Washington Wound Care Certification Programs

Wound-care certificaiton is available for Washington nurses.

Wound-care certification is a continuing education program available for registered nurses. Currently, three national entities are qualified to certify nurses in wound care: National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC); Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCN); and American Academy of Wound Management (AAWM). These organizations, all of which are endorsed by the National Committee for Certifying Agencies, offer nurses educational programs both on-site and online that will grant nurses wound care certification, enabling them to work in a more specialized field of nursing. While the opportunities for on-site programs are slim in Washington state, online programs can be a good option for nurses without the time or vicinity necessary to attend the courses.

Wound Management Education Program, University of Washington

The University of Washington school of nursing in Seattle offers an in-depth wound-certification program for registered nurses. The program, which supplements on-site clinical education with online reading and research, is sponsored by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board. Students receive six weeks of online education, followed by 14 days of intensive courses in Seattle, including clinical learning. Students will receive six graduate-level credits upon completing the program. As of 2009, the cost of the program was $3,495.

The University of Washington School of Nursing also offers an online version of its certification program, available to those in the state (and out), who cannot attend courses and clinicals at the Seattle campus. The program, offering the same certification as the on-site version, includes eight weeks of online learning and research, followed by at least 40 hours of clinical experience in the students' own area. Students have one month to accumulate their clinical experience after completing the online coursework. The cost for the online program was $2,995 in 2009.

For Washington nurses who lack the ability to attend wound-care certification programs at the University of Washington, the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board offers an intensive online program that can not only certify nurses in wound care but also earn the student 12 graduate-level credits. Students can tailor a program based on the areas of nursing they wish to certify: wound care, ostomy or continence. In 2009, specializing in all three cost $4,950, while a single emphasis was $1,800. Students can expect 14 or more weeks of learning, including live online courses, in conjunction with 40 to 50 hours of clinical experience.
