Hillbilly Themed Craft Ideas

Hillbilly Themed Craft Ideas

Although a hillbilly is defined as a person who resides in a backwoods or remote mountain area, the term has taken on a somewhat derogatory nature, which often detracts from the cleverness and adeptness of the people residing in rural areas. The hillbilly lifestyle has produced plenty of ingenious craft ideas. Whether it is an advanced craft project or a simple exercise, hillbilly craft projects can be enjoyed by folks from all walks of life.

Hillbilly Phone

Hillbilly crafts show ingenuity in addressing everyday needs. A need to communicate can be addressed with two tin cups and a piece of string. Take two cleaned cans, both open on one end, puncture a small hole in the bottom of each can. In some cases, the edge of the tin can may be sharp or serrated, so use masking or electrical tape around the lip of the exposed can. Thread one end of a long piece of string through the holes in the bottom of each tin can and tie a knot on each. Once the string is tied, test your new hillbilly telephone. The can will amplify vibrations from the mouth and should pass through the string from one can to the other.

Hillbilly Wallet

A roll of duct tape can easily be transformed into a hillbilly wallet. Create a sheet of duct tape that is 8.5 inches by 7 inches by two sheets of layered strips and combining the sheets so that the adhesive is not exposed. Next, trim the edges of the created sheet and fold the wallet in half. Apply tape to the sides to form a pocket that will hold bills. Create the smaller credit card pockets by creating another duct tape sheet, this time 4 inches by 3.5 inches, and folding the sheet over 1.5 inches so it forms a small pocket that can then be applied to the large pocket. Repeat this step and overlap the smaller pockets to create three small layered pockets. Decorate or customize the wallet as you see fit.

Hillbilly Backscratcher

The hillbilly back-scratcher doubles as a fun crafts project and a useful item to have around the home. To create the back-scratcher, obtain a dried corncob and a stick or dowel between 18 and 36 inches in length. Remove any remaining kernels from the dried corn cob. After you remove the kernels, use a drill to make a 1-inch deep hole on the top of the dried corn cob that is roughly the same diameter as the selected stick or dowel. Check to see if the stick or dowel fits snugly in the hole. Spread wood glue along the end of the stick that will placed in the cob; also apply glue directly into the drilled hole. Insert the glued end of the stick into the hole on the top of the corn cob and wait 30 minutes to one hour to ensure the glue has dried before using.
