for their children because lenders do not approve loans for individuals who have little or no income and no prior credit history. Aside from students, people who have had past credit issues often seek out co-signers because they find themselves unable to obtain new credit. If you co-sign a loan application, your good credit and high income level raises the quality of the application and increases the likelihood of the loan being approved.


Risks


Generally, lenders send loan statements to the mailing address of the primary borrower; notices about late payments and defaults are sent to this same address. Every time you miss a loan payment by more than 30 days, the lender notifies the credit bureaus. Late payments have a negative impact on your credit score. As a co-signer, you may not realize that the primary borrower has defaulted on the loan for several months, by which time your credit score will have plummeted. This makes obtaining new credit much harder, and late fees and interest penalties cause the balance of the delinquent debt to steadily increase over time. You could face court action and wage garnishments if you do not repay the loan.


Home Loans


If you co-sign for a mortgage on a home that you do not own, the lender can foreclose on that home rather than your own home. However, in some states such as California, certain types of loans such as refinances or equity lines of credit are classified as recourse loans. This means that if the lender cannot raise enough money to cover the debt by selling the foreclosed home, the lender can sue the loan signers and co-signers for the remainder of the debt. Therefore, think seriously before you co-sign even a secured loan because the collateral may not prove sufficiently valuable to cover the debt.

Improve Listening Skills For English Learners

Listening as much as possible will help improve your English skills.


Four skills exist in completely learning a language: speaking, reading, writing and listening. Listening requires extensive concentration and practice. Babies listen for a couple years before they are able to effectively communicate their language. Listening is one of the most important skills you can possess in developing full English comprehension. Throughout your learning experience, it`s important to remember why you are learning English. This will increase your drive to succeed and improve your listening skills.


Instructions


1. Watch English content on TV, listen to the radio or watch online videos. Listen closely to develop sentence structure, intonation, interpretation and accent. Hearing the same word frequently can be the best way to develop you English vocabulary. You will eventually be able to imitate what you hear and say it with confidence. Having a radio or TV on in the background can help you learn, even when you are not giving it your full attention.


2. Accept that you are not going to understand everything right away. Don`t worry too much if you don`t understand, even if it`s for a long time. Pay attention to key words. These words will paint a larger picture so you can comprehend the gist of what the person is saying. By listening to the same thing more than once, you will begin to fill in holes that you had not previously filled.


3. Avoid translating into your own language what you hear. When you do, you stop focusing on what the speaker is saying and you start trying to define an individual word.


4. Try to get the general idea of what the people are saying. Don`t over-emphasize understanding every word right away. Most people repeat what they are saying, so you have more than one opportunity to understand what they are saying. Understand this further by paying attention to someone speaking in your native tongue. You should notice them repeating the same point over again.


5. Listen to something that entertains you. For example, decide whether you enjoy the news, movies or TV shows. Also try to gauge whether you are able to better understand people when they are speaking on the radio or on TV. While watching TV, you may become distracted by the images and lose sight of what the people are saying.
