Previously known as the American College Testing assessment, the ACT is used as a college admission standard by colleges and universities across the country. The ACT is designed to demonstrate mastery of knowledge from high school and the ability to undertake college course material. Content








The ACT is designed to measure learning and comprehension of core classes offered in high school. English, math, reading and science are the four main sections included in the ACT. Scoring


Students receive sub-scores for each section and a composite score that reflects an average of all areas. Most colleges use the composite score as the main requirement for admission. Students with scores of at least 18 on English, 22 on Math, 21 on Reading and 24 on Science are more likely to earn a grade point average of 2.0 or above in the first two years of college, according to the ACT website. However, a 2011 study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that while the English and math components of the test indicate potential for college success, the science and reading section scores do not.


Potential Bias


In an article published by the American Physical Society, it was reported that females demonstrate higher academic profiles and yet are two times as likely as males to have lower scores on standardized tests. The format of tests like the ACT gives an advantage to students who are more comfortable with questions in an analytic or multiple-choice format. Uncertain about test questions, men are more comfortable choosing an answer and that can lead to more favorable scores. Bronwyn Coltrane of the Center for Applied Linguistics emphasizes that phrasing may be difficult to understand or uncommon for students whose first language is not English. Additionally, tools that can help students prepare specifically for the test are not uniformly available and therefore, the earned score for some students may not solely reflect knowledge gained from high school classes.


Test Optional Schools








Several colleges across the country have adopted a test optional policy. These institutions believe that admission eligibility should be based upon several indicators, including high school grade point average, reference letters, academic rigor, leadership roles and community service. Test optional schools de-emphasize scores on tests such as the ACT, considering the talents and abilities of each student instead. For example, Gustavus Adolphus College emphasizes that the goal of adopting a test optional admission policy is to accurately consider the potential of each student as a whole.

Taking the NBDE can be stressful, so follow these tips to help you walk into your exam prepared.


The NBDE, or National Board Dental Examinations, are tests given to prospective dentists and dental hygienists who are seeking a license to practice dentistry. They assess the ability to understand basic important information about dentistry and the ability to apply that information in a problem-solving context. By knowing study for these exams, you can create a plan for yourself that will ensure that you will walk into you exam fully prepared and confident.


Instructions


1. Read the NDBE Guide published by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE). This guide can be downloaded free on JCNDE's website, and it will give you information about the format of the test, register for the test and the rules of the test. Familiarizing yourself with this information will not only help you properly register for the test, but it will give you an idea of what to expect on test day, which should reduce anxiety. It also includes sample test questions, so you can familiarize yourself with the format of the questions.


2. Register for your test well in advance. You will have a better chance of obtaining your preferred testing location if you register 60 to 90 days in advance. This will also give you a set time frame in which you have to study.

Where Is The Colossus Of Rhodes

The Rhodes harbor as it appears today.


The Colossus of Rhodes stood more than 2,000 years ago where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea at the entrance of the harbor on the island of Rhodes in Greece.


The Statue


Colossus was 110 feet high and stood on a pedestal posed in a traditional Greek manner. According to Rhodesguide.com, Colossus was constructed in 305 B.C. by the people of Rhodes in the image of the god Helios to commemorate a victory after the siege of Demetrios Poliorketes, successor to Alexander the Great.

It was long believed that Colossus stood in front of the Mandraki harbor straddling the entrance. However, the height of the statue and the width of the harbor makes this theory impossible. According to Rhodesguide.com, recent studies suggest that the statue was constructed farther inland.

In 226 B.C. a strong earthquake hit Rhodes, and the city was badly damaged. The statue broke at the knee, which was its weakest point. Ptolemy III offered to fund all restoration costs, but an oracle who was consulted strongly advised against the reconstruction.

California Residency Law

There are a variety of contexts in which California residency is significant.


California is the most populous state in the union. Any American citizen has the right to establish residency there, but there are a variety of contexts in which California residency is significant. In each context, the requirements for California residency are somewhat different.


Revenue and Tax Code


For state income tax purpose, according to the California Revenue and Tax Code, a California resident is anyone in the state for other than temporary purposes. Being in the state for more than nine months of a tax year creates a rebuttable presumption of residence. Residency also includes anyone domiciled in California, but out of the state for temporary purposes. A person's domicile is the place where he has the most permanent residence and to which he always intends to return.


