Becoming a nurse does not have to be expensive. There are a number of high quality, accredited nursing programs that are inexpensive. The best buys among cheap nursing programs are those that offers students a variety of degree options at the undergraduate level and, if possible, the graduate level as well.
Bringham Young University
As a private and nationally ranked school of nursing, Bringham Young University's (BYU) nursing program is one of the best buys in the nation. U.S. News & World Report ranked the BYU program as the 72nd highest rated program in the United States. Degrees offered at BYU are the Bachelor of Science (BSN) and the Master of Science in nursing (MSN). The BYU program is primarily geared towards students wanting to enter the field as family nurse practitioners. The cost of tuition for the BYU program as of the fall of 2009 was $4,290 per year for both resident and non-resident (out-of-state) students.

Baptist College of Health Sciences
The Baptist College of Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee, is a private Christian-based institution that specializes in undergraduate health care programs. In the field of nursing, Baptist College offers the traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing degree. The college does offer a variety of paths to the bachelor's degree, however. Classes are available through the traditional day class format, but also available as night and weekend classes as well. The college also offers a bachelor's completion program for registered nurses. At $9,730 per year (as of fall, 2009) in tuition costs, Baptist College is one of the few places to obtain a degree in nursing for under $10,000.

Alcorn State University
Alcorn State University's School of Nursing is also one of the most affordable nursing programs in the United States, especially for students already living in the state of Mississippi. Tuition costs as of the fall, 2009, semester were just $4,498 per year for resident students while non-residents students paid $11,064. Even so, this cost for out-of-state students compares favorably with other programs nationwide whose costs often exceed $15,000. Alcorn State offers an associate's degree in the field of nursing and the BSN degree at the undergraduate level. The university also offers the MSN degree with emphases in the areas of nurse education and nurse practitioner.
