For some, getting a jury summons is a chance to perform an important civic responsibility, but for others it may feel like little more than punishment for a crime never committed. While every U.S. citizen, including the President of the United States, can be called to serve, you have the right to appeal for jury excusal from the court. You may write a simple letter citing any special circumstances or valid reasons that might prevent you from serving. Remember though, the list of valid excuses is few and far between. The following guide may help you either temporarily postpone or be excused from jury service.

Instructions

1. Check online for your state's applicable laws for a list of legitimate jury excuses. Keep in mind that all states do not follow the same statues or laws. For example, California exempts breastfeeding mothers from serving up to one year, whereas many other states do not. Some valid reasons for jury excusal include being the primary caregiver to a young child, a change of address outside of your court's jurisdiction or a medical emergency.

2. Call the courthouse phone number listed on your summons. It is a good idea to discuss your circumstances with the clerk first, as he may be able to save you some time by telling you if your excuse is valid or not.

3. Begin typing or neatly handwriting your letter in business letter format. Include the date, your mailing return address and your juror number. Your letter can be informal, but should begin with a declaration of your inability to serve as a juror. For example you may write something as simple as, "I am requesting deferral/excusal from jury service because ..."

4. Explain in detail the reasoning or circumstances that prevent you from serving. If your excuse is only temporary, provide another time in which you would be available to fulfill your jury duty.

5. Include any documentation or proof that validates your excuse along with your letter. Check with the court clerk or your summons for any possible required materials. For example, when citing a change of address, you must provide a personal utility bill, a property tax bill or a copy of your driver's license, which contains the new address.

6. Make a copy of the letter for your own records.

7. Seal your letter in a stamped envelope and mail it the court address provided on your summons.

You have applied for your passport and now you are waiting for your passport to arrive. It seems like it's taking quite awhile. There is a way to track your passport applications. It's important to follow these steps to ensure you receive your passport in time for your trip.

1. To track your passport application you need to go to the following website. http://www.travel.state.gov/

2. Once there click on the link that says checking the status of your passport application. It will take a minimum of 5-7 days before you will be able to track your application. So wait at least that long before you attempt to track it. In some cases it takes up to 10 business days to track.

3. To track your application you will need your last name, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. You will now click the link that says "Securely input your information here to check the status of your passport application."

4. Input your information and press submit. You should then see the information about your passport. You may also see a screen that says your passport application was not found. If you see that screen read all the information before deciding if you need to contact the National Passport Information Center.

5. If you are traveling within the next week and still do not have your passport contact the National Passport Information Center. When speaking to a representative there make sure you keep a note of who you spoke to and what you were told. You may have to call back and it's better to have a record of your previous calls.

3. Obtain an application form from the admissions office at the college of your choice. Most schools also accept online applications. Fill out the application, marking "International student" when prompted and giving evidence of your right to be in America.

4. Locate an evaluation agency to have your credits evaluated. The agency needs to be a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. The university to which you are applying should direct you to one that meets their needs. When your credits are evaluated, the school will be able to determine that you meet their coursework admissions requirements.

5. Submit all coursework documents, essays, recommendations and test scores to the admissions office. Wait for your acceptance. You may have to file additional visa paperwork after you have been accepted.

Minnesota Estate Tax Law

Estate

Minnesota taxes all the assets of a decedent before the assets are distributed to the decedent's beneficiaries. This tax is called an estate tax. An estate tax differs from an inheritance tax, which is a tax on the beneficiaries once they receive the assets. Minnesota does not have an inheritance tax unless a Minnesota taxpayer inherits an individual retirement account (IRA). In that case, the taxpayer may have to pay for the decedent's pre-tax contributions.

Filing

The estate must file Form M706 if the decedent resided in Minnesota at the time of her death. In general, estates valued over $1 million are required to file for the Minnesota estate tax.

Deadline

The due date for filing Form M706 and paying the estate tax is nine months after the estate owner's death. For decedents who died after December 31, 2008, an automatic six-month extension is granted, which extends the deadline to 15 months.

