Despite the increased demand for nurses, nursing school has become increasingly more competitive to enter. Currently, there are more applicants than faculty to teach courses. Applying to nursing school does not guarantee entry. In addition, there are several pathways to becoming a registered nurse (RN). Prerequisites for entering nursing school vary, based on a number of factors such as the pathway chosen to become a registered nurse, and individual school requirements.
High School Diploma
High school diplomas necessary for higher learning.
Completing high school and receiving a diploma is essential before pursuing higher learning at a college or university.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
Typically, a minimum GPA of 2.0 is necessary to be considered for entry into most nursing schools. The higher the GPA, the better your chances are of securing a spot. Requirements vary between individual schools.
Prerequisite Courses
Classes in anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and microbiology are mandatory at virtually every nursing school prior to application. Others may request a sociology and an entry-level college English course. Check with the school's admission counselor for specific class requirements.
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification
Take BLS before applying to school.
Most schools require that you have the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) CPR certification prior to entering nursing school. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association offer BLS classes.
Medical Exam and Immunizations
Head to the doctor before you become a nurse.
A health care provider will need to perform a physical exam to ensure that you do not present a health concern to yourself and patients. Immunizations must be up to date and submitted to the school.
Additional School Requirements
Check with the school's admission counselor about application deadlines, recommendations, and any additional entry exams. Schools may also request that you have volunteer experience working with patients before applying to school. Last but not least, background checks are typically performed. Be upfront about any criminal or civil offenses. Fill out all requested materials completely as forgetting to do so may cost you a spot.
