Even the best sorority has its down sides.
A sorority can be an effective way to introduce you into college life and make lifelong friends, but it's not all beneficial. A sorority is a highly social organization that will demand your time and resources. Ensure you can balance education and social responsibilities before you commit yourself to any sisterhood.
Schedule Conflicts
The reason you go to college is to learn a specialized trade you can use in the business world. This requires a lot of time and research to ensure you get the proper grades. Living in a sorority and participating in its events can conflict with your busy study schedule, though. Almost every student will have a different class schedule as well, so some students may miss important courses to participate in sorority events.
Cost
Becoming a member of a sorority is not free. You have the cost of lodging, membership fees and event donations. There is also the pressure to participate in the activities of the sorority sisters. For example, if your sisters are all heading out to dinner and the movies, you may feel compelled to join when you really can't afford it. You can still feel pressured to spend even if no one coerces you.
Conflict
Living in close quarters with many people is bound to cause some friction. The same thing can happen in a dorm room that you share with a roommate, but you have a greater number of people in a sorority with whom to start a conflict. If you get on one girl's bad side, you may feel disapproval from your other sorority sisters. Even if the conflict is no fault of your own, you can still feel the sting and frustration when one of your sisters takes issue with your behavior.
Temptation
Moving out and living on your own with a group of friends for the first time is intoxicating. You get the chance to live life the way you desire without the constant presence of parents. Unfortunately, this also opens up a world of temptation. While living in your sorority house, you will meet new people that may have less savory interests than you do. If you don't stay firm and show self-control, you may end up participating in activities like gratuitous drug use and excessive drinking.
