Prime A Red Jacket Shallow Well Pump

Keep water flowing from your shallow well with a properly primed Red Jacket pump.

Red Jacket pumps serve as a vital component of many plumbing systems. The Red Jacket shallow well pump draws water out of underground well systems. Well pumps move water via either centrifugal force or a combination of centrifugal force and injection called jet pumping. Priming either the centrifugal or jet versions of a Red Jacket well pump involves removing the cap or plug on the priming hole, pouring water into the pump casing and starting the pump to achieve circulation.

Instructions

1. Remove the rubber plug or plastic cap from the pump's priming hole. On centrifugal pump models, the priming hole sits on top of the pump casing. On jet pump models, the priming hole sits on the face of the pump casing.

2. Pour water from a water hose or bucket into the Red Jacket pump's casing through the priming hole. Pour until water begins backing up and overflows out of the priming hole.

3. Place the priming plug or cap loosely onto the priming hole. Start the Red Jacket pump. Run the pump until water bubbles or trickles out from under the plug or cap. Fully press the plug into the hole or screw the cap into place.

Tips Warnings

Always prime the pump system after prolonged periods of inactivity.
