Taiwan Government Scholarships

The R.O.C. government has scholarships available for international students wishing to study in Taiwan.

The Republic of China aims to develop professionals and experts who can meet the needs of Taiwan's business and industry sectors. In an effort to promote knowledge, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and other countries, and increase academic and educational ties with foreign institutions, the Taiwanese government has a variety of scholarships available for international students wishing to study on the island.

In addition, students who want to study Mandarin Chinese can apply for the Language Enrichment Program, or LEP, scholarship in conjunction with their academic scholarships.

MOFA Scholarship

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs scholarship is available for nationals of selected countries that have diplomatic relations with the R.O.C. The scholarship is open to students wishing to enter undergraduate or graduate programs in Taiwan and includes economy-class round-trip airfare plus a monthly stipend of NT$30,000 (about U.S. $900). The lengths of scholarship awards are up to four years for undergraduate, and two and three years for master's and doctoral programs, respectively.

MOE Scholarship

The Ministry of Education scholarship is open to individuals who come from countries other than those eligible for the MOFA scholarship. Awards for this scholarship are NT$25,000/month for undergraduate and LEP participants, and NT$30,000/month for graduate students.

NSC Scholarship

The National Science Council scholarship is available to citizens from countries other than those specified under the MOFA scholarship's eligible countries. This scholarship is available for graduate studies only, with a monthly stipend of NT$30,000.

HES Scholarship

The Hanyu Enrichment Scholarship applies to the Language Enrichment Program, aimed directly at students wishing to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan. This scholarship is awarded by R.O.C. overseas offices and embassies and may be granted for lengths of study including three, six or nine months or for a full year. Students who apply for the HES are also eligible to apply for the other government scholarships for academic programs.

Other Scholarships

The Taiwan government offers support to other organizations who provide scholarships. For information about scholarships from the Taiwan chapter of Academia Sinica and MediaTek corporation, contact them directly. (See Resources 3, 4.)
