Occupational therapy schools require students to gain hands-on experience.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a master’s degree in occupational therapy is the minimum educational requirement for students to acquire a position in the field. There are more than 150 accredited schools nationwide that offer a Master of Occupational Therapy program, and students take courses and participate in fieldwork to earn the degree. These schools also prepare students to pass the national certification exam, which occupational therapists must take to earn their license.
Nova Southeastern University
The Master of Occupational Therapy program at Nova Southeastern University is a full-time program offered at the school’s Fort Lauderdale, Florida, campus. The program takes two-and-a-half years to complete, and students enter after earning 90 undergraduate credits. Courses include Applied Kinesiology for Occupational Therapy, Impact of Human Conditions on Occupational Performance, and Neuroanatomy. Students participate in clinical training throughout the program, and the level of clinical practice broadens as students progress through the program. The program concludes with students taking two three-month fieldwork experiences in their specialization of choice.

Ohio State University
Students in the Master of Occupational Therapy program at Ohio State University take two years of coursework followed by six months of full-time fieldwork. Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree, taken prerequisite courses, and volunteered for a total of at least 40 hours in two different occupational therapy settings. Courses include Occupational Development Throughout the Life Span, Sensorimotor Conditions in Occupational Therapy, and Occupational Therapy Assessment of Children. Students then participate in 12-week fieldwork assignments, where they gain practical, hands-on experience in occupational therapy.

University of Kansas
Students earning a master’s degree in occupational therapy at the University of Kansas complete the full-time program in three years. This combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program allows students to earn their bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy after the first year of study and then move on to graduate-level coursework. Courses include Theory and Practice in Occupational Therapy, Analysis and Adaptation of Occupations, and Neuroscience Analysis of Occupational Performance. Students participate in two full-time fieldwork experiences of three months each to complete the program.
