1. Select the type of nursing program you want to enter. Certified nursing assistants require only certifications and the program is available at many vocational and community colleges. Registered nurses require either an associate of science or bachelor of science degree. Nurse practitioners and anesthetists require a master's degree.


2. Examine the entry requirements. If you already have an advanced degree, you will need to show that you have completed transferable prerequisites to enter into a bachelor's program for nursing. For example, Penn State's School of Nursing recommends that transfer students complete introduction to chemistry, biology and human anatomy with a lab, plus a nutrition class. A certified nursing assistant only requires a high school diploma. Those wishing to enter a nurse practitioner degree program will need to have a current registered nursing license, plus a few years of work experience as a nurse.


3. Contact a transfer or admissions counselor at the nursing school of choice to go over your transcript and work experience. Depending on the program requirements, you may have already fulfilled some of the required classes. Some schools will only accept coursework completed within the last five years.


4. Complete the GRE, if applying to graduate program in nursing. Many master's programs in nursing will waive the GRE for applicants who've completed a master's degree as long as they maintained a 3.0 GPA.








5. Apply to the nursing program. Many registered and advanced nursing programs are competitive and space is limited. Apply to several programs, if possible. As part of the application, you will need to include three recommendations and an official transcript from all previous educational institutions.

Grants To Help Pay For Improvements On A Home

There is a lot of competition for home improvement government grants.


Home improvements go hand in hand with home ownership. Improvements and repairs range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on the scope of the project. Yet not all homeowners can afford to take on the added financial burden that goes along with costly improvements. In these cases, the public has access to grant programs from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and income tax credits. However, grant funding is limited to specific circumstances, specific individuals and available funding.


USDA Grants


The USDA Rural Repair and Rehabilitation Loans and Grant program offers a very-low-income housing-repair-and-upgrade grant program. This program offers a maximum grant of $7,500 to needy homeowners meeting USDA guidelines and requirements.


In order to qualify, the homeowner must live in a rural area, be 62 years of age or older, meet the income guidelines and only use the funds for a primary residence; secondary and vacation homes are excluded. The USDA program is the only true grant program currently available in 2011 according to data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.


FEMA Assistance








FEMA assists victims of natural disasters. FEMA provides grants to residents needing to repair or replace a loss of a home as a subsidy to homeowner's insurance coverage. The U.S. Department of Energy offers tax credits for home improvements when it comes to upgrading a property for energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources -- as opposed to fossil fuels. Tax credits range from 10 to 30 percent of the improvement cost and cover items such as stoves, air conditioning, insulation, roofs, water heaters, windows, doors, heat pumps and solar energy upgrades.








Considerations


Even though email advertisements and websites claim to have the secret keys to "unlock" free government grant money for homebuying and home improvement, you should seek reliable information from sources such as the Department of Housing and Urban Development to distinguish real opportunities from scams.


If grant money is available, it is generally given on a first-come, first-served basis and only to those displaying severe financial hardship. As an alternative to grant funding, property owners can take out a home equity loan for improvements and still have the benefit of writing the interest of the loan off on tax returns, in addition to taking advantage of available tax credits for improvements.

The Basics

8. Give your referee plenty of time to write the letter and have it mailed in by the application deadline. Three to four weeks is generally appropriate. Make sure you inform your referee of the program's application deadline.


9. Thank your referee at the time they agree to write the letter, and send a thank-you note after the letter has been sent. They are doing you a big favor, and you want to show your appreciation.

What Is The Zeeman And Perkin Correction

Analyzing a molecule is diffuclt and complicated.


In the ultra high-tech world of molecular chemistry, molecular analysis is a common activity. Complex machines, called mass spectrometers, are used to pick apart a substance to determine its composition; however, flaws in the data are introduced by this very process. These flaws produce an inaccurate reading. To overcome this, the Zeeman correction process is used. Unfortunately, the Zeeman correction is not 100 percent accurate; a scientific company, called Perkins-Elmer, refined the correction process by combining another method with the Zeeman correction.


