Courses To Take For Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering focuses on many devices including the design and improvement of prosthetics.


Biomedical engineering uses the theory and principles of engineering to improve patient care in the medical field. The instruments, medical devices and equipment developed through biomedical engineering techniques are designed to improve diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and conditions. These devices include pacemakers, artificial limbs, dental implants, artificial organs and dialysis machines.


Bioengineering


A bioengineering course introduces students to basic and foundational concepts in the field. Students learn about biomaterials, biomechanics, biotechnology and design methodology. Additional topics include evaluation of cost, medical and practical benefits, statistical analysis, ethical issues and testing procedures. In order to take more advanced courses in the field, students learn about optical and electrical signals in biomedical devices.


Bioinstrumentation


Students enrolled in a bioinstrumentation course learn about the design and implementation of the instruments used in medical settings. The course teaches students about the processes involved in making precise medical devices that improve the health and care of patients. Topics covered in the course include feedback control systems, biosensors and photometers, microscopy, phasors and biomedical applications.








Cell and Tissue Engineering


The cell and tissue engineering course focuses on how biomedical engineering instruments and devices can affect the cells and tissues in the human body. Students learn about the role that tissue plays in cell-to-cell interactions, cell migration, cell division and cell growth. Focus is also placed on drug and nutrient affect on tissue and tissue mechanical properties.


Biological Materials, Mechanics and Processes


A biological materials, mechanics and processes course teaches students about the materials used in biomedical engineering, flow properties of blood, chemical processing operations, molecular structural principles and protein adhesives. Students also learn about the molecular design of biological materials in biomedical equipment, instruments and devices.


Digital Signal Processing


A digital signal processing course covers the techniques used in signal analysis, adaptive filtering, two-dimensional signal processing and transform algorithms. Students learn about the digital signal processing involved in the equipment and instruments used in the health care field. Emphasis is also placed on advancing the field through theories and experimentation.
