Meet People In College

You got into college, but most of your friends are probably not with you. That's okay, you can meet new people that will share your college experience with you.


Instructions


1. Meet your roommate. It's a good idea to try to be friends with your roommate first. You'll be living with them and you need to start off on good terms. While unpacking, get to know each other. Set some ground rules. Afterward, explore the dorm together. It's easier to meet new people when you're with someone else.


2. Meet your neighbors. They'll be great to have around so that you don't have to go down the the cafeteria by yourself, find out about a cool party or event or spend a night in the dorm having a movie night. Plus, when you're studying, you'll have a better chance of getting them to turn the music down if it's too loud.








3. Meet your RA. Your resident adviser (RA) is the first person you go to if you have a problem or conflict. It's a good idea to get to know them. Ask them to go to dinner with you and your roommate.








4. Leave your door open. If you're studying in your dorm or just watching TV, try keeping your door open. This makes you seem more inviting and sometimes people will pop in to talk to you.


5. Be aware that people generally tend to sit in the same spots in classes. Because of this, you'll be sitting by the same people all semester. It's a good idea to talk to them when you can. These are the people you'll be asking for notes when you miss class and forming study groups with when the class becomes overwhelming.


6. Join clubs and organizations. Many colleges and universities have a student live night. These are meant for students to learn about all the different clubs and organizations on campus. You can talk to a few members and learn what they are all about. There is a club out there for everyone. Look for things that you enjoy or that you always wanted to try. These are people that share the same interests so you'll have a good shot at getting along with them.


7. Get to know your fellow employees. If you have a job, getting to know the other people that work there is also important. You'll be associating with them during breaks and off hours. Plus, if you need to find someone to cover your shift, it can only be easier if you're on good terms with the fellow workers.


8. Go to school events. It might be the big game, a cultural festival, a play or even a open-campus lecture. Wherever your interests lie, you'll be able to meet people at the events. Just make casual conversation about what's going on.


9. Study in the library. If you choose studying in the library over your dorm, you'll have a better shot at meeting someone. Sit at a table and start studying. Take breaks once in a while and get up to stretch your legs. This is a good time to talk to people who are doing the same thing.


10. Stay out of your dorm between classes. If you have an hour or two between classes, consider sitting outside if the weather is nice. There's just something about being outside in the sun that makes people easier to talk to.


11. Try chatting with the person in front of or behind you when you get coffee. It will make the line go faster and if you don't have anyone to sit with, you can sit together and continue your conversation. This person may only be someone you only talk to once or even your coffee buddy, but you never know. They might become your best friend.

Survive The Medical School Admissions Process

Medical school admissions is an arduous, nerve-wracking process that can take up to a year. It involves dozens of letters, essays, applications and recommendations. After the MCATS, hopefully you'll receive an invitation to interview. Survive the medical school admission process with a few helpful tips.


Instructions


1. Arrange to travel the day before and spend the night, unless you live very close to the school where you are interviewing. Many schools offer overnight housing or have programs in which current students host candidates.


2. Get a haircut and decide what you're wearing to the interview one week before your scheduled appointment. Inspect and try on a new suit or new shoes.


3. Shake hands correctly. Make sure that the full of your hand from your thumb to your index finger meets the same area of the other person's hand. A handshake measures your confidence.


4. Know your undergrad curriculum, performance and MCAT scores. Be prepared for interviewers to ask about academic strengths and weaknesses.


5. Plan to meet with a panel of interviewers or to have three separate meetings: one each with a physician, professor and someone from administration. Individual notes regarding the interview are compiled and presented later at a candidates meeting.


6. Take along copies of your resume, any important documents and letters of recommendations in a flat large envelope. These things should all be in your file, but a back-up copy is a good idea.


7. Follow up with hand-written thank you notes to the Dean, the Admissions Office staff, your interviewers and your student host. These small things makes a candidate stand out as an ideal choice.

Instructions


1. Select, and consistently follow, a standard letter format. Use a business letter style for the composition of your letter. 2. Keep your letter concise. If your letter is long and rambling, the selection committee likely will not read it in its entirety. Stick to the point and keep it simple.








3. Open your letter with as specific a salutation as possible. If you know the specific individual who is in charge of evaluating applications, address it to this person. If not, address the letter to the selection committee and use a standard, "Dear Sir or Madam:" salutation.


4. Express your interest. Explain specifically what you are interested in. If you are applying for a specific major, or desirous of enrolling in a certain graduate major, explain this in your initial paragraph.