Understanding Zeeman Correction


In order for a substance to be analyzed, it first has to be vaporized. After vaporization, a complex series of procedures takes place utilizing radiation. The end result is the particles settling out in fine lines on a background; sometimes the particles do not settle out correctly. The Zeeman correction introduces a very powerful magnetic field into the vapor. The end effect is that the molecules become magnetized and settle out according to their magnetic field strength.








Deficincies of Zeeman Correction


Chemical analysis is not just for distant researchers working in remote labs; many times individual and public health is at stake. For example, arsenic levels in edible fish must be ascertained. Unfortunately, researchers found out that a 100 percent accurate reading of arsenic cannot be obtained by using the Zeeman correction alone.


Perkins-Elmer Method


Because the Zeeman correction does not guarantee 100 percent accuracy, additional methods of correction are needed. The Perkins-Elmer Corporation uses a method of combining Zeeman correction with optical correction in their instruments. The company has patented a device called the Transversely Heated Graphite Atomizer to achieve optical correction. By combining the Zeeman correction with optical correction, the company states that more accurate readings are possible. It has used the new device to accurately determine arsenic levels in drinking water.








Significance of Combined Methods


No one method of correction is 100 percent accurate. Zeeman correction is effective -- to a point. Optical correction is also effective, but it is not an end-all process. By combining the methods, the deficiencies of each are negated. For many materials, it is imperative that an accurate reading be obtained by combining these correction methods.

Csi Experiments For Kids







Using a variety of CSI (crime scene investigation) experiments, it is possible to teach biology, chemistry and physics. Forensic science is exciting for kids because it provides an opportunity to help solve a case.








Biology


During a biology course, focus on CSI experiments that involve DNA, fingerprinting, dental imprints or body decomposition. Physics

The investigative team then uses testimony and bullet trajectory to re-create the battle and determine who was responsible for which hit.

Most academic extracurricular activities are competition clubs.








An extracurricular activity refers to a club, event or group that takes place outside of the required school curriculum. That is, an extracurricular activity is voluntary and is participated in outside of school hours. Model United Nations


Model United Nations (MUN) is an internationally recognized academic event held all over the world. MUN teaches students about the United Nations, current events, the global community and diplomacy. Many high schools and universities have MUN clubs that meet regularly after school to research, practice and organize events. The culminating event of MUN is a conference, usually held at a University or other internationally recognized location, where MUN members representing a designated country role-play sessions of the United Nations. Prominent MUN conferences around the world include the Hague International, North American Invitational (sponsored by Georgetown University) and the Student's League of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.








National History Day


National History Day is a competition for students of either public or private school from grades six through 12 concerning a designated theme in history. Many schools offer History Day "clubs" or assistance information concerning the event. Competitors enter a research project either in the form of a paper, display, documentary or performance based on a particular theme such as "revolution and reform." Competitors must present their project to a panel of judges first at a regional competition, followed by state and national competitions if they advance. If a school does not have an NHD club, speak with a history or English language teacher for advice and assistance on starting one or going at it solo.


Mock Trial and Moot Court


Mock Trial clubs exist at the middle school, high school and college levels. Mock Trial simulates an actual lower court hearing with attention to procedure, discourse and role practice in the courtroom. Moot Court club is generally reserved for college level students and focuses on simulating appellate court cases. These clubs offer practice and insight into the goings-on inside of a courtroom, allowing students to gauge the possibility of entering into law school. There are many national Mock Trial and Moot Court conferences and competitions for which many clubs train.


Knowledge Masters


The Knowledge Master Open (KMO) is a computer-based competition between teams from different schools across the world, consisting of trivia-style questions on a variety of subjects. KMO is performed completely online, and there is no physical competition for the event. The contest covers subject areas of math, science, biology, literature, geography, history, arts, health and other, more minor categories. Clubs often gather to review practice questions. A KMO team can have any number of participants and is divided into three groups between grades five through 12.