Payment

Payment can be made electronically or mailed with a check payable to Minnesota Revenue. The estate can make payments in installments if the Internal Revenue Service has granted an extension to pay the federal estate tax, if the Minnesota estate tax is more than $5,000, if the executor sends a letter within nine months of the estate holder's death and if the installments are in equal amounts. Interest applies to the amount due when payments are made in installments.

Penalties

Penalties will apply to the estate for late payment, late filing, failure to file or filing a fraudulent return. For late payments, a 6 percent penalty will accrue on the unpaid tax. If you file Form M706 late, a 5 percent late fee will apply to the unpaid tax. If you fail to file or file a fraudulent return, you can be held criminally liable.

The U S Government School Grants

USDA school lunch programs are some of the largest U.S. government school grants.

Public schools teach the majority of America's children. The U.S. government helps support these public services with grant programs to pay for school lunches, fresher school food and to upgrade Internet services at schools and libraries. The U.S. government also provides school grants financed by public timber sales to the communities where public forestlands are harvested.

National School Lunch Program Grants

One of the larger U.S. government grants for schools is offered by the Department of Agriculture. The National School Lunch Program has provided grants to local school districts since 1946. This program is intended to help reduce the costs to students of purchasing a school lunch, especially for low-income populations. Many students qualify for further assistance from this grant program, including free lunches and breakfasts, if they meet certain income limits. Both public and nonprofit private schools are eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grants

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is similar to the National School Lunch Program, and is also administered by the Department of Agriculture. Qualifying elementary schools can receive funding to help provide healthier snack and lunch options to their students. The goal of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is to expand the access of children in low-income families to fresh produce outside of normal school lunch programs. To be eligible for this opportunity, the school must serve a low-income neighborhood and elementary students. Schools are selected by state agencies to participate.

Forest Service School Grants

Another major source of U.S. Government grant funding for schools comes from the United States Forest Service. The Forest Service Schools Grant to States helps improve and fund the operations of schools in rural communities where the Forest Service operates. The goal of this program is to return some of the federal benefit from the sale of publicly owned timber to local communities where harvesting takes place. The money provided to states under this grant goes directly to counties and school districts, and funds various projects including school, road and environmental improvements.

Community Connect Grant Program

In recent years, the U.S. Government has decided to provide grants to schools to help improve their Internet and technology infrastructure. The Community Connect Grant Program is an opportunity from the USDA that finances upgrades to critical community facilities like schools and libraries. This program's focus is on connecting these public services with broadband Internet infrastructure, with the intention of increasing broadband Internet access across the rural United States. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and public agencies, private businesses or nonprofits who operate Internet infrastructure are eligible to apply.

Teach Phonics

Do you want to teach your preschooler read? A good way to start is through phonics. In phonics, you teach letter sounds a few letters at a time and as the child learns those letters, you add the sounds of more letters to the mix. Before you know it, you child can sound out whole sentences and is well on his way to reading. This technique is not exclusively for younger children. A number of older children are struggling with reading because they never learned phonics. This technique can be used with them to make them much more fluent in reading and give them confidence.

Instructions

1. Start by teaching three or four consonant sounds and a short vowel such as an "a." Let's say you are teaching the consonants sounds for "n", "r", "s", and "t". Put the letters on three by five cards as well as any words that can be made using those four letters: "ran," "rat," "sat," "has," "tan." Go over the sounds with the child using the letter cards and then show them the word cards. Help him sound out the words and when possible, show the child pictures of what the word represents so he can make the connection between the word and the object. Do not combine the consonants to to form complex sounds at the stage.

2. Teach your child a few sight words. Sight words are words that don't really follow the rules of phonics but are needed to make sentences such as "a" and "the." Add a few additional words to the sight word list as needed so you can make understandable sentences.

3. Make sentences using the words your child can now sound out and the short vowel such as "The tan man sat." Go over those sentences with the child. In addition, go to the library and search for books that go over the sounds of the letters you've already done for additional reinforcement. The books you find will also guide you on what letters might be good to teach next.

