Factors To Consider In The Design Of A Kitchen

Take time to consider all the factors involved in kitchen design.

Once a utilitarian room designed strictly for cooking, the kitchen has become a gathering place for family and friends. Designing a new kitchen or taking on a kitchen remodel represents a large investment in time and money. Thoughtful planning and design will result in a beautiful and efficient kitchen space. Consider six key factors before beginning a kitchen design project.

Layout

Kitchens, whether large or small, must allow for efficient work flow and traffic. U-shaped kitchens feature work surfaces, appliances and storage aligned along three walls. L-shaped kitchens have a 90-degree layout along two walls. Galley kitchens are long and narrow with work surfaces, appliances and storage along a single wall or two opposite walls. Each kitchen configuration should apply the triangle rule for placement for the stove, refrigerator and sink to provide easy access to these high traffic stations.

Cabinets

Cabinets make up one of the largest design elements in any kitchen. European designs featuring sleek lines and glossy finishes look great in an industrial or modern kitchen. Wood cabinets suit most kitchen styles and feature plain flat fronts, elegant raised panels and glass inserts. Durable laminate cabinets, great for busy households with children, wipe down easily and cost less than other materials.

Countertops

Budget-friendly laminate countertops come in an assortment of colors and finishes. However, they lack the heat resistance and durability of higher-priced options. Tile provides an inexpensive countertop alternative and is available in a variety of materials like ceramic, glass and natural stone. Synthetic solid-surface countertops offer extra durability, as do expensive engineered stone surfaces. Granite, marble and soapstone offer the ultimate in solid countertop materials, but are porous and must be routinely sealed to guard against stains.

Flooring

Kitchen flooring should be based on personal preference and the other design elements in the room. Vinyl flooring, by far the least expensive, provides comfort under foot, but offers little resistance to burns, dents and gouges. Tile offers style and color versatility, but provides minimal comfort under foot and can suffer cracks and chips over time. Wood and wood laminate floors lend warmth to the kitchen, however, care must be taken to avoid scratches in high-traffic areas.

Lighting

When considering a kitchen illumination plan, take into account both direct and indirect lighting sources. task, ambient and under-counter lighting. Install rope lighting along the tops of cabinets to provide a soft glow for evening. Recessed fixtures wash work surfaces with ample task lighting. Pendants spotlight sinks, cook tops, prep areas and eating surfaces on kitchen islands. Small florescent fixtures installed under cabinets brighten up dark corners and seldom used spaces. Chandeliers add direct light and grand style to any kitchen design.

Major Appliances

Appliances serve the most important function in the kitchen. They should be reliable and attractive. While high-end commercial appliances may not be the right fit, every kitchen needs quality appliances. Perform a needs and budget analysis to determine an appropriate appliance package. Compare the price, style, benefits and features of several different brands before purchasing.
