High School Writing Scholarships

Organizations that offer high school writing scholarships provide students with the opportunity to submit creative writing, short stories and poetry. Some organizations also support students by publishing their work in a regional or national writing magazine or website. Awards range from $100 to $1,500, depending on the organization.


Arkansas Tech University


Arkansas Tech University's Department of English offers an annual creative writing contest to high school seniors attending any high school in the United States. Six awards of up to $1,500 are provided to recipients. Recipients can use the funding to pursue any area of study at Arkansas Tech University. Applicants must submit a copy of a poem, short story, dramatic writing sample or a group of poems or short stories. The deadline for applications is January 15 of each calendar year.


Live Poets Society of New Jersey


The Live Poets Society of New Jersey awards up to $500 in scholarships through its Scholarship Poetry Contest. The contest is open to all high school seniors in the United States. The recipient of the national award has his poetry published and gets the opportunity to compete for online votes for a scholarship award of up to $500. First, second and third runner's up have the opportunity to compete for online votes via the $500 Easterday Poetry award. An Editor's Choice award of $100 is awarded each quarter. Eligible poems must be less than 20 lines, unpublished and written solely by the author. Applicants must not have the poetry entered in another contest at the time of entry in the Scholarship Poetry Contest. Applications are judged based on poetic expression, creativity and originality. Applications are accepted all year long. Submissions are due by June 30, September 30, December 31 and March 31 of each calendar year.








The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards


The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are provided annually to high school students in the United States and Canada. Writing award categories include dramatic writing, journalism, novel writing, personal essay and memoir, poetry and short story. Applicants must register for the contest via the Scholastic Alliance for Young Artists & Writers website and submit their applications according to the guidelines of their nearest Regional Affiliates Office. The amount of the award and application deadlines vary by region.


Sylvia K. Burack Writing Award


The Sylvia K. Burack Writing Award offers a $500 prize to high school students in the United States and Canada. Applicants must enter a 600- to 800-word essay describing a poem, play or work of fiction and discussing how it has influenced or impacted them. In addition to the scholarship award, recipients have their work published. Applications are due by March 31 of each calendar year.

The New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions sets the standards for professional engineer licensing in the state. Select Selflearning Books

Being self-taught in a particular subject can have many advantages in today's world, especially since some companies are depending less upon college degrees and more on real-world knowledge. Whether you want to take up a new hobby, enhance your resume or simply become more well-rounded, selecting the right self-learning books may be the key to increasing your knowledge.


Instructions


1. Pick a specific subject when you select self-learning books. You may want to use self-learning books to learn a new language, increase your knowledge about computer software or simply brush up on basic academic subjects like mathematics or science. Once you have decided on a subject, you can investigate your options and select the right book.


2. Select a self-learning book based upon the current amount of knowledge you have in a subject. For instance, if you are a novice, you might want to find a book designed for beginners, such as the famous "Idiot's Guides," which can be found in most bookstores and libraries. Not only will you be able to browse for books in the comfort of your own home, but you will also be able to read reviews on the various titles, and see if others found them to be useful.

What Does It Mean If Your Loans Go Into Default

Loans are legal contracts between debtors and creditors. By signing, the debtor agrees to pay a certain amount to the creditor per month until the loan is paid off. If the debtor does not pay as agreed, he is considered to have defaulted on the loan. Default has serious consequences for your credit, and in some cases can interfere with other areas of your life. Always contact your creditor immediately if you are having financial trouble so you can make payment arrangements rather than going into default.


Definition


If you do not make a loan payment on the date you agreed to when you signed the loan papers, your loan is in default. Many creditors give borrowers a grace period before officially declaring default. For example, student loan companies may give you up to 120 days to bring your loan current or make payment arrangements before taking collection action. If your loan is in default, your creditor can close your account and begin collection proceedings against you.


Consequences


Going into default can have serious consequences for your credit. Most types of default stay on your credit for five to seven years, depending on your state's laws. In addition, if the debt was secured by property (a home loan or vehicle loan), the creditor can take action to reclaim and resell the property. Creditors who extended unsecured debt to you can sue you and request the court garnish your wages to pay back the debt.


