Correct The Ph Of A Lake With A Reading Of Three







As defined by Dictionary.com, "pH [in] chemistry [is] the symbol for the logarithm of the reciprocal of hydrogen ion concentration in gram atoms per liter, used to express the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale of 0 to 14, where less than 7 represents acidity, 7 neutrality, and more than 7 alkalinity." On the pH scale, 0 is the most acidic, and 14 is the most alkaline. Hydrochloric acid is pH0; vinegar is pH3; pure water is pH7; ammonia is pH 10; and lye is pH14. Lakes generally are +/- pH6 to pH8. A pH3 lake is toxic to all fish.

Steps


1. Determine why the lake is extremely acidic. Correcting the pH might be wasted effort if nothing is done about the cause(s). If the lake, for instance, is a victim of acid rain or acid deposition from a near or distant coal-burning electric power generation plant or from the run-off from a strip mine, community action to fix the problem would be needed.


2. Calibrate the portable pH meter according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, put a base with a known pH of 4 in a disposable plastic cup and take a first reading with the glass-tipped electrode. Rinse off the electrode with distilled water. Then put a base with a known pH of 7 in a disposable plastic cup and take a second reading, then rinse the electrode with distilled water. Calibrate the meter's pH scale by these two readings.


3. Raise the pH of the lake by adding a neutralizing base, such as calcium carbonate (CaCO2) or powdered limestone (CaCO3), by aerial application. This is a temporary measure. Long term, unpolluted water entering the lake via rain and streams will raise the pH reading.


4. Make a plan of action for the lake's recovery after the pH has been brought up to a desired level. Many factors in the ecology of a lake affect its pH, and too much or too little of a factor---such as photosynthesis on the one hand and respiration and decomposition on the other---can have an adverse effect on a lake's buffering ability to withstand pH variations.


5. Monitor the lake's pH periodically as you implement the rest of the lake recovery plan.

Write A Scholarship Thankyou Card

Unlike some forms of financial aid, scholarships do not need to be repaid. Students can receive scholarships through their high school, college or university, national organizations or local community organizations. Regardless of the source or the amount of the scholarship money, you should write a thank-you card to the individual or organization providing the funds for the scholarship. Not only does the card express your gratitude, but it also increases the chances that the donor will continue to support students in the future.


Instructions


1. Select a tasteful and simple thank-you card, a piece of personal stationery or a piece of plain stationery. Make sure you have a matching envelope.


2. Select a blue or black pen that will not smear if you are writing the card by hand. The other option is to type the letter on the computer and print it onto your stationery. If you are doing this, format the word processing document to match the size of your stationery.


3. Address your card to the individual who provided the scholarship money. If the scholarship is from an organization, address the letter to the organization as a whole or the scholarship committee.


4. Write an opening paragraph that identifies the scholarship by its exact name and expresses your gratitude for being selected to receive the scholarship.


5. Write at least one paragraph that tells the donor about yourself, in particular your educational accomplishments and educational goals. For example, you could mention that you were a National Merit Scholar and are a first-year student at your college, where you are planning to major in a specific subject of interest. If you have career plans or aspirations, you could list these as well.








6. Write a closing paragraph that reiterates your gratitude. You could also mention some activities that you are able to participate in because you received the scholarship and do not need to work as much. For example, you could write, "Thank you again for your contribution to my education. 7. Proofread the letter, checking for spelling and grammatical errors. If you find errors, fix them in the word processing document or start over on a fresh piece of paper or card if writing by hand.

Use Nursing Theory

Nursing practice is supported by a body of knowledge known as the Nursing Theory. The educational vocation of nurses consists of studying a wide scope of interconnected subject matters that will be applied in the practice setting. Most of this knowledge is based on their learning through experiences, from nursing research, which is considered as a formal source or from any other non-nursing source. The application of a nursing theory varies from one individual to another. Nursing is generally agreed upon as a science that deals with people, the environment and processes powered by an outlook of a state of wholeness in relation to health care. Nurses are encouraged to utilize these theories as they test their beginning and advanced skills in their practice.

1. Review the patient's chart and note his biographical information such as name, age, gender, address, occupation and level of education, and marital status; chief complaints and laboratory results (if available); medications prescribed and their purpose; what is the physician's impression or primary diagnosis. Also note the patient's general appearance (nutritional status, mental alertness: alertness and responsiveness, speech; evidence of pain; body position.


5. Take the patient's vital signs: Temperature using a thermometer, blood pressure (BP Apparatus), and height and weight measurements (tape measure and weighing scale).


