It may be possible to qualify for only part of a residency.
After years of hard studying and work, every medical student anxiously awaits being placed in the National Residency Match Program. While it is every would-be doctors desire to be placed for the residency entirely, some are not so fortunate. These students receive placement only for a part of the residency, or a partial match. Though almost all students prefer being matched straight through, a handful find a partial match more compatible with the obstacles life throws at them.
Instructions
1. Apply for the Nation Residency Match Program(NRMP), using your USMLE scores and degree. Apply well in advance of the match.
2. Confirm whether you have been matched entirely, partially, or not at all on the date provided by the NRMP.
3. If you matched entirely, write to the NRMP and prove that accepting the entire residency will be a hardship or that you are dealing with a serious, complicating life situation. When you provide your password when applying, you are legally bound to accept the program that the NRMP selects. You will have to ask for a waiver to postpone acceptance. Chances of being relieved of your match are pretty slim, but the NRMP may be lenient depending on the situation.
4. Examine the Dynamic List of Unfulfilled Programs on the NRMP site if you are either unmatched or partially matched. Your chances of entering into a partial residency are greater, since the system allows you to elect programs not filled at certain hospitals. You may also choose where in the country you would like to go. You could possibly do three different years at three different locations.