5. Provide basic details about your previous education experience. When selecting candidates for a graduate program, selection committees commonly look for individuals with specific previous education experience. List details about your previous education experience that you feel have helped prepare you for the program for which you are applying.


6. Explain why you feel that you are a qualified candidate. Devote only a sentence or two to this section of your letter. Your application materials will explain your basic qualifications, so you do not need too many details. Use this as an opportunity to highlight specific things.


7. List the materials you have enclosed in your application. In your final paragraph, state what materials you have placed in your application packet.


8. Use a standard, "Yours Truly," or, "Sincerely" conclusion to your letter.


9. Print your letter on quality paper. By investing time and money into printing your letter on thick, high-quality paper, you add professionalism to your application materials.

1. Do not impose on a professor.


Calculate the best time to ask someone for a letter of recommendation. Never approach a professor casually after class or randomly stop by his office. 2. Tell a professor why you are coming.

Instructions


1. Decide what system of shorthand that you would like to use. The Gregg system of shorthand is the most popular among business people and is one example of symbol-based shorthand. The other types of shorthand are sound-based and alphabetic; many other forms are hybrids of the three main categories.


2. Enroll in an online course that teaches the form of shorthand you would like to learn (see Resources). Look for one that provides detailed lessons, practices audio dictation and provides a certificate of completion.


3. Make a flashcard for each symbol and its corresponding sound. Drill the flashcards a few times a day.


4. Practice writing in your journal in shorthand until you are fairly comfortable using the symbols.


5. Practice taking dictation using the audio clips and exercises provided by your shorthand course and by writing the lyrics to slow songs in shorthand. For extra practice, take dictation from the television.

Apply To Okanagan College

Lake Okanagan provides a beautiful backdrop for the campus.

1. Visit the Okanagan College website to determine program to which you would like to apply. The college offers programs in arts, business, computer science, engineering technologies, health and social development and education, among other fields. 2. Verify application deadline. Your application must be received on time to be considered for admission.








3. Check age requirements. For adult basic education programs, you must be 19 or older or be 18 and out of school for at least 12 months or have completed 12th grade. Applicants for an associate's or bachelor's degree, diploma programs or the health and social development program must be 18 or a secondary school graduate or its equivalent. For vocational and trade programs, you must be at least 16.


4. Ensure you meet citizenship and immigration requirements. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, be a permanent resident, hold a valid study permit issued by a Canada immigration center or hold a valid visitor's permit and intend to study in Canada for six months or less.


5. Complete any entrance testing required for the program you are seeking to join. Tests may include English language testing, skills assessment and subject matter testing.








6. Determine whether you are applying as a regular applicant or under another category. Regular applicants are high school seniors or recent high school graduates. Other categories include mature applicant, transfer student, unclassified student, meaning you do not intend to seek a degree or diploma, or visiting student.


7. Request an official, sealed transcript from any high schools and colleges that you have attended. Transcripts must be issued within six months of submitting your application. If you are submitting an out-of-province post-secondary transcript, you will be required to pay a fee.


8. Apply to Okanagan College using its online application. You also may apply using a paper application; however, you will be required to submit an application fee. Determine Student Aid Report Scores








Student Aid Report (SAR) scores are returned to applicants who fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The SAR is used by colleges and universities to which an applicant is applying in determining the financial aid award upon acceptance. The schools that receive the SAR scores are selected when the applicant fills out the FAFSA.


Instructions


1. Expect the SAR to be delivered after you submit the application. If the FAFSA was filed on-line, an email notification will be sent directing the student on view the FAFSA. If no email address was filed or the FAFSA was filled out on paper and mailed, a report will be sent via mail.


2. Check the SAR later by going to the official website of the FAFSA. Regardless of whether or not an SAR has been received in the mail, the SAR can be reviewed on-line.


3. Click "View and Print Your Student Aid Report" on the main FAFSA web page. Select the school year for which it was filed, which will be one year ahead of when you filed it. For instance, a student would file the FAFSA in January of the 2014-2015 school year to determine financial aid for the 2015-2016 school year. Click "Next."


4. Fill in your personal information, including your Social Security Number (SSN), and click "Submit." Make sure to have your PIN ready. If you don't know what your PIN is, click " I Forgot/Don't Know My PIN," a link in smaller text located directly beside the question "What is your PIN?" You will create a new PIN, which you will receive by email in a few days.


5. Make sure to select the option to view the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), if viewing the SAR on-line. The SAR "score" is the EFC. The EFC indicates to the school how much money the family is expected to contribute to the student's education. This will determine the availability of government grant money, as grants are usually need-based and not based in academic merit.








