Canadian Nursing Scholarships

Scholarships are available to help Canadian nursing students.

Becoming a nurse can be quite costly. This is due to expensive tuition, laboratory fees, housing fees, books and courseware, and additional taxes and expenses. It takes several years to complete a nursing degree in Canada, depending on the concentration. Because of this, many students need financial aid to avoid massive debt. However, there are several scholarships available for nursing students in Canada.

Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN)

Once a year, the CACCN holds a drawing for members of the association who have successfully completed their nursing certifications or renewals through the Canadian Nursing Association. The scholarship is worth $2,000 and funds are paid in $250 increments. Individuals who wish to be considered for the drawing must provide their contact information and proof of nursing certification or renewal to the CACCN. Winners will be recognized in the CACCN journal, "Dynamics." In addition to the drawing, smaller local associations also offer sponsorship assistance to nursing students. For more information, contact CACCN directly.

The Canadian Nursing Student Association

The Canadian Nursing Student Association (CNSA) offers annual scholarships to nursing students. These scholarships are often decided upon merit rather than financial need. Each fall, the CNSA website is updated with the relevant scholarships available. The requirements and financial aid change annually, so applications processed one year may not be applicable for the following year. To apply for a CNSA scholarship, students must be members of the CNSA. For more information regarding scholarships, visit the CNSA website forums or contact the CNSA directly.

Canadian Nurse Foundation

The Canadian Nurse Foundation (CNF) awards scholarships based on merit rather than financial need. This is due to the foundation's belief that it is important to support the best and brightest of nurses. The annual scholarship offered by CNF is available to all nursing students nationwide. It is recommended that applicants learn the merit review process before filling out the application. Furthermore, it is important that students identify which levels they will pursue during the upcoming academic year. The forms for the scholarships can be found online and should be printed and submitted via mail. Applicants are asked to contact CNF if questions arise during the application process.

Ladies Auxiliary of the Fairvale Outing Association

The University of New Brunswick awards the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fairvale Outing Scholarship each year. The $1,000 scholarship is non-renewable. It is available to students in any area of study, who are currently working on a bachelor's degree. Applicants must be beyond their first years of study and must show progress and interest to continue in their current fields of study. Students must attend the University of New Brunswick; however, since the scholarship is available to students in all areas of study, nursing students at the University of New Brunswick may also apply. Students are asked to contact the university directly to apply.
