A paralegal is a legal assistant often employed by law firms or government agencies to do research and various behind-the-scenes work to supplement a lawyer's efforts. Many universities offer 16-week courses in paralegal studies, though these courses are requirements toward a degree. It is possible to become a paralegal in 16 weeks or fewer by completing a certificate program; it is important to note, however, that most paralegal certificate programs are not accredited by the American Bar Association. 1. Apply to a paralegal training program. A high school diploma or GED is typically required. Look at the course schedule the program offers to make sure you would be able to commit if accepted. Check for programs in your area or online, whichever you prefer.
2. Sign up for courses. Some programs, such as the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh's paralegal certificate program, typically take longer than 16 weeks. If this is the case, set up your course schedule so that you are enrolled in multiple courses at one time, thereby decreasing the program's length. The number of courses you can take at one time depends on what time of day they are offered, so consult a program adviser if you have specific questions.
3. Complete all necessary requirements throughout the courses. Many programs offer hands-on training, so you may be required to travel to a particular work site such as a local courthouse or law office. Courses are typically several hours per day on a regular basis over a period of eight or 16 weeks. Courses may cover management, litigation and jurisprudence. After you have completed all requirements for your program, you will be granted a certificate and the distinction of paralegal.