6. Go over the data gathered and recognize the patient's immediate and major concerns.


7. Assign a nursing theory to the health concern by reviewing the nursing theories found on a reliable nursing theory book. For example: Data: Patient complained of pain on the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. Guarding of the abdomen noted. Facial grimacing noted. Rated pain 8, in the scale of 1 to 10, 10 as the most painful.


Nursing Theory: According to Martha E. Roger's theory, man is a "unitary human being that is an irreducible, indivisible, pan dimensional energy field identified by pattern and manifesting characteristics that are specific to the whole and which cannot be predicted from knowledge of the parts." The theory also states that health and illness are parts of a continuum. In order to achieve optimum level of functioning, the life processes should be compatible with each other.


With the data above, the patient will not be able to functional optimally unless the health concern is addressed and remedied by intervention.


8. Let the selected theory guide you through the planning and implementation of the nursing care by setting achievable goals based on the priority health concern. Enumerate the appropriate interventions chronologically.

Higher education comes with a price. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students take on debt to finance their education. While some of these debts may be relatively small, others can reach over $100,000. Compounding the difficulty of paying these loans off, these debts are generally immune from statutes of limitations on debt collection and cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. To escape a crushing debt loan, some students relocate to other countries.


Student Loans


In the United States, the vast majority of student loans are underwritten by the government. While being issued a loan by the government has its advantages -- for example, the student will often receive lower rates than he would in the private market -- it also has drawbacks. Unlike private debts, federal debts don't expire and cannot be easily discharged. Also, the federal government can use collection methods unavailable to most private creditors.


Relocation


In an effort to escape their debt burden, many student loan debtors choose to leave the United States and relocate overseas, CNN reports. Of the $60 billion in defaulted student loan payments, between 2 percent and 4 percent is owed by students located overseas. In some cases, the student may relocate overseas to take a higher-paying job. However, in other cases, students will move to another country to avoid creditors seeking repayment of the loan.








Effects


When a person moves overseas, his debt doesn't disappear -- it just becomes more difficult to collect. Seeking payment of a debt in another country is often an expensive, complicated prospect for a debt collector. In addition to the difficulty of negotiating another country's laws, the debt collector may have to hire a local surrogate to collect the debt for him. Also, students who relocate abroad may be more difficult to find, complicating collection.








Alternatives


In lieu of fleeing the country, a student loan debtor has several alternatives. If the debtor faces an unexpected financial obstacle, she may be able to apply for a hardship deferment or forbearance from the government. In addition, she may be able to change the size of his payments so that the life of the loan is extended. By paying less money each month, she has lessened the burden on her paycheck.

Increase A Gmat Score

3. Eliminate the wrong answers from the multiple choices. If you are not sure of the correct choice on the GMAT, eliminate each answer you know is wrong. Know that the more wrong choices you eliminate will increase your chances of answering correctly.








4. Finish the entire GMAT. Remember that failing to complete any part of the GMAT will cause you to have a lower score. If you are not sure of an answer, it is better to make an educated guess because it will lower your score far more to leave an answer blank. GMAT's chief psychometrician, Vice President of Research & Development Dr. Lawrence Rutner, reportedly said, "Random guessing is like shooting yourself in the foot, but leaving answers blank is like shooting yourself in both feet." Do not let your score suffer because you have not completed the whole GMAT. Time yourself while you are taking practice GMAT exams at home, in a training class, or online. If you can finish an entire exam during your prep time, you should be able to complete the real GMAT with ease. Practice tests will also give you the confidence you need to succeed.

Entrance Test For Medical Colleges

You'll need to study a great deal of information in preparation for the MCAT, the standard admission test for medical schools.


Medical colleges and schools use the same standardized entrance test, and it's not an easy one. The Medical College Admission Test, better known as the MCAT, has been offered since 1928 and as of July 2010, was undergoing its fifth revision. To be successful on this test and be accepted into medical college you'll need to study extensively.








Test Basics


Almost all medical colleges require prospective students to take the MCAT prior to entrance into the school. The test is offered at various times from January through September each year by the Association of American Medical Colleges. It tests your knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry, physical sciences and communication techniques such as reading and writing. It is a combination of multiple-choice questions and essay questions. During the test taking process you are allowed three breaks, which much be completed in less than 5 hours and 30 minutes.