Student Loans


If you do not make payments on your student loans within 270 days of the loan becoming due, you will go into default. Defaulting on student loans is especially problematic because these loans are for large sums of money and because your creditor is the federal government. If you default on your student loans, the default remains on your credit for seven years. In addition, the federal government may seize your income tax refunds or any Social Security benefit payments. The government can also garnish up to 15 percent of your wages. You cannot receive any further federal financial aid, can be barred from entering the Armed Forces and in some cases will not be able to renew a professional license until you repay your student loans in full.


Mortgages


In most cases, mortgage lenders consider the debtor to have gone into default if he hasn't made a mortgage payment in 90 days. However, mortgage lenders can begin foreclosure proceedings if the borrower misses even one payment, so it is best to contact the lender immediately if you are having financial trouble. Once the borrower goes into default, the lender goes to court to get permission to seize and resell the property. This is called foreclosure. Borrowers may be able to avoid foreclosure by making payment arrangements with the lender or by selling the house to cover the cost of the mortgage.

Use Single Quotation Marks







Single quotation marks can be tricky to understand because they are often used incorrectly. Many writers use them improperly for effect, and in Britain, they are sometimes used in place of regular quotation marks. In the U.S., there is only one correct use of single quotation marks: to set off a quote within a quote.


Instructions








1. Look through the source information you are planning to quote. Has that author quoted someone else? If so, this is a good time to use single quotation marks. In this instance, you want to quote the author and whomever he or she has quoted. So you have a quote within a quote.


2. Use the apostrophe key to type single quotation marks.


3. Place a single quotation mark immediately before and after the quote within a quote. But remember that the regular quotation marks must also begin and end. For example: "Mary told her sister 'you look cute' on Halloween," she wrote. This can get a little jumbled when the quote within a quote begins or ends the full quote. For example: "'You look cute,' Mary told her sister on Halloween," she wrote.


4. Place all punctuation inside quotation marks. This goes for single and regular quotation marks. Notice the placement of comas in Step 4.

Applying for an MBA is a competitive process. Admissions officers use the group discussion element to weed out weaker candidates. The pressure is on to contribute something meaningful in a short time. You want the group facilitator to remember your logical arguments and reasoned thinking days later when he is making decisions about which students to accept.








What are they looking for?


MBA interviewers are looking for people who show a wide range of interpersonal and leadership skills, including teamwork, effective communication, logic and reasoning and assertiveness. Others are good listening skills and persuasive techniques. Therefore it is a good idea to practice talking about topics in groups before the group discussion itself and see if you can convey these attributes. Ask some friends and colleagues for some objective feedback and try to hone these skills.


Things to Avoid


Some MBA candidates are so worried about not making an impression that they talk first and talk loudly throughout the discussion. Avoid this type of approach. A more collegiate and group-inclusive approach is preferable. Do not talk over people. Refrain from appointing yourself as chairperson. If the topic chosen for the discussion is a personally sensitive one for you, try to be objective. Never get emotional or show anger in the group.


Handle a Group Discussion


The main objective is to get recognized by the MBA group facilitator for the right reasons. You need to make contributions to the discussion but not with empty ideas. Be prepared for the group discussion by making certain to take a paper and pen in with you and making notes about your ideas. A list of pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages of the discussion points is a sound approach. That way you can chip in with some thoughtful ideas. Make notes of other people's arguments.








Considerations


A group discussion for an MBA can be as short as 30 minutes. With about 10 people in the room--a likely scenario--that equates to an average of three minutes per person. Every word counts, so preparation is crucial. Avoid wordy and overly polite formalities when following up a remark from the group. A simple "I disagree," will suffice. Try to keep eye contact with the whole group instead of talking to only one or two people.

Your first response to this article might me, "Why would I even want to register with the Selective Service?" Well, the answer is that if you're a male U.S. citizen (or male alien living in the U.S.) and are between the ages of 18-25 years old, it is the law that you have to register! If you fit that description, you need to know Register With The Selective Service.


