Waiting for a college to inform you of their admission decision can be one of the most difficult aspects of the entire application process. But when you receive that thick packet in the mail and open it to see the acceptance letter, you should rejoice that months and years of hard work have paid off. However, after you have accepted an invitation to attend the school of your choice, you may receive admission letters to other institutions where you applied. Send those schools a polite letter declining their offer, so their admission offices can give your slot to another applicant.
Instructions
1. Review the acceptance packet from the schools you are going to reject. Read the instructions on the manner in which the school wants you to accept or decline. Some schools request that you send your response through the postal service, while others allow you to respond through their website.
2. Begin your letter by writing your name, address and the date. Write the words "Admissions Department," or "Admissions" followed by the address. Write "Dear Admissions Department," or if you know the name of a specific admissions department representative, use that person's name in the salutation.
3. Express your appreciation for the acceptance letter you received. Write that you have carefully considered the admission offer from the institution and decided to accept an offer from another university. Thank them again for their offer and the time they took to review your application.
4. Conclude the letter with "Sincerely, " "Yours truly," or "Best wishes" and write your name. Sign your name between the closing and your written name.