6. Print the document by selecting the option on the SAR screen. Bring the SAR including the EFC to your financial aid adviser with any questions or concerns you may have. Schools can receive the FASFA electronically. The receiving schools are usually selected in the application process. According to FAFSA, some schools outside the United States may need to be mailed a printed copy of the report.

Accept Or Decline Invitations In French

If a French speaker has invited to you to attend a special event or party, and you would like to respond to her invitation in French, there are several key phrases you could use to either accept or decline the invitation.


Instructions








1. Say, "Avec plaisir" to tell someone that you would love to go to the event or party that he invited to you to attend. You can also say, "D'accord," which means "OK" if you're speaking to a close friend or if you'd like to accept the invitation in a less formal manner.








2. Respond by saying, "Peut-etre," if you want to say, "Maybe." If you're not sure yet if you can make it, you can also answer, "Je ne sais pas encore," which means, "I don't know yet."


3. Answer, "Je ne peux pas" to say that you can't come. To make it more polite, add, "Je suis desole," which means, "I'm sorry," to your response.


4. Tell the person who invited you, "Je suis desole, mais j'ai deja quelque chose de prevu" to tell her, "I'm sorry, but I already have something going on."

Master'S Programs In Bass Trombone Performance

Finding the right bass trombone master's program requires some research.


Finding the right fit when it comes to education of any sort is critical. The right environment, in addition to the right master's education focus, can make a dramatic difference in the overall educational experience. This is particularly true of those pursuing a musical education, as a master's degree in performance arts provides learning opportunities not available in a more traditional master's program in a school of music. These tend to be more scholastic in teaching methods and curriculum than a master's program emphasizing the performing arts.


Course requirements

Undergraduate and graduate colleges often require personal statements from students who are applying. The personal statement gives applicants the chance to display personal and professional qualities to college admissions counselors. As many college programs are competitive, especially graduate programs, the personal statement can help you stand out from other qualified candidates.


Instructions


1. Review the questions, if any, asked on the college application. Detail the information about your personal life that you want to include in your statement. Organize the information in terms of what is most important for college admissions counselors to know and what is most relevant. Write down obstacles you have overcome and periods of your life when you have matured.


2. Make a bulleted list of the reasons why you should be admitted into the college program. Include any relevant paid or volunteer experience as this shows concrete interest and abilities. List what triggered your interest in your chosen field of study, and when you became interested. Include in this section personal characteristics such as leadership, managerial skills and analytical abilities that may help you while in college and in your future career.


3. Compile a list of what you hope to accomplish after you graduate with a degree in the field. List concrete professional goals and how you will serve the betterment of society with your degree. Also list personal goals and how a degree in your field may satisfy those goals.


4. Clean up each of the bulleted lists and bits of information. Check to see if there is a maximum word count required. Rewrite each of your bulleted lists to make the statements as concise as possible. Eliminate the bullets and begin writing the lists in narrative form. Organize each of your lists from most to least important.


5. Begin typing your statement. Create a compelling opening statement that grabs the reader's attention. Opening sentences set the tone and mood for the rest of the personal statement. Use an interesting or unusual personal fact about yourself near the opening, such as listing an obstacle you've overcome or why you're interested in the college program. Alternatively, use a famous quote near the beginning of your statement and expound on why it is relevant.


6. Transition from the opening of the personal statement to the body and remaining sections. Include information from each of your bulleted lists to create separate paragraphs in the body of the statement. Make your writing as clear and organized as possible, leaving no questions unanswered. Rewrite portions of your statement that need to be simplified or explained more clearly. Don't forget to save the document when finished writing.

Repair Shires Trombones

Major problems including large dents, broken valves and bent slides require professional assistance, but there are several minor maintenance techniques that you can perform with a few tools available from most instrument retailers.


Instructions


Outer Slide


1. Wrap the cloth tightly around the cleaning rod, keeping hold of the cloth from the base of the rod. If you don't maintain a tight hold of the cloth while cleaning the slide, you can lose the cloth inside the slide.


2. Insert the rod into the slide and push slowly until it stops. Use your fingers as a gauge to remember how far to push the rod to avoid denting the end of the tube. Pull the rod all the way out, still keeping a tight hold on the cloth.


3. Perform the previous step between ten and twenty times depending on how long it has been since the slide has been cleaned. If you clean your trombone daily (recommended), ten times will effectively clean the slide.


Inner Slide


4. Apply a small dollop of slide grease about the size of the tip of your pinky finger to each tube. Trombone players often think that applying more grease will make the instrument play even smoother, but too much grease causes messy build-up and corrosion.


