Replace A Shower Floor Pan

Having a good high quality shower pan is very important. The cheaper materials for shower pans usually do not resist stains very well. These stains can make the shower area unattractive. Replacing an old shower pan with a new high quality one can increase the shower area's appeal and make cleaning a little easier. Many of the new high quality units resist stains, have consistent color completely through the material and come with protective coatings to help ensure long life.

Instructions

1. Remove the shower surround. For three piece units, the surround can usually be pulled off the wall. One piece units and tile will usually have to be broken with a sledge hammer.

2. Cut the shower drain pan pipe from under the shower pan. Lift the pan out of the way. If the pan sits on a mortar bed, the pan and mortar bed may have to be broken with a sledge hammer and chisel for easy removal.

3. Clean off the shower pan area. Cover the area with roofing paper and cut out the drain hole. Mix one bag of mortar per the manufacturer's directions on the bag. Pour the mortar on top of the roofing paper and spread it to a 1 inch thickness. Do not cover the drain hole with mortar.

4. Set the shower pan on top of the mortar bed and set the level on the edge of the shower pan. Push down lightly on each corner of the shower pan until the pan is level. Check all four sides and make sure they are all level.

5. Wait 36 to 48 hours for the mortar to dry. The drying time may vary depending on the humidity and type of mortar used.