Temporary Purposes


A person domiciled in California remains a resident under the state tax code when away for temporary purposes. Holding elective or appointive office in the U.S. government, or being employed by someone who does, is considered a temporary purpose. However, anyone out of the state for an uninterrupted 546 consecutive days is considered to be away for other than temporary purposes and may lose residency.


Residency for University of California


The University of California offers taxpayer subsidized, lower tuition rates for in-state residents. Establishing residency for this reduced tuition is a stricter standard than gaining tax liability through state residency under the tax code. To be a resident for UC purposes, a person must establish a physical presence for at least one year and must demonstrate an intent to stay in the state by registering to vote or showing other purposes for being in the state other than education. A person under 24 who does not have a parent domiciled in the state must also be financially independent.








Divorce Residency Requirement


Residency means something else entirely in the context of divorce. To file for a divorce, at least one of the spouses must have been a resident of the state for the six months immediately before filing. Additionally, a divorce can only be filed in a county in which one of the spouses has been a resident for the three months immediately preceding the filing. It is not necessary to have been married in California, however, or for either spouse to have been a California resident at the time of marriage.








Privileges and Immunities


California residency laws have a long history of being controversial and hold a unique place in American legal history. Article IV, section 2 of the U.S. Constitution provides that each state will offer the privileges and immunities of residency within its borders to American citizens residing in other states. In 1941, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a California law that prohibited bringing a non-resident indigent person into the state. A concurring judge found the so-called anti-Okie law in violation of the Privileges and Immunities Clause. In 1999, a majority of the Supreme Court overturned a state law that denied California welfare rates to anyone not in the state for more than a year as a violation of the Clause.

2. Visit your local library or bookstore to get a copy of the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Study Guide. Set aside time each day to review the study guide until you are comfortable completing the worksheet, database and formula action items.


3. Visit the Prometric website to schedule your actual test; Prometric is the independent organization Microsoft uses to conduct application testing worldwide. Use the drop-down box under "Country" to locate your test area. Sign up to take your test online or by telephoning Prometric, and pay the applicable test fees.








4. Take the test at a Prometric center. Remember to enter information during the actual certification test exactly as shown on the test screen. Avoid formatting your responses unless specifically directed to do so. Close dialog boxes, and keep the Office Assistant closed during the test. Notify the test center administrator if you experience computer difficulties.

Memorize The Skeleton

Humans are born with over 300 bones. Throughout growth and childhood, some of those bones combine to make the 206 bones we retain as adults. The largest bone is the femur, which comprises half of a human leg, and the smallest is the stirrup, which is located in the ear. With so many bones, it can be daunting to try to memorize them all. Here are a few tricks to help.


Instructions


1. Study the bones and their purposes. Read biology textbooks, or visit www.getbodysmart.com. There, you can visit an online tutorial of all the bones and their names. You can also click on and learn facts about each of the bones.


2. Draw the bones. Visit www.cln.org/themes/skeletal.html where you can see all the human bones in multiple views, and sketch or trace them on your own to help you remember them.


3. Create flash cards. Once you've completed cards for all the bones, shuffle them up and get a friend or family member to randomly present them to you while you guess their name.


4. Play another matching game. On your diagram of the skeleton, copy all of the bones' names onto sticky notes. Place the notes over or near the bones they correlate to. While the previous step helped you identify the bones, this step helps you identify where the bones are located in the body. It's one thing to know that the stirrup is the name of a bone, it's another to know that it's located in your ear.


5. Buy a skeleton puzzle, such as the Ravensburger Skeleton 200 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle. It helps the user learn the bones as well as where they go.


6. Learn a song about bones, such as the "Hokie Pokie Osteokey" (www.texashste.com/documents/curriculum/a_p/skeletal_system.pdf). During the song, you will point to specific bones in your own body. While it sounds silly, this device is a useful tool of repetition.


7. Create a silly saying for each bone. Lets say, for instance, you want to memorize the scapula--think that "the scapula is long and flat, like a spatula." Or, "I was in thigh high water until FEMA came and helped," (relating Thigh to Fema, which sounds like femur). It might sound odd and, honestly, a little silly, but creating a memory technique like this will work wonders for a particular bone you just can't seem to grasp.


8. Create a slide show presentation. Include information you think others would need to learn the skeletal system. Teaching is one of the best ways of learning.

Memorize And Act From Shakespeare

This article is perhaps the most challenging for many people.


When I devised this particular scenario it took place in my eighth grade English class at my junior high in my hometown.


