Summer Camps for Teens in Washington for Low-Income Campers
With the chance to make new friends, create memories around a campfire or try something new, attending summer camp can be a life-changing experience. While over 50 overnight summer camps exist in Washington state, price can be the reason attending isn't an option, but it doesn't have to be. Scattered around Washington state, many overnight camps give opportunities to families who find themselves unable to afford the high prices that some camps charge.
Camp Huston
An Episcopal camp accredited by the American Camp Association and located in Gold Bar, Washington in Wallace Falls state park, Camp Huston offers the Bishop Curtis scholarship, which will pay 1/3 of the already low cost of attendance to those who show need. Offering three sessions that last six nights each, Camp Huston's horse and buckaroo camp provides the option to stay one, two or all three weeks. With an outdoor heated pool, archery range, basketball court, arts and crafts and outdoor camping spots in the woods, Camp Huston's array of activities can appeal to all teens.
YMCA Camp Reed
Located in Deerpark, Washington, just 30 miles northwest of Spokane, Washington, Camp Reed offers financial assistance to deserving families every year. With over 300 families benefiting from assistance, Camp Reed pays a portion of the camp costs, based on financial hardship, to families that could otherwise not afford to send their children to camp. During the summer teens can expect to enjoy an array of activities such as pottery, painting, night exploring, surfing, rock climbing and hiking. Camp Reed offers up to eight weeks of camp attendance, with that option to attend as many weeks as desired.
Camp Zanika Lache
In business for over 75 years, Camp Zanika Lache is accredited by the American Camp Association and located in Wenatchee, Washington, in the Wenatchee National Forest about 2 ½ hours east of Seattle. Camp Zanika Lache offers its co-ed campers the opportunity to receive "Camperships," which assist families in paying for attendance. Parents are expected to pay what they can and request the difference by filling out an application for assistance. There is no limit for "Campership" opportunities, but applications should be turned in as soon as possible. Teens attending Camp Zanika Lache can expect to enjoy weeks filled with ropes and challenge courses, arts and crafts, backpacking, rafting and horseback riding, amongst the many other opportunities. Five overnight explorer sessions begin in early to mid July, each lasting one week, and campers have the option to attend as many as they'd like.
YMCA Camp Colman
Situated on the Case Inlet in the lower Puget Sound just outside of Seattle, Washington, Camp Colman offers parents between 10 and 25 percent off tuition costs, depending on the amount of financial need per family. In addition, Camp Colman also offers a payment plan option for parents who wish to start paying monthly prior to the start of camp. Teens attending Camp Colman can choose from eight different weeks between June and August, when they can participate in activities such as the ropes course, sailing, arts and crafts, giant swing and vertical playpen.
Sunset Lake Camp
Recognizing the difficult financial times, Sunset Lake Camp offers various one-week overnight co-ed teen camp opportunities in Wilkeson, Washington, with the option for financial assistance to those families showing need. Through the scholarship, families can receive full or partial scholarships based on evidence that shows a lack of funds. Located an hour south of Seattle, Sunset Lake Camp offers teens the opportunity to participate in many activities, such as mountain biking, drama, fishing, basketry, wakeboarding and rock climbing. In addition, Sunset Lake Camp offers teens premier camps, such as Rock Climbing Excursion and The Ultimate Road Trip. During the week, teens spend five days off-site exploring various parts of the west coast. Scholarship money can be applied to premier camps as well as to regular sessions.