Studying


If you're interested in applying to a medical college, you should take the MCAT in your junior year of college, using the end of your sophomore year and the summer before junior year to study. It's recommended that you take this entrance test in the spring, which allows time to retake it prior to entering medical school if you are dissatisfied with your score. It is possible to set a self-study schedule, but other options exist. Some schools offer undergraduate courses for MCAT preparation, and several third-party study guide books and courses can be found.


Test Scores


The MCAT has four basic sections: physical science, verbal reasoning, biological sciences and writing. Of the former three sections, each are scored on a scale from one to 15, with one being the lowest and 15 being the highest. These scores are then added together. The average score is 24, and because competitive schools are looking for a combined score of 30 or above, high test scores are critical to gaining admission. Also required is a passing score on the writing element of the MCAT, which is graded by a person and a computer.


Retaking the MCAT


It is possible to retake the MCAT. It can be taken three times per year, although you cannot be enrolled for two different test dates at the same time. Even though this entrance test can be taken more than once, it's not always advisable to do so, says Cornell University's Career Services Department. Because medical schools have access to your scores from each time the test is taken, you'll have to do well each time. It is also possible to void the test on the day of the exam so it will not be scored. If you do decide to void the test, you'll have to take it again before being accepted into most schools.

Judge A Junior High School Speech Competition

Being a judge for a speech competition among junior high students can be fun but you must have experience in competing in these competitions along with the knowledge of what to look for in order to correctly critique. It can be very rewarding for students that want to improve their skills of drama or acting for future references. The speech competition is judged in various categories and scored from 1 to 5 (5 being the best).

1. Determine which category the student or students are competing in. If it is a solo they may be competing in humorous or dramatic interpretation categories. If there are two they would be competing in duet and if there's more than two it is a group.


2. Look for Eye Contact. If the student is not looking at their audience (you the judge) then they would be scored low. If they have minimum eye contact then they could score a 3 and if they are always aware of their audience then they could score a 5.


3. Consider their body language. Are they acting out their presentation with confidence or is the student slouched over in obvious intimidation. If they are acting out a tv commercial then they should be displaying positive body language to promote their product. If they are reading a story and are not bringing the story to life with actions then they would score a low number. If they seem confident and able to tell a story almost without words then they can score a high number. Also the student cannot turn their back to the audience for most of the speech. This is completely wrong.








4. Judge how well they work with others. If they are working in a duet category or a group then they will be judged on how well they act and work with others in their group. If the duet seems confused and not going anywhere with their story or if one seems to take over then they are not working well as a duet. If the group seem unorganized, not knowing where to stand, bumping into each other, talking over another person's lines then they also didn't work well together and should receive a low score.


5. Score the student's movement. If they are doing a solo or working with others you must score how much or little a person moves. When they speak and their hands tend to move in a way that is distracting from the story then they will be marked down for that. If the opposite happens same thing. The student shoudn't be too stiff and shouldn't move too much.


6. Judge the projection of the voice. If the student speaks too low and you can barely hear them then they need to be marked off and if they are too loud the same thing will happen. The student cannot be overly dramatic and cannot be too insecure since scores will come down.

2. Write down the misspelt word several times. Look up it's definition in the dictionary. Associate it with an image. These exercises will fix the spelling in your mind.

Change Organizational Behavior Of Management

The level of supervision given to employees can be an element of organizational behavior.








Organizational behavior is the way in which individuals within an organization behave. This includes both general employees and managers and day-to-day as well as long-term behavioral characteristics. Elements of organizational behavior might include an organization's aversion to risk; an organization's preference for promoting from within or hiring from external sources; the level of rigidity and formality surrounding its management hierarchy; and the organization's idea development process. Organizational behavior is notoriously hard to change. This is due in part to the fact that organizational behavior is hard to define. It is not written down in a memo somewhere or posted prominently on the company website. Most employees probably are not even consciously aware of the organizational behavior of the company. Additionally, organizational behavior is a product of potentially hundreds or even thousands of employees. This means that changing organizational behavior could require changing hundreds or thousands of individual behaviors.

1. Identify the behaviors you wish to change. What is it that you feel needs adjustment within the organizational behavior of your company? Do you feel the organization is too risk-averse? Does the organization seem to overlook input from mid-level managers? Whatever the behavior is, you must identify it and clearly define it for yourself.


2. Find the incentives underlying the behavior. Almost all behavior is driven by incentives. Some incentives are clearer than others. For example, a production company that pays managers a commission based on number of units shipped gives incentives for managers to ship as many units as possible, perhaps at the expense of quality. Changing that manager's behavior would require changing his incentives. A more subtle incentive is avoiding extra effort. There tends to be a lot of inertia regarding organizational behavior. It is easier to do things the way they have always been done than it is to consciously change behavior.








