Give Your Pen To A Professor

Does your favorite professor deserve a gift?

There are a variety of circumstances that may inspire you to give your pen to a professor. If there is an emergency and your professor asks for a pen, raise your hand to volunteer or directly hand the pen to the professor. If, however, you have a pen you wish to give your professor as a gift, some additional preparation and tact may be required.

Instructions

1. Volunteer in class to develop rapport with the professor. Before approaching a professor or otherwise giving your pen to one, you can spark the relationship by showing interest in material discussed in class. Visiting during office hours or study sessions can also allow you to make a connection.

2. Confirm or establish interest. Perhaps your professor directly explained or subtly suggested an affinity toward the pen you intend to give away. If not, use your relationship established by participating in class or otherwise to confirm or establish interest in the pen. You may be able to ask directly, but using the pen frequently or discussing pens in general may lead to an answer. It may also suit you better to simply work on getting to know your professor as well as possible; then, give the pen as a surprise.

3. Give the pen to your professor. As long as you are not participating in a intimate or other personal relationship with the professor that violates school or legal statutes, there is no violation or harm in giving a gift. Conservative gift wrapping and a friendly card will accompany the pen nicely on your professor's birthday or an appropriate holiday, such as Christmas or graduation.