Instructions


1. Register Online:


The easiest way to register for the Selective Service is by going to the Selective Service website, www.sss.gov. There is a link to the site below in the Resources section.


On the main page of the website is a link that allows you to complete the registration form online. You are required to have a valid Social Security number to submit your form.


2. Register At The Post Office:


You can pick up a Selective Service System registration form at any U.S. Post Office. These are usually available in the lobby, but if you don't find them there, ask the postal clerk at the counter for one.


You can fill out the form with the required information, put a stamp on it, and mail it to the Selective Service. If you are living overseas, you may register at any U.S. Embassy or consular office.


3. Check The Box On The FAFSA Form:


A young man can register by checking the appropriate box on the application form for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA form). Check "Register Me" on Box #22 of that form, and the Department of Education will forward the registration information to the Selective Service.


4. Register At High School:


Many high schools also are able to register male students on behalf of the Selective Service. Check with your school to find out if there is a staff member or teacher that has been appointed as a Selective Service Registrar.

Minnesota Sales Tax Law

Minnesota's sales tax generates one-fifth of the state's total tax revenue.


Minnesota is one of 45 states that add a state sales tax to the retail price of purchases. In addition, 21 Minnesota cities and two counties add a local sales tax. The state Department of Revenue collects Minnesota's 6.5 percent sales tax, plus local sales taxes, on all sales of tangible goods except for goods explicitly excluded. Sales of services aren't taxed except for services designated by law as taxable. Minnesota also exempts sales of intangible investments, intangible digital goods like








downloads, real estate and real estate improvements. In 2009, said the state revenue agency, sales taxes generated $5.02 billion, or 21.6 percent of the state's total tax collections,


Exempt Consumer Goods


Minnesota exempts from sales taxes consumer goods deemed basic necessities. Exemptions include food for home consumption, clothing, home heating fuels, prescription drugs and medical devices, caskets and funeral urns. According to a 2010 study of Minnesota's tax structure by the state House of Representatives, 25 other states exempt food but only four others exempt clothing.


Exempt Business Goods


Minnesota exempts from sales tax businesses' purchases of materials and machinery used directly for production of taxable items. Businesses must pay sales tax on purchases of items not used directly in production, such as office furniture and supplies. Businesses that provide nontaxable services, intangible property and home improvements must pay sales tax on the things they buy because they are considered to be the final user of those items. According to the House tax study, the state collects 40 percent of its sales tax revenues on purchases made by businesses.


Services That Are Taxed








Minnesota's sales tax law specifically taxes 10 types of services, said the House tax study. They include lodging, amusements and recreation, parking, dry cleaning and laundry, janitorial and other cleaning, motor vehicle care other than repairs, security and detective services, pet care and boarding, landscaping maintenance and massages except when prescribed by a doctor.


Use Taxes


Businesses and consumers who buy goods out of state that would be taxable if bought in Minnesota are supposed to pay a 6.5 percent use tax on their purchases. Minnesota can't require businesses to collect its sales tax if they have no physical presence in the state. The House tax study estimated that 50 percent to 90 percent of businesses comply with the use tax law, depending on the nature and size of the business. But it said hardly any consumers pay use taxes, and enforcement is all but impossible.


Sales Tax Administration


Retail businesses operating in Minnesota must get a sales tax collection permit from the state Department of Revenue. Operating a retail business that sells taxable items without a sales tax permit is a felony under state law. The revenue agency calls the sales tax a "trust tax" because consumers expect the retailer will forward the collected tax to the state rather than using the money for its own purposes. Retailers that fail to remit sales taxes or file the required sales tax returns could see their sales tax permit revoked, and would face criminal prosecution if they continued operations without a permit. The revenue agency maintains a public online list of retailers whose tax permits are revoked.


Local Sales Taxes


Minnesota law allows cities and counties to levy a local sales tax of up to 1 percent, subject to state legislative approval. The city or county government wanting a local sales tax must pass a tax resolution and then submit for the legislature's approval a detailed proposal laying out the particulars of the tax and how the locality will use the revenue. Local sales taxes are levied on the same types of sales as the state tax. The state collects local sales taxes at the same time that it collects the state tax, deducts an administration fee, and remits the remainder to the taxing jurisdiction quarterly. Local sales taxes are enforced by the state through the same mechanisms as the state sales tax.

Mechanical Drafter Duties

Mechanical drafters are valued members of engineering departments. They create working drawings of mechanical devices, machines and other objects with moving parts. Mechanical drafters perform a variety of duties throughout the course of a workday, some directly related to creating drawings, some tangentially related to the workings of the engineering department. For those interested in a career in mechanical drafting, knowledge of job duties will help you to ascertain whether this is the career for you.


Drafting


First and foremost, it is the responsibility of a mechanical drafter to complete precise, scaled drawings. This often includes not just a single drawing or schematic, but many drawings of the object from several perspectives. Further, mechanical drafters must craft detail drawings of areas that appear ambiguous on a larger drawing, or small areas whose size belies their importance in the overall drawing. As a mechanical drafter, you will be called upon to draw and redraw things as mistakes are caught and revisions come in. Drawings frequently must be revised several times before going to prototype or production.


Tables


Mechanical drafting plans aren't just drawings of the objects. The plans also include textual information about the objects in the drawings. This generally means that drawings have a parts list that includes part names, numbers, prices and materials. This information is essential for field and production workers who construct or assemble the material. Engineering leads rely upon the information in tables to see how close the actual design comes to budget. Further, workers in the ordering department rely upon the drawing to order the necessary number of parts.


Customer Service


Customer service isn't the first thing you think of when you think of mechanical drafting. However, mechanical drafters must provide customer service to other people in their company, as well as to the customer of the product they are designing. Customers may request revisions in the middle of the design process. Alternately, mechanical drafters may need to communicate to customers parts of their design that aren't feasible or cost-effective.


Time Management


Mechanical drafters frequently must balance a number of projects running concurrently. Doing this means mechanical drafters must manage their time effectively to make sure that the most pressing projects get done first. Mechanical drafters must also produce drawings in a timely fashion to make sure that the project comes in under budget. This requires keeping close inventory of time spent on each project.

For some, student loans are a necessity. While you're still in school, the amount you have to pay back later doesn't seem like much, but when you're facing your first bill on an entry-level salary, you'll start to wonder how you'll ever pay it all back. There are now several ways to reduce your rates on student loans, and even your payments, just by taking a couple of hours to do a little research and make some phone calls. Soon you'll be facing a smaller payment each month, and you can look forward to the day you have a zero balance on your loans.


Instructions


1. Research grants and scholarships before looking into financing your education with student loans. There's a lot of money available for students, and some schools will put a cap on how much you can borrow, or will help you find grants to pay for schooling. The less you borrow before leaving school, the less you will have to pay back.


2. Consolidate your loans after graduating. A lot of students have multiple loans with different lenders at different interest rates. Consolidating your loans can reduce the interest rate and your monthly payment. Federally funded student loan consolidators tend to have lower interest rates than private consolidators, so use a debt calculator to compare.








3. Research loan forgiveness programs. One program, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, will forgive loans after 10 years of full-time public service employment, and at least 120 payments. There are also other loan forgiveness programs for members of the military or the Peace Corps, as well as for teachers and medical or legal workers.


4. Look into direct debit repayment. Lenders will often reduce interest rates if they can direct debit your bank account, since this will give them assurance that you'll pay on time every month.


5. Pay off a little more than you owe each month if you can afford it. Lenders will estimate a repayment plan based on a fixed repayment period, so paying a little more each month will reduce your loan faster. You'll also pay less in interest this way.








6. Apply for income-based repayment. Based on your income, lenders will cap monthly payments at below 15 percent of your monthly income. This does increase your interest rate in the long run and adds to the amount of time it takes to pay off your loan, but it will keep your loan manageable for the first couple of years.

1. Learn what IQ means. Intelligence is the raw ability one has to learn or figure out new things, and an Intelligence Quotient puts a quantifiable number on that quality. IQ is also used to classify people. An IQ over 140 means someone is a genius, while the average is between 90 and 110. Someone with an IQ below 70 may be diagnosed as someone who needs special assistance.


2. Convert test scores you’ve earned into an IQ. There are charts available at the "IQ Comparison" website that allow you to translate your SAT score into an IQ. For example, if you scored a 1300 on the SAT, that places your IQ around 131. This is a rough measure but a good way to get an idea of your SAT.


3. Take an IQ test on the "IQ Test" website. These are very popular and fairly accurate. You’ll be asked many questions testing your logic and reasoning and spatial perception. After you’ve answered the last question, the website will simply inform you of your IQ.


4. Apply to a high IQ society and take one of their entrance exams. Organizations such as "Mensa" allow you to register for and take a test to calculate your IQ. These may or may not be administered in person. The test will be quite similar to an online version, however.


5. Evaluate your child to calculate his IQ by visiting a specialist. A child’s IQ is calculated based upon his ability to recognize shapes and changes and their facility for solving simple problems. The child’s test, of course, is adjusted to account for age.

Read Recorder Music Notes







Practice reading recorder music to learn the instrument quickly.


Learning play a recorder is fairly easy. If you know how a recorder works, get sounds from it and read recorder fingering charts to identify the notes you need to play, you will be well on your way to creating music with the instrument.


Instructions


1. Blow into the mouthpiece to let the air produce a tone. There are eight fingering holes on a recorder. The unique combination of covered and uncovered holes produces specific notes. Study a recorder fingering chart to familiarize yourself with the notes each finger combination produces.








2. Memorize the fingering combinations in order to familiarize yourself with the notes that your recorder can play. A recorder fingering chart is a graphic representation of a recorder. The chart uses dark and light circles to show whether to cover or uncover the holes on your recorder to produce specific notes. Purchase a fingering chart in most sheet music stores or find one online.


3. Read simple sheet music to get started. Musical notation for the recorder is the same as it is for any instrument. Music notes are written on a set of horizontal lines and spaces called a music staff (stave). It's the placement of the note on those lines or spaces that tells you what note to play and how long to play it. The combination of note placement on the staff and the type of note it is dictates melody and rhythm.


4. Remember that the notes on the treble clef use the letters FACE for the spaces and the phrase, "Every Good Boy Does Fine" for the lines. The notes above the top line repeat in alphabetical order forward and the notes below the bottom line repeat in alphabetical order backward. The same letters repeat over and over again.


5. Practice playing your recorder daily. By knowing where the notes are on your recorder and where those corresponding notes are on the music staff, with practice you'll be playing recorder like a pro.

Read A Grant Funder'S Rfp

RFP stands for Request For Proposals. Grant funders signal nonprofit service and cultural organizations that they have certain amounts of money designated to pay for programs that meet some specific criteria by publishing an RFP. In effect, an RFP is a public invitation to compete for funding. Knowing read the RFP is key to formatting a request to receive a grant so that it will rise to the top of the pack as a compelling request. It is essential to match the request in your proposal as closely as possible to the funder's core values and current focus. After you find a grant funder's RFP that seems to be right for your organization, here is process the information that is likely to be there.


Instructions


1. Locate a grant funder's RFP using a grants notice board, a listing in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, or on a database of foundations that give grants. (See the links below). Usually, you will find a short one or two sentence summary of what the funder wants to fund, a link to a longer document or to a website, and a deadline by which any request to be considered for funding must be submitted. Go to that longer document.


2. Find a list of the types of organizations that are eligible to apply. The RFP may indicate a limitation to organizations located in a certain state or region. It may have other requirements such as the kinds of client your organization serves, the size of your budget, or it may restrict funding certain types of organizations. If you do not meet the eligibility requirements listed on the RFP, do not spend any more time on this RFP, because your proposal is not even likely to be read, let alone considered favorably for funding.


3. Discover if the funder has an application form or a set of questions that must be addressed in the proposal. This will be listed clearly on the RFP. Make sure that your request for a grant specifically answers each question.


4. Reflect the language that the funder uses to describe their core values, mission, and motivations back by inserting the same phrases in your proposal. Find these key words on the RFP in the description of the purposes for the funding program and by searching the funder's website for the mission and vision statements.


5. Learn how much money will be available in each funded grant. Be sure to submit a carefully prepared, reasonable budget for the project or program you are submitting. Make certain not to ask for more money than the funder is offering. Your budget will be scrutinized by the funder's reviewers to make sure it is adequate, accurate, and appropriate for what you are proposing to accomplish.








6. Include any attachment that the funder lists on the RFP. Usually this will include a list of your organization's board members, the resumes of your key staff, letters of support or endorsement, and a copy of your 501(c)(3) letter from the IRS.


7. Check the RFP for any directions about the font, spacing and length that your request must be.








8. Follow the RFP's guidelines for submit your proposal. Generally, a funder will tell you if they accept online electronic submissions, if they provide an online submission form, or if they want paper copies mailed. If they ask for paper copies they will often say to send several copies- enough for each of the reviewers to have a copy without the additional expense of printing. Do not violate a funder's directions about submit a request to receive a grant. They will not even read submissions that arrive in ways they do not accept.

Explain A 529 Plan

The rising costs of college make planning for tuition a high financial priority for many people. The government offers 529 plans to assist people in saving for future college expenses for themselves or their family members. These plans offer tax advantages, often on both the state and federal levels. With 529 plans, the government considers tuition, room and board, mandatory fees and required supplies to be qualified expenses.








Instructions


1. When explaining 529 plans, define them as college savings plans rather than prepaid tuition plans. Prepaid plans allow you to lock in a certain price for future education costs, while 529 plans provide special accounts for saving for future college expenses.


2. Explain the tax benefits of 529 plans. Money in the account grows free from federal taxes and most state taxes. Explain that as long as you use the money for qualified college expenses, you can take the money out tax-free. Some states also allow you to deduct your contributions on your state income taxes.


3. Explain that a 529 plan is not a single investment. Money in a 529 can be invested in various ways, depending on the options that are offered by the plan, such as stock or bond mutual funds. Point out that some are conservative or aggressive in their investment approach. Also note that the rates of return will vary depending on the investment's performance, and some investments could drop in value.








4. Explain that 529 plans have limits as to how much can be held in the account at any time. These limits vary by state, but according to the Securities and Exchanges Commission, most states have limits above $200,000. Point out that after your account reaches this limit, you cannot contribute any more.


5. Warn about the 10 percent penalty that must be paid on money withdrawn from the account that is not used for qualified educational expenses. For example, if you withdraw $3,000 to pay for a vacation, you would have to pay a $300 penalty.

The graduate school essay, often referred to as the purpose or personal statement, is often the first impression a selection committee has of you. Since many committees have to sift through several graduate school applications, you want your essay to attract attention. The graduate school essay is your chance to talk directly to the graduate selection committee. Use your essay to direct attention to the strong elements of your application, taking focus off any negative aspects.


Instructions








1. Try to get your hands on successful graduate school essays to help you determine what selection committees like to see. However, do not copy any part of an essay. Using even one original phrase from another writer's essay may constitute plagiarism.


2. List all of your accomplishments, interests and experiences. Do this before you start drafting something in paper format.


3. Find an underlying theme or pattern with which to organize your essay.








4. Write in the first person throughout your essay. Use "I" or "my" when discussing your research interests and accomplishments.


5. Discuss your research interests in your essay. Be specific about the topics you want to study while in graduate school. Name faculty with research interests similar to yours.


6. Stay within 500 to 1000 words when finalizing the essay. Another standard is to write no more than two pages.


7. Proofread your essay carefully for problems with punctuation, grammar, spelling and paragraph structure. Essays that have not been adequately proofread leave very poor impressions.


8. Give your essay to a trusted friend or professor to review.


9. Edit your essay, incorporating the feedback you receive from your reviewer.
