The Best Masters In Public Administration Programs

The following schools have highly ranked Master in Public Administration programs.


Public administrators determine and enact policy at the local, state and federal levels. Opportunities are available in both elected and unelected positions with the government or not-for-profit organizations. A master's degree program in public administration teaches students about public policy, political science, organizational theory and management. ''U.S. News and World Report'' ranked Syracuse University, the University of Georgia and Harvard University as having some of the top Master in Public Administration programs in the country.


Syracuse University


The Maxwell School at the University of Syracuse offers a master's degree program in public administration. This is a one-year, 40-credit graduate program that teaches students to manage and lead within the public sector. It was the first professional public management and policy program in the country. The core curriculum courses include public budgeting, public affairs colloquium, quantitative analysis, statistics, public organization and management, public administration and democracy, and executive leadership and public policy.

University of Georgia


The University of Georgia's Master of Public Administration (MPA) program works in association with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. This organization offers internship and job placement opportunities and assists students in research projects. Students must complete 41 credit hours of work in areas such as management information and research, public management, local government administration, public policy analysis and health policy and administration. Joint programs are also available with the Honors Program and the Law School.

Harvard University








The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University offers a master's degree in public administration/international development. This is a two-year program that combines policy with analytical and quantitative thinking. While the program does accept students directly from an undergraduate degree programs, most students have at least three years of work experience in the government, not-for-profit organizations or the private sector. The curriculum includes courses in theory and policy of economic development, institutions in development, governance and democratization, and theory and policy in economic development.
