Scholarships For Black Graduate Students

Scholarships for black graduate students can help offset rising university costs.

The rising cost of graduate school discourages many from seeking post-graduate degrees. This is especially the case for blacks who are under-represented at America's institutions of higher learning. To help students pay for graduate school, various organizations have created scholarship programs that provide money to black students and offset the burden of getting another degree.

Frederick Douglass Scholars Program

Incoming graduate students at Howard University can take advantage of the Frederick Douglass Scholars Program. This annual program is specifically for graduate students that plan to teach at the college or university level.

Selected candidates will receive about $15,000 in stipend money each year for up to 5 years, for a total of $75,000. They will also receive full tuition emission and an annual research allowance of $1,000. If they fail to maintain a 3.5 GPA, they will lose the scholarship. Recipients will be selected by the University, but interested students can contact the Office of Financial Aid to be considered for the award in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship Fund

South Florida residents can take advantage of the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Student Scholarship. The scholarship program was created in 1997 to honor Jacki Tuckfield's memory and has supported about 256 students.

For 2011, applicants must be black graduate students studying business at a Florida university. To qualify, an application form must be completed and the following should be submitted: a two-page essay, official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate school, a resume, one recommendation letter and a current photograph. Selected candidates will receive $1,000.

Earl E. Graves Scholarship

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) offers the Earl E. Graves Scholarship to black graduate students, regardless of financial need. Each year, the selected recipients receive $5,000 in scholarship money.

For 2011, applicants must be business school students, attending full time and in the top 20th percentile of their class. To complete the application form, the following documents are required: an official transcript, three letters of recommendation and a one-page essay. Selected candidates will have to provide evidence of current enrollment.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund: Graduate Fellowships

The annual Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund is available to graduate students attending certain designated universities in the United States. These institutions include, Amherst College, Swarthmore College, Vassar College, the University of Wisconsin, Wesleyan College and several others.

Black students at these designated universities must have their school submit an application for them. They must be U.S. citizens in financial need. Once selected, recipients will have their tuition paid by the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund and will also receive $18,000 stipend for living expenses, as of 2011.
