With hundreds of interior design schools, it is difficult to know where to start when applying. From art and design specialty schools to fully accredited universities, many interior design programs exist for you to consider. Financial and geographical considerations can narrow your list, as can the reputation of each school's program.
East Coast
New York City is home to Fashion Institute of Technology, part of the State University of New York system. The interior design program is the largest in the city and features an emphasis on sustainability, health and safety. Also in the Big Apple, New York Institute of Technology offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Virginia College in Mobile, Alabama, offers associate and bachelor's degrees. The Center for Professional Development at the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Massachusetts, offers a bachelor's degree in residential interior decorating. Hesser College, with campuses in Manchester, Nashua, Portsmouth and Salem, New Hampshire, offers an associate degree.
Midwest
Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo offers a 4-year degree in interior design. Harrington College of Design in Chicago features a diploma program and associate and bachelor's degrees. Students can also obtain a kitchen-and-bath-design specialization certificate. The Art Institutes International in Minneapolis offers associate and bachelor's degrees. Brown College in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, features a bachelor's program.
West Coast
Collins College in Tempe, Arizona, has a bachelor's program. The University of California Los Angeles offers a certificate and degree program. The Interior Designers Institute in Orange County, California, features small class sizes and issues a Bachelor of Science and an associate degree. Brooks College in Long Beach, California, offers an associate degree. Maric College in Sacramento, California, features diploma programs in kitchen and bath as well as general interior design.
Nationwide Schools
The Art Institute, with campuses throughout America, offers a bachelor's degree at its Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and San Diego and Orange County, California, campuses. Sacramento, California; Seattle, Washington; Las Vegas, Nevada; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; and Tampa and Orlando, Florida, have International Academy of Design and Technology campuses with bachelor's programs. Westwood College, with four locations in southern California, two in Colorado, three in Illinois, two in Virginia and one in Georgia, issues bachelor's degrees. American InterContinental University offers a bachelor's program at its Weston, Florida, and Los Angeles, California, campuses.
Online
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh has an online division that offers a bachelor's degree in interior design. In addition to its nationwide campuses, Westwood College also offers an online program.
