Working in an internship during your college years is a wonderful way to gain experience in your field before you go looking for your first job. An internship can sometimes be a paid position, but in many cases there is no pay for the work. At most colleges you can receive college credits for successful completion of an internship. In many cases internships lead to job offers.

1. Talk to your academic adviser at college about your desire to do as many internships as possible during your years of study. She will be able to tell you how internships are handled at your college and when it is best to participate in them.
2. Start an internship as early as it is allowable and you can fit it into your schedule. Don't wait until your senior year to start gaining internship experience. Many colleges encourage students to find their first internship during their sophomore year.
3. Sharpen your academic focus through an internship. Most fields of study are generalized with an assortment of specific jobs within the industry. Test out a few related jobs in internship positions to help you better choose which courses to take in college.
4. Find the best internship for your needs. Some colleges will provide contacts with agencies to help you locate your internship, but the effort of finding the internship is usually your responsibility. Call and visit area businesses that you think would provide a good internship experience for you.
5. Make the most of every internship experience. Learn as much as you can about the field and the job. Get a feel for the work environment and the people. Do the best you can at each internship experience and you will not only gain a wealth of knowledge but you will also get exposure and networking opportunities in the field you will be competing to enter.