5. Rub the grease into each tube with your fingers. Cover the entire length of the tube and rub the grease until you can't see any filmy residue.


6. Wipe off any excessive grease with a small cloth.


Stuck Mouthpiece


7. With the rawhide hammer, gently tap the connection point where the mouthpiece meets the lead pipe. Instead of tapping the instrument directly, hit only the nut to avoid damage.








8. Rotate the lead pipe in your hand while tapping in an angular motion. While rotating the lead pipe, gently twist the mouthpiece loose without forcing it.


9. If the mouthpiece is still stuck, wrap tape around the needle-nose pliers, covering any harsh edges to avoid damage to the instrument. Pinch the base of the mouthpiece with the pliers and twist until loose.


10. Apply a small amount of slide grease to the mouthpiece before reassembling the trombone. Rub the grease into the mouthpiece until there is no visible residue.

How Repaying A Stafford Student Loan Works

Many students borrow for their education through the federal government's Stafford student loan program. When you are nearing your graduation date or otherwise leaving school, begin thinking about how you are going to repay your Stafford loans. The process varies slightly depending on when you got your loans, how much you borrowed and how quickly you want to repay the debt.


Loan Servicing Company


When you repay your Stafford loan, you need to make payments to the agency that services your loan. In some cases, you might have to work through a loan servicing company other than the United States Department of Education. This is especially true if you borrowed through the Federal Family Education Loan program, which operated until July 1, 2010, to allow private lenders to issue federally guaranteed Stafford loans. For example, Sallie Mae services Stafford loans for many students. If you do not know who services your loans, look up the information through the National Student Loan Data System (see Resource).


Beginning Repayment


Your Stafford loan payments are automatically deferred while you are enrolled in school at least half-time. You do not have to begin repaying the loan until you drop below half-time enrollment. In addition, you get one six-month grace period between leaving school and beginning Stafford loan repayment. This allows you to get your finances in order and get in touch with your loan servicing company. After you have used up this grace period, you have to begin repayment immediately after any other times of deferment end.








Monthly Payments


When you begin repayment, you must make monthly Stafford loan payments to your servicing company. The amount of the monthly payments depends on which repayment plan you choose. The default plan is 10 years of equal payments. Other options include extending repayment over up to 25 years, choosing a graduated payment plan with smaller payments at the beginning and larger payments at the end or signing up for a plan that bases payments on your income. Regardless of the plan you choose, your monthly payments will first go toward paying off any accrued interest and then go toward repaying your principal.


Postponing Repayment


The federal government offers a few ways to postpone repayment again after you begin. One option is to apply for deferment, which allows you to postpone payments for a time while you are attending school again, unemployed or suffering extreme financial hardship. During deferment, the government pays all interest if you have subsidized Stafford loans. The other option, forbearance, does not have the perk of paid interest on subsidized loans. However, you can get forbearance for a variety of circumstances, including less-extreme financial difficulty. If you cannot afford to make your payments, applying for deferment or forbearance can allow you to stop making payments without late fees or damage to your credit score.

A low GPA does not have to stay that way.


A high GPA is beneficial for a number of reasons. If you plan to apply for a graduate program or specialized degree, competitive programs seek students with high GPAs in their previous schooling. In today's tough job market, a high GPA looks good on a resume and may be just what you need to help you stand out above other applicants. If your GPA is less than desirable, it is not impossible to bring it back up.








Talk to the Professor


If you are doing poorly in classes during your current semester, it is important to talk to your teacher as soon as possible to see what might be done. Depending on circumstances, some professors may allow you to re-submit an assignment for partial points, or may offer an extra credit assignment. This is typically only done if you are in good standing for the class. Most professors only grant you extra point opportunities if you have turned in all of your assignments and they feel you have put forth genuine effort in the class. If you have been slacking off, you are likely to be told you got the grade you deserved. Never wait until the end of the semester to talk to your professor, otherwise it may be too late. Go in for help as soon as you see your grades are suffering.


Attend All Classes


Many students think they can get by in college by skipping class and skimming the book on their own time. This almost always has negative effects. You are almost guaranteed to miss out on important information if you don't attend every class. Aside from the fact that you will be better prepared for your class when you attend the lectures, many professors assign points for attendance, and good attendance could be the difference between a passing grade and a failing grade. In addition, if you are talking to a teacher about ways to raise your grade, she is usually more likely to help you if your attendance has been good and she knows you have been putting in effort. Classes should only be missed in cases of extreme illness or other emergencies.


