Becoming a professional pet groomer


Learning groom pets is not just about bathing and cleaning fur, it also involves styling coats, shaving, cleaning teeth and ears, and trimming nails. You will learn use grooming equipment effectively and keep the pet calm. Pets groomed can include dogs, cats, pigs and other animals. Dogs are the most commonly groomed pet due to the wide variety of breeds and coats. Finding an accredited, professional school is a step towards earning a recognized pet grooming qualification.


New York School of Dog Grooming, USA


Established in 1960, the New York School of Dog Grooming is a professional dog grooming school, and the first to be licensed and accredited. Available programs include the 100 Hour Basic Career Course that offers training in basic skills such as bathing, drying, brushing and using equipment. The 300 Hour Advanced Career Course offers advanced skills in poodle clip variations, scissoring and shaping, and shop management. Available study days are week days or evenings and Saturday mornings. The school is closed on Sundays.


Florida Institute of Animal Arts, USA


This accredited school offers on-site courses in pet grooming. Pet grooming work stations and equipment are all provided. Programs offered include the Basic Pet Grooming Program, which is designed to help students wishing to pursue an entry level position in pet grooming. Basic skills include bathing, brushing, fluff drying, fur clipping and nail trimming. The course will also train the student in skin conditions, parasites, use and care of equipment etc. The Advanced Pet Grooming program is for students who wish to work at a professional grooming establishment at an entry level position. Students will learn everything in the Basic Pet Grooming program, and will also concentrate on perfecting grooming techniques. Advanced scissoring techniques is also included.


The Professional Pet Styling program is designed for students wishing to open their own pet grooming business. All aspects of grooming are taught.


Students are awarded a diploma upon completion of any program. Full-time or part-time study is available. Financial aid is also available for those who qualify.


JKL Training Academy, USA








This online school offers an accredited diploma or a certificate in dog or cat grooming and courses are available internationally. The diploma course is a 400 hour, 26 week course with 10 modules that cover all aspects of grooming such as coat types, scissoring techniques, coat care and styling, parasite problems, skin problems, and more. Course materials include DVD's, CD's and a training manual that can either be sent in the mail, accessed online or in CD- Rom format. Tuition costs range from $794 to $1,977 and do not include grooming tools. The certificate program in dog grooming is an 150 hour course over 12 weeks and includes six lessons, most of which focus on the care and grooming of a specific breed of dog. There is also a three lesson certificate program for cat grooming for those interested. Certificate courses are offered in the same formats as the diploma course and tuition costs are $424 for all formats, not including grooming tools.


Pretty Paws Grooming Salon and Training Centre, UK








The salon and accredited training centre was established in 1995 by professional groomer, Alison Rogers, a member of the Guild of Master Groomers. Alison teaches NVQ, BTEC 1ST, and National Diploma courses on grooming in colleges, and Pretty Paws salon also has a training center where she teaches NPTC intermediate certificate programs on dog grooming.