Academic Decathlon


The U.S. Academic Decathlon is similar to Knowledge Masters in that it pits one team's academic knowledge against another. Each high school can have one team of nine members participate in the live competition first at the local, regional, state and then finally national competition (for those who advance). The competition is rigorous and requires detailed knowledge in the areas of math, literature, art, economics, speech, language, science, music and social science. School clubs generally practice regularly to prepare for the competitions.


Subject Clubs


Many schools have distinct subject clubs such as math club, astronomy club, debate club, politics club and various book clubs. The types of clubs offered at most schools depend on the availability and knowledge of advisers and student interest.

The state of Florida boasts some very successful college athletics programs. Individual Sports


While competing as a team, some sports rely on the individual success of each team member. Florida colleges have programs for individual sports like cross country, track and field, tennis, swimming, diving and golf. Many of the programs are successful and produce athletes that go on to compete professionally. Florida State University and University of Florida ranked number two and three in the NCAA track and field team rankings. Florida school's swimming, diving, cross country and golf college teams also have high rankings.


Intramural Sports








Community colleges and small four-year colleges that are not able to compete in the higher NCAA divisions often offer intramural sport programs. Intramural sports are recreational teams and tournaments organized by students, clubs or associations usually affiliated with campus life initiatives. Many schools have intramural programs in sports like basketball, volleyball and basketball even if they also have competitive teams so that all students can participate. The Effects Of Alcohol On Academics

Drinking can kill brain cells.


The effect of alcohol on college academics can be detrimental. Influencing sleep, cognitive ability and general disposition, alcohol may be a typical aspect of college life, but it is largely a negative one.


Alcohol and GPA


According to a report from Harvard's School of Public Health published in "Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning" in 1996, a study conducted by Henry Weschler and associates found that nearly 84 percent of students surveyed engaged in drinking during the school year. The study also indicates that as the number of drinks per week a student consumes increases, his academic achievement decreases. On average, "A" students consume fewer than four drinks per week, "B" students consume between five and six drinks per week, "C" students consume between seven and eight drinks per week, and "D" students consume nine or more drinks per week.


Alcohol Influences Sleep


In a study published in the May 2009 issue of the "Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs," researchers from College of the Holy Cross indicated that alcohol can disrupt normal sleep cycles. Students who drink heavily over time often get less sleep than their peers and tend to be less alert during daytime hours, which can create problems with focusing. In addition, habitual drinking can lead to unhealthy sleep-wake patterns established by going to bed late and sleeping during daylight hours.


Short-term Effects


Alcohol can influence cognitive ability, professors from Duke University Medical Center report in their 2003 book "Buzzed." Their studies show that judgment and memory can be compromised for up to 72 hours after consumption. Though most students believe they are fine once the inebriated state ends, studies have shown that attention span and the ability to learn are negatively influenced for days after alcohol consumption. Heavy drinking can also cause students to forget previously learned material and misjudge emotional and social cues.


Long-term Effects


Chronic drinkers can develop serious health problems such as cirrhosis of the liver and damage to the central nervous system. The researchers of "Buzzed" also reveal that students who develop serious drinking habits can kill brain cells and destroy the connections between nerve cells.

Become A Counseling Psycologist

A counseling psychologist treats patients undergoing issues such as stress, substance abuse, AIDS, anxiety and eating disorders. The profession of counseling psychologists differs from clinical psychologists, who treat patients diagnosed with extreme mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Becoming a counseling psychologist takes extensive education and training, available at many colleges across the country.








Instructions


1. Determine whether you want to seek a master's or doctoral degree in counseling psychology. Master's programs range from two to three years; PhD programs last about five, including a year of clinical rotation in a counseling setting. Psychologists with master's degrees make less money than those with a PhD, but jobs may be more available at a lower pay rate, according to San Diego State University.








