Learn about online and distance law programs.
Several law schools grant a variety of degrees through distance education, but most online law programs have not yet been accredited by the American Bar Association. The association recommends that students interested in taking the bar exam after completing an online or distance-learning degree contact the board of bar examiners in the appropriate state to ask whether it will approve the degree.
Taft Law School
Taft Law School separated from the William Howard Taft University in 2008 to become an independent institution. The Distance Education and Training Council approved the school for accreditation in 2003. The school offers programs in two formats. Telecommunications courses involve real-time and asynchronous electronic courses and online library resources. Students can contact fellow students and faculty members by telephone or through online message boards or mail. Independent Study courses rely less on electronic resources and allow students to structure their own study time. Students can work toward the juris doctor degree, master of laws degree or bachelor of science in laws degree.

Champlain College
Champlain College offers an online master of science in law degree. Students can specialize in four areas, including managerial law, human resources law, health law and intellectual property law. The program involves online courses and discussion boards that students can access at any time. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges has accredited Champlain College.

Concord Law School
Kaplan University established its Concord Law School in 1998. The school began offering its first online degree program that same year. The school now offers several online degree programs, including a four-year, part-time juris doctor program, a three-year, part-time executive juris doctor program and a small business practice master of laws program. Students use a secure website to view online lectures, submit assignments and connect with faculty members and fellow students. The Distance Education and Training Council has accredited the Concord Law School.