Part of me has to bask in the accomplishment, part of me still wonders how I even pulled it off. I do not view it as unethical, just an expedient way of memorizing an entire act out of the play by Shakespeare,"The Merchant of Venice".


I pretty much knew what the entire play was about, who the characters were, how they functioned and why. All this we analyzed beyond analysis and got quite terrific at it. I realize now that it was not so much because of the teacher, as it was how adept we were as students to adapt to a virtually impossible task:


we had to memorize an entire act, any act from "The Merchant of Venice". Why we had to do it, then, was beyond me. Without being facetious, it follows that I had to devise a way that was fairly innocuous to be able to pull that feat off.


Here is what I felt that I had to do: I wrote out all the lines of the act that I picked, ultimately memorized them, no problem, believe it or not. However, what is key here is that I would eradicate the words and leave only the punctuation at the end of each line: triggering the entire line in my head! I even asked the teacher prior to the exam if I could have my punctuation sheet,no words, in front of me while taking the exam. She agreed. She even asked me if she could watch. Amazing! I wrote the entire act out without missing one single word while the teacher watched me do so.


All I know is that I made an "A' in that class both for my in-depth analysis of scenes and characters from the old Bard, but also because of my uncanny ability to memorize an entire act and write it out to include all punctuation. I simply read for in-depth knowledge of scenes,themes, how they worked, who the characters were and what their roles were in the entire scheme of the plays or novels that I read, Shakespeare, Chaucer,Moliere,Sartre,Camus - whoever.


Instructions


Memorize an Act from Shakespeare


1. While it is important,probably more important, to have in-depth knowledge of characters, scenes and motives of each, switch gears if it is required of you to go the route of memorization by virtue of rote repeat, until you learn it all.


2. Repeat in your head, repeat the words in writing. Even post notes for yourself in your study area until you can actually remove them, because the words are now in your head. Do the same with the punctuation, perhaps as a priority for it is with the punctuation that will trigger the line memorized.


3. Ask permission of the teacher in question if it is OK to have the punctuation notes, no words out in front of you during the exam. If the wishes she can watch you display your memorization ability.


4. Normally, the crib notes of the punctuation would be in my head anyway; however, the task for myself as an eighth grader was particularly daunting, hence the need for them. I am not certain how many lines, perhaps in excess of eighty to a hundred lines.

Harvard University is one of the most prestigious institutions of collegiate education in the United States. With approximately 25,000 applicants per year, and a minimal 2,000 applicant acceptance rate, Harvard only selects approximately 10 to 15 percent of its applicants. However, there are ways you can expand your academic abilities to the limit, and place emphasis on the strongest aspects evaluated by the Harvard Office of Admissions, so you can better your chances of acceptance.


Instructions


1. Start building your high school transcript early. The courses you take and the grades you make are all important. Harvard usually requires advanced placement (AP) courses that most colleges do not. These courses include, Physics, and Calculus I. Calculus II is also offered at select schools, and it looks exceptionally good on your transcript. You should also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, that has been consistent throughout your high school career.


2. Complete the full application to the best of your ability. Provide accurate and honest personal information, to ensure there are no mistakes or anything that could disqualify or slow down your application review process. Keep all of the application's essay question answers direct, and brief.








3. List all of your notable achievements and accomplishments, whether they are academic or not. In the accomplishments section, you should disclose everything that is commendable. These inserts can provide excellent support for your essays, and supplemental attachments.


4. Provide an effective 250 word essay, which usually entails who you are as a person, aside from academics. The essay should include some of your unique interest, notable future plans, career goals, influences, and any aspirations you may have.


5. Include supplemental materials with your Harvard Supplement. The overall supplement highlights your areas of interest and/or expertise, along a synopsis of the career path you desire to pursue. You also have the option to include an essay, that highlights your notable accomplishments, and supplemental materials, showcasing any visual or performing arts talent you may have. Tying these supplements into your career path predicates that you have goals, which is what the Office of Admissions is looking for.


6. Make sure your teachers can provide excellent evaluations. Teacher evaluations are detailed observations of your character and academic background. These evaluations present the basis of your work ethic, academic quality, and overall productivity as a student.


7. Strive to make at least a 730 on both the critical reading and math sections of the SAT, or at least a 30 on the ACT standardized tests. The writing component for both standardized tests is also required for Harvard admission consideration. Unlike most colleges, three SAT subject tests are also required for those who opt to take the SAT.