2. Ensure you qualify for a master's or PhD program and gather application materials, such as a minimum of three letters of recommendation, Graduate Record Exam scores, any record of prior psychology work experience or volunteering and a transcript of your undergraduate education. Some schools may require a major in psychology, others allow candidates of any major. According to Purdue University's data on admissions to its counseling psychology program, the average admission grade point average of its bachelor candidates was 3.68 and 3.9 for the master's.


3. Take courses such as those in the University of Florida's graduate counseling psychology program, including survey of behavior analysis, psychotherapy with older adults, human factors, psychology of counseling, psychological assessment, professional ethics and skills in counseling psychology, vocational psychology, group counseling, behavioral pharmacology and survey of developmental psychology.


4. Join on-campus groups such as the Psychology Club and Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society. Honor societies list job links, membership rosters and opportunities for continuing education on their websites, which may be useful to you after graduation. Another option is to join a professional group such as the American Counseling Association or American Mental Health Counselors Association, which offer a directory, online learning, conferences and competitions for students.


5. Consult your state's Board of Licensing (it may be called the Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, such as in North Carolina, or the Secretary of State, the Division of Licensing or another name) to determine the types of professional counseling licensing and the requirements. For example, North Carolina offers three versions of license: a supervised associate, a professional counselor with no supervision and a counselor supervisor. All require transcripts of a completed graduate-level counseling degree and an exam given by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Counselors interested in the second tier, professional counselor with no supervision, must provide documentation of having served a minimum of 3,000 hours as a professional counselor under supervision.


6. Find job openings by checking schools, rehabilitation facilities, college campuses, mental health centers and counseling offices where groups of psychologists rent or purchase an office space and share expenses. Also, the American Counseling Organization and American Mental Health Counselors Association both list searchable job openings for counseling psychologists on their websites. Employment of counselors is projected to continue an 18 percent rise through the year 2018, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

University Degree Classifications

There are many levels of college degrees.


University degrees run the gamut of undergraduate, graduate, post graduate, doctoral and professional degrees to attain various levels of education, careers and professional licenses such as doctor, lawyer or minister. The time to complete a course of study for the various degrees can range from two years to eight, 10 or more depending on the discipline and the college.


Associate's Degree


A high school graduate can attend a community college, technical college or four-year college that offers a two-year degree program to attain an associate's degree. It can be an Associate of Arts degree in social sciences and humanities, Associate of Science degree in science and technical fields, an Associate of Applied Science degree from a technical or vocational college or an Associate of Occupational Studies. The latter two degrees prepare the graduate to work in careers such as medical record technician, paralegal, computer networking and agriculture among others. The associate's degree is also a steppingstone to a four-year bachelor's degree program.


Bachelor's Degree


This is the traditional four-year undergraduate college degree also known as the baccalaureate degree. The graduate will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree if the major was humanities or social sciences. A student with a major in biology or mathematics will receive a Bachelor of Science degree after completing the course of study. Some colleges offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Bachelor of Business Administration as well as other specialized four-year programs. All undergraduates must take basic education courses in English, math, science and social studies to meet their degree requirements. The bachelor's degree prepares the graduate for a career or for advanced study for a master's, doctorate or a professional degree.


Master's Degree


A bachelor's degree holder can earn a Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Social Work or a Master of Architecture with one to two years of additional study. This is often referred to as "grad school," and specific undergraduate courses may be required to qualify for a master's program. A master's degree is mandatory for some occupations such as engineering, physical therapy and social work. A master's degree also prepares a graduate student to advance to the doctoral level of higher education. Some doctoral programs accept students with bachelor's degrees and do not require master's degrees to qualify.


Doctoral Degree


The highest degree that can be earned in graduate studies is the Doctor of Philosophy degree in fields including arts, business, education, ophthalmology and radiology. The doctoral degree can require three to five years to complete. Examples of doctoral degree designations are Doctor of Education, Doctor of Nursing Science and Doctor of Public Health.


