Most states require an EMT to pass the NREMT exam.
Forty-six states require emergency medical technicians to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, also known as the NREMT, exam. States that don't require the NREMT still require a similar test given by the state.
Types
The cognitive portion of the test is taken on a computer.
The NREMT exam has both a written and practical section. The written section is called the cognitive portion of the exam, and the practical is called the psychomotor portion. The cognitive portion is taken on a computer and is 80 to 150 questions, while the psychomotor portion is a hands-on test of 12 EMT skills.
Considerations
Consider taking a short EMT refresher course to revisit EMT skills that may be on the test.
To be certified, an EMT has to pass both portions of the NREMT test. The student has six attempts to pass the cognitive portion of the test and three times to pass the psychomotor portion. If it is not passed during this time, the student must complete the entire training course again. If a student has already failed the test multiple times and fears she may fail the maximum attempts, it may be advantageous to take an EMT refresher course. These courses are often only 24 hours long, much shorter than being required to complete an entire EMT training, which could last up to two years.

For example, the basic skills worksheet provides information on what criteria the student will be tested on for particular skills such as bleeding and shock control. The worksheets act as a checklist for the student to practice the skills before coming in contact with the real exam on test day.
