Art and design covers a broad spectrum of ideas, approaches and skills that students can learn about while in school. There are programs available in sculpture, media arts, fashion, illustration, graphic design, industrial design, architecture, art history, painting, drawing and more. Art and design colleges are typically competitive and require a portfolio of past work to be reviewed before an applicant is accepted into the school or program.
Rhode Island School of Design
The Rhode Island School of Design, often known simply as RISD, is a school that focuses entirely on art and design. RISD offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide variety of fine arts, technological arts and design disciplines. Undergraduate applicants must send in transcripts, a portfolio, three drawings specified by RISD, writing samples and test results for the SAT. Students attending RISD have many opportunities for exhibiting work in art galleries and museums on campus, as well as participating in study abroad programs.
Savannah College of Art and Design
The Savannah College of Art and Design, or SCAD, has locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia and in Hong Kong and Lacoste, France. Programs of study are available in the main areas of building arts, communication arts, design, fashion, film, digital media, performing arts and fine arts. Students are provided with a liberal arts education as well as foundation studies in art and design before choosing a specialty to focus on. Admission requirements include a portfolio of past work for both graduate and undergraduate programs.
Columbus College of Art and Design
The Columbus College of Art and Design is located in the Midwestern city of Columbus, Ohio. Majors for undergraduate students include fine arts, photography, illustration, animation, advertising and graphic design, interior design, media studies and industrial design. The program is based upon a liberal arts education with foundation studies in art, design and history. The school has residence halls where students can reside during undergraduate studies at the school. A master's of fine arts, or MFA, program is also offered for individuals who have already completed a bachelor's degree.
Parsons School of Design
Parsons, the New School for Design, is located in New York City, which offers students many opportunities for experiencing art and design shows and museums. The undergraduate degree has a grounding in a liberal arts education, which includes classes in English, history, science, humanities and mathematics. Majors are offered in many art specialties such as couture, urban design and architectural design. Graduate programs are available for interested students, and both degree types require transcripts, interviews and portfolios to gain admittance.
