Donations As Wedding Gifts

Instead of receiving wedding gifts, some couples have decided to ask guests to make charitable donations to celebrate their big day. Many different ways exist for making a wedding benefit a needy cause. Couples have the option of choosing the method that best fits their needs and desires for their wedding day.

Full Donations

When asking for a charitable donation instead of a wedding gift, choose one or two charities that are close to your heart. If you and your fiancee are nature enthusiasts, choose an environmental organization such as the Sierra Club or the The National Wildlife Federation. If you are adamant about education, direct your donations to The National Center for Family Literacy or First Book. You can be sure that no matter what you're most passionate about, there's a charity that can benefit from your donations.

Partial Donations

If you know you want to find a way to help those in need with your wedding, but don't want to bypass gifts entirely, create your gift registry at a store that gives back. Websites such as the I Do Foundation and The Wedding Channel have partnerships with stores such as Target, Macy's, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Barneys New York and Amazon. You must first register with the web sites, then create your store registry and a percentage of the profits from your registry sales will be donated to charity.

Honeymoon Donations

If you have chosen to create a honeymoon registry in addition to or instead of a gift registry with a store, you can also use this to give back. Websites such as the I Do Foundation have partnerships with honeymoon registries such as Traveler's Joy. You must first register with the website, then create your registry with the honeymoon site. The honeymoon registry site will donate a set percentage of the amount raised for your honeymoon to charity.

Wedding Favor Donations

Instead of giving your guests wedding favors, use the money that you would have spent as a charitable donation. Choose any charity that you desire, and give them a gift to celebrate the happiest day of your lives. Have cards printed and placed on each table at your reception informing guests of your decision to give to charity instead of buying wedding favors. They will be touched by your generosity.
