Reasons For Joining A Service Sorority

There are many advantages to being a member of a service sorority.

Even though many sororities have a bad reputation for being cliquey or for performing questionable membership rituals, there are many good reasons for joining a service sorority. Service sororities, unlike social sororities, are based completely around working together for a philanthropic cause, and require more work than they do play. Many benefits go along with joining one of these organizations.

Philanthropic Efforts

One of the main reasons for joining a service sorority is the community service these groups provide. Service sororities do not focus on a social aspect and do not perform initiation traditions. Service sororities focus on providing help and service to their school and community. By participating in blood drives, Habitat for Humanity, fundraisers and various other philanthropic efforts, those in service sororities gain experience in organization, time management, planning and philanthropy.

Leadership

One of the greatest skills you'll learn by being in a service sorority is leadership. Being able to take on a role as a leader will provide experience that can help you in the professional world after college. Many of the organizations that service sororities work for may also be able to help you find a job. The leadership skills you'll acquire by volunteering are not only resume-boosters, but may prove to be impressive to a hiring manager or future boss. Taking on bigger roles in the service organization or holding an office like president or secretary will translate into skills many employers seek to find in employees.

Networking

A quality education is the most essential step to finding a job after college, but as the old saying goes, "It's not what you know, but who you know." Many new graduates find that having an "in" somewhere is the quickest way to gain employment. During college, you must make contacts through academic and social networking. Additionally, many service sororities have a large list of alumni that can offer support and mentoring for a future career.

Friendships

Whenever people spend a lot of time together, relationships are going to form. Spending time with a group of ladies that have similar interests, like those in a service sorority, may help you form friendships that last long past college graduation. Unlike many social sororities, events in service sororities tend to be more low key, which makes these sororities a good choice for those who are shy or for somebody who wants to spend time giving back to the community without dedicating her life to an organization that also has many social commitments.