3. Determine what new behavior you wish to see from management. It's one thing to say "I dislike Behavior X" and another thing entirely to say "I believe Behavior Y is superior to Behavior X." Before you set about doing away with "bad" managerial behavior, you need to have a clear idea of what the new "good" behavior looks like.


4. Reward the "good" behavior. If the new desired organizational behavior for your managers is intended to encourage them to consider more candidates for promotion from within rather than external candidates, consider something as explicit as placing a quota on the number of managerial hires that must come from within the company. This creates an incentive -- filling the quota -- to change the previous behavior. If you wish to see organizational behavior change so that the company more frequently considers input from lower levels of the organization, have employees evaluate their supervisors on how well they do this and include these evaluations in the manager's performance review.


5. Lead by example. Managers look to their senior managers for guidance and example. A senior executive who advocates a new policy but does not visibly follow it himself is sending the message that she does not really care about the new policy. If she doesn't care, why should her subordinates? Executives who fully embrace the new organizational behavior they are promoting are likely to see much greater adoption by those around them.

5. Make an effort to know each distance education learner if you are facilitating an online class. For instance, email each student individually or even call each pupil to ask him about his progress in the distance education course so that you build a personal connection with him.

What Is The Meaning Of Root Word

Most English words are based on foreign words, and Latin and Greek in particular. An English word can be made up of three different parts: the root, a prefix and a suffix.


Roots


The root word is like the root of a plant -- it's the part of the word to which everything else is attached. Becoming familiar with common root words and their meanings will help you understand a number of other words based on those roots, even if you've never seen the word before.








Examples


The root "cred" comes from the Latin word "credere," which means "to believe." So words with this root usually have something to do with belief. For example, "incredulous" means "expressing disbelief," and "credible" means "believable."








Prefixes


Prefixes, such as "dis-" or "anti-," are added to the front of a root to form a new word. The new word will have a different meaning, but one that is related to the original root word.


Suffixes


Suffixes, such as "-ed" or "-able," are added to the end of a root word to form a new word. As with prefixes, adding a suffix changes the meaning from the original word.


Practice


Familiarity with common roots, prefixes and suffixes will make spelling, reading, writing and vocabulary much easier. Websites such as those listed below, as well as numerous root-based vocabulary books, provide exercises to help you improve your understanding.

Minimize Efc

EFC (expected family contribution) is the amount of money that a college student and her parents are expected to contribute to the student's college education. This number is used to calculate the financial aid packages of students. The higher the EFC of a student is, the more money he and his family are expected to contribute to his college education and the less financial aid he will receive. One way to receive more financial aid for college is to minimize EFC. The lower the EFC, the more money a student can receive in financial aid.


Instructions


1. Complete federal income tax forms as early as possible. The earlier that the student and parents complete their taxes, the earlier they will be able to fill out the FAFSA and have the student's EFC calculated.


2. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) early. By doing so the student will be able to to get as much financial aid as possible from the college that she chooses to attend. College financial aid is first-come, first-served. Waiting longer to fill out the FAFSA will decrease the likelihood of receiving as much financial aid as possible. The FAFSA can be filled out as early as the January preceding the start of the school year.


3. Make it the responsibility of the student to pay for college before the parent pays. Having the student use his money to pay for college expenses before their parent chips in lowers the expected family contribution number. Greater weight is given to the student's assets when the EFC is calculated, so having the student use up her resources first before the parents help pay for college costs will minimize EFC.








4. Put money in a 401k or IRA. Money that is in a 401k or IRA is excluded in calculating family EFC. Having more money in a 401k or IRA will minimize EFC by decreasing the amount of money and assets that are used to calculate how much the family should contribute to the student's education. Having less assets will minimize EFC.








5. Make major necessary purchases to lower assets. The more assets that a family has (i.e. money in bank accounts, stocks, equity, etc.) the higher the EFC for that family will be. Making a major purchase such as buying a car will lower a family's assets and minimize EFC.

Train As A Radiologist

A radiologist works with various high-tech imaging equipment to help diagnose medical conditions. To train in this medical specialty, you need an excellent academic record and solid recommendations from your dean or residency director.


Instructions


1. Ask local hospitals whether they have programs that lead to a radiological technician certificate. These programs aren't as intensive as a full 4-year college degree, but they do train you to work with medical imaging technology. Dental hygienist programs also give you some basic radiology training in taking and developing x-rays.


