Music Teacher Scholarships

For most people, music is an important part of everyday life that lifts the spirits, stirs the emotions and in some instances enhances learning abilities in youth. Music teachers are trained not only to teach the fundamentals of creating music but also to share knowledge of the history of music and its relation to our culture and society. If you are a music teacher or a student of music education, you'll find numerous charitable foundations that offer music teacher scholarships to enhance your music curriculum.

University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Department of Music at University of Massachusetts Lowell is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The college offers grant awards to high school graduates who are entering majors in music education preparation. As of 2010, the program makes five grants available per year in the amount of $1,000 to qualified applicants. Eligibility requirements are based on several factors such as ACT and SAT scores, cumulative grade point averages and favorable high school standing. All applicants must express an interest in pursuing music education as a major and pass an audition measuring their musical potential.

Texas Music Educators Association

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) was established in 1920 and now supports a faculty of more than 10,000 music educators dedicated to the enrichment of music education in Texas schools. The TMEA offers five ongoing scholarship and grant programs to teachers who work to promote excellence in music education endeavors. The five-year undergraduate scholarship program offers up to $8,000 in scholarships per year for up to five years and is available to high school seniors pursuing careers in music education. Other scholarship programs include one-year undergraduate scholarships, one-year college division scholarships, one-year graduate study scholarships and a one-semester student teacher scholarship.

Suzuki Association of the Americas

Every spring The Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) awards "Teacher Development" scholarships to music teachers in need of instruments or musical equipment as well as tuition funding for continued music education completed in SAA-approved apprenticeships, workshops and summer institutes. The cash value of scholarship awards may vary from case to case, but scholarships in 2010 are typically valued between $300 and $800. You can apply and receive grant awards once a year for up to three consecutive years, not to exceed more than three awards within a five-year time span.

National Federation of Music Clubs

The National Federation of Music clubs (NFMC) was founded in 1967 by Hinda Honigman. To date, the NFMC has provided an outlet for more than 100,000 musicians, artists and composers to showcase their talents and gain worldwide exposure. Among the many music-related services and contributions provided to working musicians by the NFMC are two music education scholarships offered to aspiring music teachers. The Gretchen E. Van Roy Music Education Scholarship is valued at $1,150 and the Myrtle Mehan/Hazel Morgan Music Education Scholarship award is worth $475 in 2010. Both scholarships are offered to college juniors studying for degrees in music education.