8. Get your School Report and Mid-Year reports done promptly, and effectively. Although this information is completed by your school, make sure you submit it to them on time to avoid any possible delays. Read and review all of your information before submitting it with the application, as errors can occur. You'd also want to submit to allow enough time for corrections, if needed.


9. Apply as early as you possibly can. Submit all of your application information and attachments at least 60 days in advance to ensure you meet all of the required deadlines. Therefore, all ACT or SAT standardized testing should be completed by the beginning of the fall semester of your senior year, at the absolute latest.

The History Of Humber College

Humber College is a higher institution of learning in Ontario, Canada. The college is best known for providing a wide range of courses and programs for students, ranging from the culinary arts and cooking to computer science and technology.








Founding


Humber College was founded in 1965. The name of the college came from the Humber River, which was located close to the college campus. The school immediately became accredited as a licensed college in Ontario.


1960s








In 1965, Humber College opened the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. This section of the school allowed students the chance to take classes in science, computers and art.


1990s


In the 1990s, the college began offering on-the-job training. It was the first college in Canada to give students credit for working in their chosen field.


Exchange Program


The exchange program launched in 2004 and sent faculty at Humber College to the Paris Conservatory. As part of the exchange, a professor from Paris would visit the school and teach the students.


2000s


In the 2000s, Humber College added a culinary arts program to the school. The program was the brainchild of French ambassador to Canada Daniel Jouanneau, who visited the college in 2006.


School of Creative & Performing Arts


The School of Creative & Performing Arts was added to the college in 2005. The college allowed students to start their own television station known as TVOntario, which is only viewed on campus.

When people think of using financial aid to fund a college, technical school or university education, they normally think about the funds awarded to the prospective student going only toward the student's tuition. Financial Aid Eligibility


You are eligible to receive federal financial aid if you meet certain requirements. You must be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen. If you want to obtain a subsidized loan, you must demonstrate financial need. You can demonstrate your financial need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).


FAFSA








The FAFSA prompts you to provide the details of your financial situation as well as the financial situation of your parents. After completing the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report, which summarizes the information you provided on your FAFSA. The Student Aid Report also includes your Expected Family Contribution. The amount of financial aid you receive depends, in part, on the amount of money your family will be expected to contribute to your education. It also depends on the amount of money you will need to cover your tuition.


Refund Check


After you have enrolled in an institution of higher education, your financial aid award is applied to your tuition and fees. If you have any amount of the award left, you receive a check. If you do not pick up the check at your school's financial aid office, it probably arrives in the mail. You can cash the check and use the money to rent textbooks. You can also take care of other expenditures that relate to your schooling.


Caution








If you receive a significant amount of money in your financial aid refund check that you will not need to use for educational purposes, you should return the excess money. Do not use the money to throw parties. If you do, you will end up regretting the choice to keep the excess money when you are paying it back years down the line.

Toilet paper and paper towel rolls are usually abundant in the average home. Rather than throwing them away, make bible characters out of them. Choose a story and use craft glue and construction paper and washable crayons or finger paints to create the character's bodies and faces.


Creation Story Book


Make a Creation story book. Create a cover page and a page for each day of creation. Help your toddler by drawing the outlines for the sun moon and stars, the heavens and the earth; plants, creatures of the air and sea, animals and Adam, the first man. Be sure to include the important seventh day of rest. Let him color the pages you have drawn. Use construction paper or card stock for the pages and punch holes along one side. Use small loose-leaf rings in the punched holes to keep it all together.








Milk Jug Bird Feeder


Use an old milk jug or carton to make bird feeder. Recite the verse Luke 12:22--24 (English Standard Version):

Carefully cut a large hole in the side of the jug with box cutter or utility knife allowing enough room for a bird to get in. Let your toddler color the jug with non-washable markers so the ink will not run in the rain. Fill the jug with bird seed and hang with twine or strong string on a tree or post.

Why Learn Anatomy & Physiology

College Application Essay Requirements

College application essays are imperative for admissions into American universities and colleges. With the number of applicants applying to colleges and universities in America increasing every year, college essays play a crucial role in giving a student an edge over the other applicants. Length


The essays are usually one to two pages in length or approximately 700 to 1,000 words. Though most of the colleges are not very specific about the essay length or there is no universally-accepted standards or guidelines for essay length, most of the college essays usually fit within the above mentioned range. There are also colleges which would require essays to be just 500 words in length or at times more than 1000 words. The essay length is not a mandate but just an indication and are there to test the student's ability to express concisely and clearly within length confinements.

