Fix A Leaky Twohandle Kitchen Faucet

It is often necessary to remove only one faucet handle when repairing a leak.

A leaking two-handle kitchen faucet can leave an unsightly water stain in your sink over time as well as increase your water bill. You can typically perform a repair yourself for little money and in less than an hour of your time.

Instructions

1. Determine which handle on the faucet needs to be removed. Place your hand under the leaking faucet to gauge if the water coming out is hot or cold.

2. Turn off the water to the faucet by closing the main water valve in the house. Turn on a faucet at a lower level of the house, if possible, to make sure the flow of water has stopped.

3. Pry off the cap from the faucet's handle, then use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw underneath. Pull the handle straight up to remove it from the faucet.

4. Use a wrench to turn the packing nut counterclockwise and remove it from the faucet. Clamp a wrench to the valve stem and turn it counterclockwise as well to remove it from the faucet.

5. Remove the screw on the end of the valve stem, then remove the rubber seat and washer. Coat the new seat and washer in plumber's grease as well as the threads of the valve stem.

6. Reassemble the faucet in the reverse order you took it apart. Open the house's main water valve and continue using the kitchen faucet as before.
