Most of us depend on dentists and oral surgeons for the health of our teeth and our mouth. On average, we visit the dentist twice a year for routine cleanings. However, some people may never have to see an oral surgeon.
Dentists
Dentists work in private practices and group offices. They treat the teeth, gums and mouth for various conditions. Dentists have the ability to fill cavities, replace missing teeth and treat tooth decay, among other tasks.
Types
Aside from general dentistry, there are other areas of dentistry that dentists can specialize in, including orthodontics and prosthodontics. Orthodontists specialize in fixing the alignment of the teeth by using braces and other appliances. Prosthodontists replace missing teeth with more permanent options than dentures.
Dentist Training
Typically eight years of college and post-graduate schooling are required to become a dentist. Undergraduate studies in the natural sciences will prepare an aspiring dentist for dental school. After undergraduate studies are completed, the student moves on to a dental school. This training is accomplished in four years. Additional years are required if the dentist wishes to specialize in another field of dentistry.
Oral Suregons
Surgeries on the mouth, jaw and surrounding areas are conducted by trained oral surgeons. Removal of the wisdom teeth is a common procedure performed by oral surgeons. Other surgeries are intended to correct problems with the jaw and bones of the face.
Oral Surgeon Training
Potential oral surgeons take the same starting path as dentists. After completion of dental school, the student is required to take a residency in surgery. This typically takes another four years to master. Oral surgeons typically spend 10 to 14 years past high school to obtain their degree.
Considerations
Although dentists can remove teeth and preform surgeries on a small scale, they are not trained as intensely as oral surgeons. Oral surgeons are trained rigorously and are capable of conducting very intricate procedures on the mouth and face.