Professional Degree/License


Dentists, chiropractors, medical doctors, veterinarians, lawyers, divinity and ministry students must attend special schools such as medical school, law school and religion education institutions to attain professional licenses to practice in their professions. Keep in mind that many languages are related by language families, such as the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Latin, Portuguese) and Germanic languages (English, German, Danish, Icelandic). Learning a language within the same family can help you more easily learn each one because they share many similar traits, including phonology and morphology.


2. Set your background music. Studying to certain music, particularly classical chamber music, can help enhance your ability to retain information and increase your short-term spatio-temporal abilities. This is not just limited to Mozart's music, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos have been shown to work as well. The thought is that the rhythm and increasingly complex themes in the music increase the neural pathways associated with learning and retention.


3. Find music in your chosen language, particularly children's music. Listening and immersing yourself in a foreign language is helpful when learning. Children's music is great because it often helps to teach basic concepts like counting, body parts, time and manners. It's okay if you don't understand all the words of the foreign songs--eventually you'll learn more words and can work out the meaning for yourself. Don't read the translations, figure it out.


4. Set your studies to music. If you cannot find existing music in your chosen language, set your words to music. Start simple with vocabulary words, numbers and the alphabet. The alphabet song can be used for many languages and will help you get a better handle on properly pronounce the letters and sounds. Counting can be fun--try singing numbers 1-27 set to Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock." Try songs like Happy Birthday, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Where is Thumbkin. Try substituting the vocabulary words you're trying to learn into popular songs that you already know and love.


5. Add complexity to your songs. Once you've mastered the basics, add conversation to your songs. You can start with something simple like verb tenses and pronouns--that's a great way to get them memorized and use them properly. For example, "I play, you play, he/she/it plays, we play..."


6. Get conditional. A great way to work out sentence structure is to add conditional phrases to your sentences. This is particularly helpful in mastering these phrases because in many languages, the verb is moved to the end of a sentence when a conditional phrase is used. For example, you could make up a song with, "I play, but you do not play." Play around with your verb tenses, practice opposites, sing along. It will seem hard at first and you'll mess up a lot, but keep practicing and you'll get it. Conditional phrases are challenging and if singing a tune will help you get them correct, you will have instantly stepped up your language proficiency to a much higher level.

Receive A Stafford And Perkins Loan

You can receive both a Stafford and Perkins loan at the same time to help you pay for your higher education expenses. In order to do so, however, your school must participate in the Federal Perkins Loan program and you must demonstrate financial need for this loan.


Stafford Loans








Stafford loans are a part of the federal student loan program offered through the U.S. Department of Education. You can receive either a subsidized or an unsubsidized Stafford loan. Interest on subsidized loans does not accrue as long as you remain enrolled in school at least part time. Interest on unsubsidized loans accrues while you are attending school. You must demonstrate financial need to qualify for a subsidized Stafford loan and must enroll in an accredited college or university at least part time to qualify.


Stafford Eligibility Requirements


To be eligible for a Stafford loan, you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. You must be a U.S. citizen, naturalized citizen, national or permanent resident. If you are non-citizen, you can still qualify if your immigration Arrival and Departure Record indicates you are a refugee, have asylum, are a Cuban-Haitian entrant with pending status or a parolee. Parolees must wait one year from their parole date and provide proof of their intentions of becoming a permanent resident to qualify for a Stafford loan.








Perkins Loans


Colleges and universities can choose whether to participate in the Federal Perkins Loan Program. If your school does not participate in the program, you are not eligible to receive a Perkins loan. Participating schools receive funding from the U.S. Department of Education to make Perkins loans to their students. When you take out a Perkins loan, your school becomes the lender on the loan. Schools give students who have Pell Grants priority for Perkins loans.


Perkins Eligibility Requirements


Your school will determine your financial need based on the financial information you provide on your FAFSA. You must also be a citizen, naturalized citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident of the United States. Non-citizens must provide copies of their immigration paperwork to their school to determine eligibility. Other requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Social Security number. Men born on or after January 1, 1960 must register with the Selective Service if they have not already done so before they can receive a Perkins loan.