Retake Classes


Sometimes it is only a few classes causing your GPA to suffer. Many universities allow you to retake a class you have done poorly in for a better grade. The class you took the first time around will still show up on your transcripts in some cases, depending on the university's policy. However, it will no longer affect your GPA as long as you receive a better grade the second time around. This takes extra time and money, and most people don't want to repeat classes, but it is one of the most effective ways of bringing up a GPA.








Work Hard


The best way to get your GPA up is simply to work hard for the remainder of your classes. Take more time to study and become familiar with the text books. Get tutoring on subjects that you are struggling with. Contact your professor if there is something in the class you are unclear about. Do not wait until the end of the semester when you know you are failing to buckle down. By that point it is usually too late. Work hard from the beginning, and you will be less frantic at the end.

Online Education Strategies

Online classes call for a different approach.


To engage students, online instructors must use strategies that fit the medium, encourage interaction, appeal to different learning styles and develop critical thinking. According to the Illinois Online Network (ION), simply adapting traditional teaching practices to online classes may prove ineffective. In the online environment, instructors become facilitators, creating new formats for lectures, discussions, small group work, self-directed learning and assessment.


Lectures








Online, lectures may take new audio and video forms. Purdue University suggests tutorials or PowerPoint presentations with audio and online audio clips may provide instruction. Strategically, within the presentations, instructors can provide links to websites and videos, according to ION. Short online presentations can capture students' attention span and allow them to view lectures repeatedly. This repetition can assist students who might have difficulty grasping concepts in a traditional classroom.


Discussions


According to ION, adult learners prefer discussion more than any other educational strategy. In a real-time (synchronous) discussion, online students can participate in chats. More commonly, discussion becomes asynchronous, allowing busy students to converse when their schedules permit during a set time frame. For instance, Discussion Board in Blackboard allows students to discuss issues and reply to others. Even emails can allow students to exchange papers for peer reviews of assignments.








Small Groups


The online environment can encourage small group work and collaboration, allowing the instructor to become a "consultant," according to ION. Using "real world" problems, students may explore case studies or play simulation games. Such strategies provide flexibility for groups and remove obstacles for finding meeting times. In addition, students' differences become less noticeable, allowing students with disabilities, for example, to have an equal voice. The instructor, in turn, can assist each group individually.


Self-Directed Learning


If instructors create appropriate online environments that encourage students to search the best Internet sites and databases, students can become self-directed learners, according to ION. This strategy can encourage students to learn independently as they use the institution's databases, Internet libraries, museums and news sites. As students assess the credibility of websites, they become more critical thinkers.


Assessment


Online instructors must have strategies for assessment. Without proctors for exams, instructors should create open-notes tests, according to ION. For an open-note test, instructors can randomize questions to prevent students from copying from each other and create essay questions to encourage higher-level thought processes. In addition to assessing mastery, instructors can use ungraded quizzes to help students evaluate their understanding.

Freshman Applicants


1. Apply on line with the Common Application or the Universal College Application. Both of these online application types are operated by an independent website but are accepted by Harvard and can be found on Harvard's website (see References). To apply, you must create a free account on either site, and fill in the requested information, including an essay. Then you may send in your transcripts to Harvard College at:

2. Submit payment of $75 (2010) to the Common Application or Universal College Application when prompted to complete your application. Payment must be made by debit or credit card.


3. Download supplemental application forms to be admitted in addition to your online application. You can download these forms from Harvard's website, but you will not be able to complete or submit them online. The required forms include Harvard Supplement, School Report, two Teacher Reports, and the Mid-Year School Report. The Harvard Supplement, which ask applicants additional information about their proposed area of study, extracurricular activites, and provides additional essay topics in addition to the online application essay question. The School Report requires you to enter in your current coursework information; a counselor or school administrator must complete the report and include details about your academic performance. The Teacher Reports must be completed by two different instructors and include information about your academic performance. The Mid-Year School Report tracks your academic progress in the middle of the school year.


Transfer Applicants


4. Complete the Universal Transfer Application on line. The online Common Application is not available to transfer students. The Universal Transfer Application is operated by a third-party and is accepted by the admissions committee at Harvard College.


5. Pay all applicable admissions fees when prompted online. The Universal Transfer Application website will process your admission fee for Harvard College. You must pay by credit or debit card. As of 2010, the admissions fee was $75.


6. Download, complete and return the supplemental admissions form. This includes the Harvard Supplement, College Report and two Professor Recommendation forms. These forms are similar to those required by freshman applicants except they require information about your college coursework and recommendations from two college professors.