The admission committee does not give particular essay topics or themes to test the knowledge of the candidate in the given subject. Formatting and Structure


The essay formatting must be according to the college admission office requirements. If there are no specific instructions given on the same, then the applicants can have their own formatting. The essay must have a title page which must have separated lines, the applicant's name and the title of the paper. The title page should be centered and double-spaced. There would be no instructor or course name as this is not a classwork. The pages should be numbered if there are more than one page and the numbers should be small Roman numerals. The ideal place for the numbers should be the upper right hand corner. The text of the essay must have a 1-inch gap at the top, bottom and sides of the paper. The essays must have a proper introduction, body and conclusion. Essay Content


When given a topic for writing, don't write about your personal achievements and accomplishments. Don't reveal your test scores or any other thing which is not relevant to the essay topic. The content of the essay should be purely based on the theme or the topic given. Deviation from the same would give the admission committee an impression that you have not be diligent enough to follow the basic instructions or are incapable of coming up with relevant content, which would lead to application rejection.

Studying for the GRE Verbal section can be a chore; getting a high score often entails memorizing lots of arcane vocab words. There are flash cards on the market that have high frequency words and their definitions, but to get a higher score you will need to know more than just definitions. Instructions


1. Get a test prep book that has the most frequently tested word on the GRE, and select from that list of GRE words those that you don't know. You can also cull words from your reading, practice tests, and other GRE study guides.


2. On one side of the index card, write just the word in CAPITAL letters. The GRE presents words in caps, and seeing them this way on the cards will help you study.








3. On the back of the card, draw a straight line about half an inch from the top, and another straight line about half an inch from the bottom. In the long skinny box you created at the top, write the definition. In the long skinny box you created at the bottom, break the word up into its roots and write the definitions of the roots. For example, if you chose the word "arachnophobia" you would write arachno=spider and phobia=fear.


4. You still have a blank section in the middle. Divide this into two columns and label them "Synonyms" and "Antonyms." Using the thesaurus, write down three or four synonyms and antonyms apiece in the columns. For some words you may not be able to fill out the back of the card completely, but be as thorough as you can.


5. The secret to doing well on the GRE verbal is knowing groups of words with similar meanings and being able to break apart a word into different roots. Knowing roots will help you if you encounter an unfamiliar word on test day. Good luck studying!

Accreditation is a process through which colleges and universities or programs that can grant college credit are examined and judged to make sure their efforts meet a certain standard of educational quality. In other words, accreditation legitimizes the education you get from accredited schools and programs. Schools that offer distance education can be accredited just like those that don't offer distance courses.








Importance of Accreditation


Accreditation of distance programs and schools assures you that the curriculum will give you the educational opportunity available at a traditional accredited school, even if the curriculum is delivered differently. Additionally, students at accredited distance-based schools can receive financial aid just as traditional students can. If you intend to switch schools or go to graduate school, you can only transfer credits to the new school from an accredited institution. Proper Accreditation


It's important to check out the accrediting authority a school claims. Some schools are making up accrediting agencies. In the United States, the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation are authorities on accrediting agencies. Every year, the U.S. Secretary of Education, as required by law, publishes a list of accrediting agencies that are nationally recognized as authorities that can attest to the worthiness of an institution.


Accrediting Agencies


Six regional agencies are primarily recognized as legitimate accrediting authorities of entire institutions. Each covers schools within a set territory, and each respects the accreditation of schools awarded by all the other agencies. Thus, if one agency accredits, say, a Pennsylvanian school, all the other agencies accept the accreditation, and so, in turn, do other accredited schools. The six agencies are:

Distance Education Accreditation


Besides the regional accrediting agencies, distance-based schools might have been accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. (Some schools with distance programs are mainly traditional, some are a mix and some teach primarily through distance-based programs.) To find out whether a school offering a distance degree is appropriately accredited, you can go to the U.S. Department of Education's website to find the list of accreditation authorities, then check the accreditation agency's website to make sure a school is listed.


International Accreditation


No U.S. government agency has direct authority over setting standards that postsecondary schools should follow--thus the need for accrediting agencies. This is not the case in other countries, which often have a ministry of education or other government agency overseeing curriculum and/or quality control. Additionally, legitimacy in a certain country doesn't mean that a school's degree will be recognized in all countries. Agencies that can be the starting point for researching the legitimacy of a distance-based, non-U.S. school include:
