American Architectural Foundation Art Scholarships

Architectural design

The American Architecture Foundation was originally founded in 1943 as the American Institute of Architects Foundation, with a design to bring an awareness to how architecture has the ability to transform communities and lives. The foundation, a national nonprofit educational organization based at the Octagon Museum in Washington, D.C., has been educating architects and community leaders ever since. According to Archfoundation.org, the foundation offers numerous outreach programs and grants, but currently only one scholarship--The Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship. Other programs include The Mayors' Institute on City Design, Great Schools by Design and the Sustainable Cities Design Academy.

The Fellowship

The Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship is sponsored by the Arch Foundation and The French Heritage Society and is designed to incorporate an exchange program of architects who are working on a career in historical preservation. The program sends young American and French architects to the opposite country to study the techniques currently being implemented to preserve architecture.

Motivation

The Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship is supported by the LaFarge Corporation and was implemented in 1990. According to Archfoundation.org, The Arch Foundation wanted to encourage and support young architects with a commitment to architectural heritage and those that receive the reward represent the best the United States and France have bred and educated in architectural preservation.

Details

The fellowship is named after Richard Morris Hunt, a 19th century architect and the first American to study at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. It provides the receiving architect with six months study in the appropriate country and comes with a $25,000 stipend. Each year, the award is alternated between an American and a French architect.
