A certified registered nurse anesthetist is a nurse licensed by the state to supervise patients undergoing anesthesia. In order to become a CRNA, you must graduate from a CRNA school or program. 1. Prepare with the right educational credentials. All CRNA school applicants must complete an undergraduate degree in nursing. The degree must be a four-year degree and include both liberal arts classes and science classes. Students must be admitted to BSN program or Bachelor of Science in nursing. As an undergraduate, you will study the fundamentals of nursing practice. Once you graduate you must pass state certification exams to work as a nurse.
2. Earn high grades. Most CRNA schools require potential students to have at least a 3.0 grade point average in order to be considered for admissions. Focus closely on your studies as an undergraduate. Ask questions. Keep detailed notes. If you don't understand a subject, ask questions. You want to receive a solid foundation in all aspects of nursing procedures.
3. Complete the necessary work requirements. Most CRNA schools require candidates for admission to have at least a year of full time work experience. You must spend time working in an ICU or intensive care unit. A nurse with experience in another field such as pediatrics will not be considered for admission, nor will candidates who possess less than the required year of experience.
4. Work with supervisors closely. Most CRNA programs require applicants to have strong letters of recommendation. A supervisor should be intimately familiar with your work. Show up on time and get to know supervisors closely. Demonstrate your desire to learn about nursing anesthesiology. Ask a supervisor to let you observe surgeries, assist anesthesiologists and work directly with patients who are about to undergo surgery.
5. Prepare your application fully. Admission to a CRNA school requires completing a detailed application. Get copies of your college transcripts in advance and copies of all recommendations from your supervisors. Apply at least two months in advance. Some CRNA programs only accept applications during the certain periods such as the summer before the fall term begins. Keep detailed records about each school to which you apply.