2. Start your radiology training as an undergraduate by finding a research project that lets you use medical imaging. Depending on the size and funding of your university, you may not have access to this equipment. If this is the case, ask your professors if they can put you in touch with a school that will let you use its facilities.


3. Attend a radiology graduate school for further training and coursework. Your intended career path will dictate whether you want try for a Master's, PhD or medical program.


4. Take additional classes in areas that interest you. Specialization in fields such as diagnostic radiology, computerized tomography, gastrointestinal or magnetic resonance imaging can help you market yourself to future employers. Even just general familiarity with the methods can give your resume an extra boost.


5. Finish your classroom and laboratory work and then find an internship for your final semester or year. If you are in a medical program, then you'll probably have to complete a residency at a local hospital before you can get your degree and professional certification.


6. Continue to train as a radiologist once you start working as one. Many industry groups offer conferences and online classes that will help you keep up with new technologies and procedures. Start searching at places like the Radiological Society of North America (see Resources below).

Prepare For The Gre Analogy Questions

The analogy questions on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) test your ability to determine relationships between words. Analogy questions require you to choose the pair of words that most closely matches the relationship between the given terms. Review your vocabulary as well as usual contexts and subtexts of words to prepare for analogy questions.


Instructions


1. Memorize as many of the high-frequency vocabulary words as you can. GRE study guides have a list of these words. Review this list to help build your vocabulary.








2. The common relation types used in the GRE can be found in GRE study guides and online. Common relation types include definition, synonyms, worker and tool. Review these relation types to become familiar with the types of analogy questions you will encounter on the test.


3. Define the relationship of the words in question for yourself before reading the answer choices for an analogy question. Defining the relationship first will help keep you from falling for a trick answer.


4. Eliminate answers that are only loosely related as you read the answer choices. The correct answer to an analogy question will have an equally strong link as the words in question.


5. Return to the words in question if you feel that more than one answer is a match. See if they can be defined in other ways or if there is a more narrow relationship between them. Return to the answer choices after redefining the relationship.








6. Use GRE practice tests and sample analogy questions to become familiar with analogy question types.

Social Work Phd Scholarships

Earning a Ph.D. in Social Work does not mean that you have to saddle yourself with loans that will burden you for decades after you graduate. There are specific scholarships for Social Work grad students that you will not have to pay back. Some are earmarked for the study of specific minority groups. Some are further defined by a focus on particular issue that arises in a specific minority community. If you are currently enrolled as an undergraduate, make an appointment with a financial aid officer on campus to discuss all your grant options after you conduct some preliminary research so that you will know what questions to ask.


National Association of Social Workers Foundation


The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Foundation is the largest organization of service social workers. It offers five different annual scholarships opportunities, each named after a significant person in the field. The NASW supports practice-based research so that graduate work is explicitly connected to helping the communities it studies. One of the scholarships, the Consuelo W. Gosnell Memorial Scholarships, can offer up to 10 awards between $1,000 and $4,000 each year to master's degree candidates who do work with and on American Indian, Alaskan Native, or Latino populations, or those students who work in public and voluntary nonprofit agencies. The NASW also offers money for support to write the dissertation and to create research projects that frame social work practice and policy issues with contemporary social and political issues.


Case Western Reserve University, Wayne State University, and Wellesley College


Case Western Reserve University, Wayne State University, and Wellesley College each offer comprehensive scholarships to support women and minorities' graduate studies expenses. At Case Western, the Lou Stokes Fellowship in Community Development provides tuition scholarships to students already working in community development who want to pursue graduate study. Included in the fellowship is both tuition and a travel stipend so that the student can keep working in the field. Wayne State University offers eight different scholarship opportunities to currently enrolled graduate students. All are granted based on the academic achievement of the student. Some are earmarked for students from urban economically and/or academically disadvantaged backgrounds. Wellesley College, one of the top private women's colleges in the United States, offers 22 different scholarship and fellowship opportunities from their Center for Work & Service, two of which are open to women with undergraduate degrees from any institution. The rest are earmarked for Wellesley graduating seniors and alumnae. Wellesley's Center defines social work broadly to include a range of disciplinary fields.


The American Cancer Society and the National Hemophilia Foundation


Clinically focused social work scholarships are offered by the American Cancer Society and the National Hemophilia Foundation. The American Cancer Society provides a substantial scholarship to doctoral students who conduct research on the social needs of cancer patients and their families. The National Hemophilia Foundation provides scholarship assistance to doctoral students who are licensed to practice as a master's level clinical social worker in a bleeding disorders program. Each state has its own licensing requirements and application process.
