Spelman College is a historically black college for women that offers a variety of degree programs. According to the college, the majority of its students receive educational funding through grant and scholarship programs that base awards on financial need or merit. Spelman administers many of the programs, which are funded by private foundations and federal and state funds.
Process
Spelman's Office of Student Financial Aid administers financial aid programs. Candidates must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Administrators determine eligibility and match you with aid programs. You also may need to submit supporting documents, such as tax returns, school transcripts and birth certificates.
Grants
The majority of student aid administered by Spelman comes from federal- and state-funded programs. The Pell Grant program awards up to $5,500 as of the 2010-2011 school year. The award is based on the cost of your college, enrollment status and your family's expected financial contribution. Georgia's Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally or HOPE Scholarship awards funding to Georgia residents. Candidates must have and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Funded by the Georgia Lottery, the HOPE program pays students up to $3,500 per school year.
Private
Private foundations fund several scholarship programs. The Walmart Leadership Scholars awards money to first-generation college students. Recipients must attend leadership training programs and participate in community service activities. The UPS Community Service Scholarship, which awards up to $2,500 each semester, rewards those who have a history of community service. The scholarship requires recipients to perform community service work at Atlanta public schools. The Women in Science and Engineering Scholars program, funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation, awards funding to black women majoring in mathematics and physical science. The scholarship covers tuition, books and living expenses and requires recipients to participate in a paid summer internship.
United Negro College Fund
Spelman is a member of the UNCF, which offers scholarships for students. You typically must have a financial need to apply. Each UNCF program has its own eligibility requirements and award amounts vary. The Harlem Globetrotters Scholarship offers a maximum of $3,000 to freshmen athletes in any degree program who have at least a 2.5 GPA. The UNCF General Scholarship is worth up to $5,000 to undergraduate and graduate students who have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