Who Qualifies for a Pell Grant?


The Federal Pell Grant is a source of financial aid awarded to those individuals who are considered to be financially disadvantaged and who have not yet had the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree. In addition to demonstrating financial need, an eligible candidate must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen, have a high school diploma or a GED and exhibit the skill to do well in the designated program.


Identification


Eligible applicants are determined by a specific criterion that is dictated by the U.S. Department of Education. They use a set formula to establish a student's qualification for a Pell Grant. The formula takes into account the student's income and the income of her family, as well as the expected family contribution (EFC). The overall cost or tuition of program/school and the student's anticipated enrollments (either full-time or part-time) are also factors when determining eligibility.


Features


Federal Pell Grants are awarded to students who have not received their first bachelor's degree. However, in some cases exceptions are made. The intention of the Federal Pell Grant is to allow students with financial disadvantages to obtain a higher level of education (despite monetary restrictions). The grant ensures their enrollment in a specific program that's directed toward teacher certification or licensure.


Time Frame


The amount of the grant awarded can change according to the year it is administered and the funding or monetary participation of the definite program. If awarded the grant, a student receives it from the school directly or the institution that she'll be attending may give monetary credit to the student's Federal Pell Grant account. In some cases it is a combination of the two. Since Pell Grants are federal financial aid; the government creates and oversees the eligibility requirements in addition to determining the time frames that the grant is to be paid. It is dictated that the student must be paid for each semester, which usually amounts to twice every academic year.


Considerations


In order to be eligible for the Pell Grant, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It's important that the FAFSA is submitted by the cutoff date. For example, a student would have had to complete the 2007-08 FAFSA by the end of June in order to be eligible for aid in the 2007-08 school year. If the student fails to complete the required forms by the due date, they run the risk of not obtaining aid for that semester.


Following the filing and completion of the FAFSA, the Student Aid Report (SAR) is sent to the student, or an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) is forwarded to the institution that they are seeking to attend. Both the SAR and ISIR inform the student of her qualification for the Federal Pell Grant.


Types


Federal Pell Grants are awarded via participating colleges and institutions to individuals enrolled in specific programs that are directed toward teacher certification or licensure. The approved post-secondary institutions are listed under the U.S. Department of Education (ED) Programs. The ED administers the programs and issues the "Guide to U.S. Department of Education Programs" every academic year.








Data concerning specific ED programs can be found in the guidebook, which includes details about a program's objective, criteria, eligibility requirements, funding and contact information. Currently, around 5,400 post-secondary institutions participate in the program. According to the Federal Student Aid website: "The maximum Pell Grant award for the 2008-09 award year (July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009) is $4,731." (See Additional Resources below.) In addition to the Pell Grant, students may also collect other financial aid, grants and scholarships.

Find Out If You Are Eligible For A Pell Grant

A Pell Grant is free money for your college education.








The Federal Pell Grant program gives grants to students from low-income families to help pay for an undergraduate degree. The amount of the grant varies by year, and you'll receive more if you are a full-time student than if you are a part-time student. Applying for a Pell Grant is easy: You do it at the same time that you apply for other financial aid from the school. If you qualify, you will not have to pay this money back.








Instructions


1. Make sure of your resident status. Pell Grants are available only to U.S. citizens, so if you are an international applicant or a resident alien, you will not qualify.


2. Ask if your college is Pell Grant-eligible. Most colleges qualify for the Pell Grant program, but some do not. Verify this before applying to the school by contacting the financial aid office.


3. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application will help to determine your financial aid package from the school, and it may qualify you for Pell Grant and other federal loan programs as well. The application asks for information about your family income and assets. As of 2010, your family income must be less than $30,000 to receive the full Pell amount, though you may receive a partial grant if your family makes less than $60,000 per year.