4. Practice the beginning letters for a day or so. Then gradually add additional letters and vowels to the collection of sounds your child knows. Do not add more than two or three sounds a day. As your child learns more sounds the amount she can read and sound out will increase.

5. Teach all the single sound consonants and short vowels first. Be careful of the consonants that have for than one sound such as "c" and "g" (cat makes one sound and cigar makes another). Teach only one of the sounds at a time.

6. Add in consonant blends and long vowels after your child knows the consonants and short vowels. Make sure you teach the rules for the long vowels so your child and distinguish them easily from the short vowels (such as an "e" at the end of the word makes the vowel long as in "cape").

2. Write your thesis statement. This is one detailed sentence that states your main argument. It is typically used as the final sentence of the opening paragraph of your persuasive essay. Write your thesis statement at the top of your persuasive essay outline.

3. List two to four statements that support your thesis statement. These are the main arguments of your persuasive essay.

4. Write an example or fact under each argument that helps you prove that the argument statement is true.

5. Consider the opposing statement for each of your argument statements. What might someone say in disagreement with the statement to try to prove you wrong? Write the opposing statement under each argument statement, labeled "opposing statement."

6. Add a rebuttal to each opposing statement that you have written under each argument statement. This is the information you would use to defend your persuasive essay thesis against the opposing statement.

7. Congratulations! You have created a persuasive essay outline! Use your thesis to write the first paragraph. Write a paragraph for each argument statement, including the opposing statement and rebuttal. Then finish with a conclusion paragraph.

Defaulted student loans have serious consequences for an individual as they are not allowed to be discharged in bankruptcy court like other debts. The only exclusions to this rule is if a person either dies or becomes permanently disabled. Even private student loans are not dischargeable even though they are very similar to personal loans. But, if the situation arises, how does a person know whom to pay when various collection companies are calling and sending letters? The following provides some information about pay defaulted student loans.

Instructions

1. Look through your student loan information or files to determine if your defaulted loans are private, federal or both. Skim over letters and look for wording, such as "FFELP" or "signature." FFELP are federal loans through the government. Signature loans are private educational loans that are backed by banks or other private lenders. Generally, companies like Sallie Mae and American Educational Services are the servicers of the loans. They are the caretakers so to speak, for the government and banks.

2. Take care of federal defaulted student loans by either calling the U.S. Department of Education (ED.gov) or by mailing in a normal payment to the loan holder's address. Visiting ED.gov will also allow you to retrieve the mailing address of the loan holder to pay defaulted student loans by mail.

3. If the servicer of the loans is private or if you have a signature loan, write a letter to the servicer that previously handled your defaulted student loans. Include your name and account number that pertains to your debt. Ask your servicer who the guarantor is for the loans. The guarantor gave you the money. Sometimes a servicer also lends money, so don't be surprised if you get a letter back that states that. Explain your financial situation as to why you defaulted on the student loans. Tell the lender that you want to start paying the debt, but do not know whom to pay because of the various companies that are contacting you. Include any other information that you deem important. Mail the letter certified by receipt so that you have proof of correspondence with the lender.

4. Contact the guarantor to make payment arrangements on defaulted student loans if the servicer does not handle your accounts anymore.

In 2007, the average GRE score for both masters and doctorate applicants for verbal was 572, qualitative test scores averaged at 775, and writing scores were averaged to a 4. GPA averages were 3.0. There is no preference in which the test is taken. For international students, the TOEFL is a test that needs to be taken to ensure that the applicant has an adequate command of spoken and written English. The TOEFL does not have to be taken if the international student has an undergraduate from an English-speaking university and the coursework taken was taught and recorded in English.

3. Fill out the application in full. Applications are available online. An application requires a $105 application fee as well as a resume and a Statement of Purpose. A Statement of Purpose lays out why you want to pursue your degree and what you hope to do with it. A Statement of Purpose should be unique to you and should also make the school want to accept you. In many cases, after looking at all the other information in an application, the Statement of Purpose can help you to stand out. Harvard also requires at least one reference, with three being preferable. References should be someone who knows you professionally and can vouch for your abilities in the field.

4. Send in all required paperwork by the deadline listed on the website. For the school year that begins in 2011, applications must be received by December 3, 2010. Applications will be available online starting in September of 2010. Make sure that the application fee of $105 is paid by credit card at the same time to ensure that your application has proper consideration.

Law Clerk Salaries

Rather than immediately joining the ranks of practicing lawyers, many law school graduates choose to work as law clerks, or research assistants, in aid of federal judges. The average salary for these positions is much lower than the average of lawyers' earnings, at $37,552 annually, as of December 2010, according to CB Salary. Entry-Level and Non-Law Earnings

Holders of a J.D. may expect an average salary of $56,957 the year after they leave college, as of December 2010, according to PayScale. This figure represents all holders of juris doctorate degrees, whether they're cleared to practice law by their state's bar association or simply using their law degree outside of the profession. With five to nine years of experience in their field, all J.D. holders earn average salaries of $89,590. Those actively practicing law are likely to earn more than these broad, median figures.

The American Institute of Architects and the American Architectural Foundation co-sponsor the Minority Disadvantaged Scholarship Program, which is designed to increase the number of minority students pursuing degrees in architecture. The program provides scholarships to minority graduating high school seniors, college freshmen and community college students who plan to pursue a professional bachelor's or master's degree in architecture at an NAAB-accredited school. The program awards up to 20 scholarships annually, and individual award amounts vary based on the availability of funds.

Center for Architecture Foundation Scholarships

The Center for Architecture Foundation administers two scholarship programs for architecture students who are enrolled in NAAB-accredited programs in New York State. The Eleanor Allwork Scholarship awards scholarships of $7,500 and an additional honors scholarship of $10,000 to deserving undergraduates. The Center for Architecture Foundation Design Scholarship is a $5,000 award for undergraduates who are pursuing degrees in architecture or a related field. Both scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need and applicants must be nominated by the dean or chair of their respective school.

Job Description

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, licensed practical nurses work in health care settings to care for patients who are sick or injured. NAPNES Basics

NAPNES designed online courses that allow students to learn most effectively. Its online courses are mainly untimed and allow students to take breaks between lessons. Though the lessons aren't timed, the tests after the lessons and the end of the course are. The courses are an easy way to earn contact hours. Generally, its courses count as one, two, three, or four contact hours needed for licensing renewal.

Courses

NAPNES offers several courses online for those interested in accumulating continuing education credits. As of April 2010, these courses include, pressure ulcer prevention and treatment, intensive review of pharmacology, the new food pyramid, intimate partner violence and dementia. It also offers elder abuse, attitude impact on pain assessment and pain management guidelines. The costs of the courses range from $2 to $35 and have between four and 18 lessons.

Salary Potential

Salaries for licensed practical nurses are lower than those of registered nurses, but they still have a great salary potential. LPNs with one to four years of experience have a salary range of $23,900 to $42,400, those with five to nine years of experience have a salary range of $37,300 to $46,900 and those with 10 to 19 years of experience have a salary range of $35,000 to $56,000, according to PayScale.com. LPNs with 20 plus years of experience have a salary range of $40,000 to $54,000 as of April 2010.

2. Stay well-hydrated. Your voice may get tired, so you will want to drink plenty of water.

3. Be enthusiastic when you greet your tour group. Make eye contact and try to learn their names.

4. Use humor to keep people interested.

5. Read and interpret your guests' body language. This is extremely important. Some people want detailed knowledge, others just want an overview. If your guests seem restless, or if they are yawning, you are probably giving out too much information.

6. Ask if people have questions.

7. Pace your tour, especially if it's a long one. Ask if people need rest room breaks.

8. At the end of your tour, thank your guests and ask if they need information about local restaurants or other attractions.
