Conic Section Art Projects

The Golden Gate Bridge features conic sections.

A conic section is a geometrical term that describes the intersection of a plane and a cone. The general equation for a conic section is Ax2 + Bxy + Cy2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0.

Islamic Art

Islamic artists have used the conic section as a basis for much of their abstract art and decoration. The arabesque, for instance, can be found on buildings, fabric and pottery and is characterized by intertwining plants and abstract curvilinear motifs.

Simple School Project

Make a drawing that uses at least 10 diagonals, 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines on graph paper. Find the equation by choosing two points of the lines and finding the slope of the lines. Using the point slope formula, write the equation of the line in both standard form and in slope-intercept form, and state the domain and the range of each line segment used. Once this has been completed, add colors and create an artistic version of the lines that you've drawn.

Golden Gate Bridge Project

Use the Golden Gate bridge as a starting point to look at hyperbolas and parabolas in architectural design. Use the design as a base for an art piece that incorporates those kind of curves. This could be on any kind of material, canvas, cloth, ceramics or even jewelry.
