What SAT Subject Test will your college require?
High school students across the nation with plans to attend institutions of higher learning must inevitably take standardized tests. At a minimum, the SAT I test is accepted for consideration by colleges and universities. However, some schools require SAT Subject Tests, also known as SAT II (2), to be submitted with first-year applications. SAT Subject Tests assess students' knowledge of specific subject areas such as math, science and history.
University of Notre Dame
Students looking to enroll in the University of Notre Dame's undergraduate class compete for just over 1,600 spots. Each year, the school receives approximately 15,000 applications.
Generally, Notre Dame accepts SAT 2 tests if scores enhance a student's application and subject tests are used to place students in degree programs prior to enrollment. However, if you are a home schooled student, SAT Subject Tests are required. Home school graduates must take standardized exams in history, foreign language and science. Applicants can choose the subject matter within the three categories.
Amherst College
Located in Amherst Massachusetts, Amherst College is a liberal arts school, enrolling 1,700 students each year. In 2010, just over 8,000 students applied to the undergraduate program and 1,240 were accepted (490 enrolled).
First-year applicants who plan to submit SAT scores for consideration with their application must also submit two SAT Subject Tests. Testing must be completed by the deadline under which you apply.
Barnard College
Affiliated with Columbia University, also located in New York City, Barnard College is a liberal arts school for young women founded in 1889. Barnard's student population of 2,300 students has more than 50 majors to choose from and enjoy a student to instructor ratio of seven to one.
Admission into Barnard College is completed through the common application and students planning to submit SAT tests must also take two SAT Subject Tests to complete their application. Applicants can choose which subject tests to take. Subject Tests are not required for international transfer students.
Harvard College
Harvard College, Harvard University's undergraduate school, had a record year of enrollment for its class of 2014, with more than 30,000 applicants competing for only 2,000 freshman spots, according to the "Harvard Gazette."
In addition to submitting SAT scores with an application, students are required to submit two SAT Subject Tests of their own choosing with an application. As applications are due on the first of December each year, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete tests prior to December so consideration of their application is not delayed.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is known for education excellence in science and technology. MIT typically enrolls 1,000 to 2,000 students into its first-year programs. In 2010, 16,632 candidates submitted final applications for the freshman class, and 1,676 were accepted.
Admission in to the college requires students to submit SAT Subject Test scores in math and science. Students have the option of choosing Math I or Math II as the math subject test and physics, chemistry or biology for science subject tests.
