Correct Spelling Mistakes

You can correct spelling mistakes to produce prose that is comprehensible and effective. Just follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Pay attention to detail. Most spelling mistakes come from carelessness. Review what you've written. You will find your eyes landing on words that don't look quite right. This will probably correct the majority of your mistakes right off the bat.

2. Write down the misspelt word several times. Look up it's definition in the dictionary. Associate it with an image. These exercises will fix the spelling in your mind.

3. Use your ears. Sounding out a word will help to identify where you went wrong. For example, the word "acknowledgment" is one of the most commonly misspelled words in the English language. Most people forget the "d." Say the word aloud several times. You'll start to hear that "d" every time. Unfortunately, this method only works with some words. Consult a dictionary as a back-up for those tricky silent letters and vowel combinations.

4. Memorize the common rules of grammar. Knowing, for example, that "I before E except after C" can keep you from misspelling words like "receiving" or "piece." Do an Internet search for websites that offer free grammar guides, or pick up a writing guide at your bookstore.

5. List your most commonly misspelled words. Keep the list with you as you write. After a short time, you'll begin to memorize the troublesome words.

6. Spell check. You were waiting for this step, weren't you? The truth is, spell checkers are not perfect; they won't catch many homonyms and they won't help you learn. Nevertheless, spell check programs on word processing programs and email templates are easy to use. You can also download spell checks from the Internet or purchase electronic versions in book stores. Just remember--to really learn correct spelling, keep dictionary on your desk and refer to it often.
